Airstream RV Blog #76 - Wal-Mart Camping from Sean Michael on TheLongLongHoneymoon.com.

Q: How many times have you camped in a Wal-Mart parking lot?
A: I’m not sure exactly. Maybe a dozen.

Q: Is it safe?
A: Yes, as far as I can tell. I’ve never felt threatened in a Wal-Mart parking lot. At times, I’ve even seen private security making their rounds, and thus felt an extra layer of protection. Most Wal-Marts have security cameras running at all times.

Blowing All Your Money in Canada

July 8, 2008 by Sean Michael · 17 Comments

Last week we discussed beating gas prices by camping close to home. So it seems fitting that in this week’s post we consider what happens when you throw caution to the wind, viciously abuse a few credit cards, and camp FAR AWAY from home. For my wife Kristy and I, the time we spent in Canada’s stunning Banff National Park qualifies. Here are a few thoughts about camping in Canada, with some pesky dollar amounts attached.

Have high gas prices got you down? Have you been pondering whether to even take an RV trip this summer? Have you considered making your daily commute in an electric golf cart? Fear not, my friends. You can have your RV, and camp in it too.

Of course, the secret is simple. If you want to beat these skyrocketing gas prices, you simply need to…

Camping on the Beach!

June 24, 2008 by Sean Michael · 3 Comments

One of the most delightful aspects of RV ownership has been discovering the variety of environments in which we can camp.

When we first started shopping for our travel trailer, Kristy and I were motivated by the prospect of college football tailgating. In the Deep South, tailgating has been raised to a high art form; the well-equipped RV is its ultimate creative expression. Little did we realize that so many purposes other than tailgating would emerge. Ironically, although we’ve done an outrageous amount of camping, we have yet to take our Airstream to a football game! But after more than a year of ownership, we’ve taken our RV just about everywhere else.

We’ve camped in friends’ driveways and in Wal-Mart parking lots. We’ve camped in national, state, and city parks. We’ve camped in public and private campgrounds. We’ve camped in the mountains, we’ve camped alongside majestic canyons, and yes, as today’s video demonstrates – we’ve camped on the beach.

When Mountain Goats Attack

Airstream RV Blog - The Goat Incident from Sean Michael on Vimeo.

Most people who own RVs also enjoy getting outside to sample the natural pleasures of our bountiful planet. I’m not talking about the pleasures of ice cream, barbecue, and cold pale ale. I’m talking about activities like kayaking, surfing, biking, and hiking. These endeavors go hand-and-hand with camping.

Personally, I enjoy a nice hike – especially on sunny, low humidity days in the great American Rocky Mountains. There’s no better way to clear one’s head while stretching one’s legs. Of course, rocky mountain goats also enjoy hiking. In fact, although they are rarely seen surfing, goats hike on a daily basis. This brings us to today’s video, one of my favorite episodes of our long, long honeymoon. This video contains … the unexpected.

We shot this footage along a jaw-dropping hike through the upper stratosphere of Montana’s Glacier National Park. I’ve said before that if this incident had involved a bear, my memories of it may not be so fond. But it doesn’t involve a mama grizz; it stars a mountain goat. You can’t really plan this sort of thing. Life just happens, and here it unfolds on camera.
