Lizard feet – is that you?
April 18, 2010 by Jaimie Hall Bruzenak · 4 Comments
The RV Daily Report had an intriguing article: “Avoid lizard feet- they’re a common problem for RVers.” Lizard feet? According to Judy Jackson of the Edmonton Journal, her feet were like leather on the bottom from going barefoot and wearing flip flops so much of the time. This can cause your feet to get dry, cracked with possibly bleeding, calluses, and blisters from getting dusty, dirty and dry, getting wet, drying, getting wet again, and losing natural moisturizing oils. How about you? Do you have “lizard feet?” Many RVers take off their shoes when they enter their RV to keep it cleaner. For a short trip to the pool, office or laundromat, sandals, flip flops or clogs are certainly easier. Though I rarely wore shoes as a kid growing up, now I don’t do too well on dirt and rocks. My feet, though, probably tend towards lizard. So what’s a gal to do? (or a guy?) According to the article – moisturize. Choose a foot cream or lotion that has a high percentage of urea. Other oils are good too. Putting a lotion or oil on before bedtime and then wearing white cotton socks at night will help your feet absorb the oil and keep them soft. After soaking her feet for an hour and one-half, the pedicurist then got out the razor. Oh my! For the rest of the gruesome story, see the article at the Edmonton Journal. I think I’ll keep my lizard feet, though perhaps soak them once in a while. How about you?! Jaimie Hall Bruzenak Read More →

RV Cooking Show Goes Greek (Salad) in Tarpon Springs, FL
April 8, 2010 by Evanne Schmarder · Leave a Comment
I absolutely love it when I stumble upon a hidden-gem RV destination…and that’s just what happened to me in Tarpon Springs, FL. Sure, I’d heard about the little Greek town slightly north of Clearwater Beach but it turned out to be so much more than I expected. Of course there’s the sponge docks worthy of an afternoon stroll but there’s also a historic district, great shopping, interesting neighborhoods, and even a couple great beaches. The Greek ‘flavor’ of Tarpon Springs isn’t just for show, either. Explore this small town with us then get ready for a modern twist on a Greek classic…we’re making a Chopped Greek Salad that would make any Tarpon Springs restaurant owner proud. It is not only easy but it’s delicious. And bonus…you’ll also learn how to make a tasty vinaigrette from scratch. Try it and I bet you’ll never go back to bottled! Natural beauty, fresh air, inspiration, culture, good friends, good times, and healthy, local, delicious meals…that’s what RVing and camping is all about. It’s time…see you on the road! RV tip: How to start a conversation
March 27, 2010 by Jaimie Hall Bruzenak · 11 Comments
It’s simple. Carry a butterfly net! We were hiking Pima Canyon in the Catalina Mountains in Tucson, Arizona. We had gone on a weekday as reviews had advised. Trail head parking was minimal with no street parking allowed and the parking lot at 10 a.m. was close to full. We started up the trail- like a cattle chute- a narrow strip fenced on either side to take you through private property that borders the beginning of the trail. Shortly, though, we got into the Pusch Ridge Wilderness in the Coronado Forest. If you don’t look behind you, civilization drops away. Read more Read More →
Is there an “ideal” DP?
March 9, 2010 by Larry Cad · 15 Comments
Well, we got several good comments about our first installment on this subject, so let’s push forward with more of our observations in our ongoing attempt to find the ideal diesel pusher motorhome. So, where are we so far in our project to design our ideal DP? Well, we want a fairly large, midship LCD TV that you can watch with the slides in, and no full wall slide. So far, so good. Now, here is another item that we want, and that makes me wonder when looking at motorhomes on display at various RV shows. Our motorhome has solid surface countertops and we really like it. Our stove top is also covered by the same material. However, our stove top is also hinged. In other words, when you want to use the stove we simply raise the top, fold it to the back of the stove and it resides there until we are finished and the stove has cooled, then we fold the top back into place. On virtually all new motorhomes, the same stove top is supplied as two loose pieces laying on the stove top. If you want to use the stove, you lift the pieces off, and then stand in the middle of the kitchen, looking foolish while you decide if you want to put the pieces in the bedroom on the bed, or, better yet, put them in the basement for permanent storage. Cost of two hinges: $2.50. Go figure that one. My next subject is not really within my area of expertise and I defer to my lovely wife and partner, Linda, to inspect and pass judgement. That is the area of storage within the living... Read more

Is there an “ideal” DP?
March 4, 2010 by Larry Cad · 18 Comments
For this post, I hope you will all indulge me as I depart from my perspective as an impartial observer, and offer some opinions. Linda and I have, for several years, RV’ed in a 40 ft. diesel pusher. Our personal opinion is that this is a wonderful way to travel and to camp. Our coach has every amenity we could ask for and we are very comfortable living in it for long periods of time. Having said that, we also believe there is room for improvement. With that in mind, we set out at the RVIA show last year in December, to find the perfect DP. As we looked around, we noted features we would like to have and wondered why some things were done. These observations varied from, “hmmm, wonder why that is like that”, to “WHY would anyone even think of doing that!!”, and everything in between. Some of these observations are based on our personal experience, and others derive from comments made by fellow campers. Here is what we came up with, not in any particular order. First, it is nice to see that most motorhome manufacturers are finally beginning to realize that LCD type televisions are made for motorhomes. These TVs are lighter in weight, take up less space, use less energy, and offer great pictures. What amazes me is that it has take until the 2010 model year to accomplish this realization. However, it has happened. Actually, the advantages of LCD TVs is so great, it should be an automatic decision for RVers to convert their older coaches over... Read more
RV Cooking Show – Three Crepes and a Castle…a love story
February 12, 2010 by Evanne Schmarder · 3 Comments
Hello RV Cooking Show “lovers”, When you were a kid did you dream of being a famous movie star or sports figure, invited to exclusive parties to mingle amongst the elite? Visit the Hearst Castle estate and, with some imagination, you might get a taste of what it was like to be part of that crowd. There are several tours available including their newest – a self-guided Gardens and Vistas tour – complete with guides standing by to answer your questions about Hearst and “The Enchanted Hill”. Interestingly, rather than a rote tour talk, each guide is permitted to develop their own spiel focusing on their interest in the Castle and it’s art, people, grounds, history, and more. Well, at least for now, allow me to be your personal Hearst Castle tour guide in this episode of the RV Cooking Show – Three Crepes and a Castle…a love story. Do I love the Castle or the crepes?? You can probably guess…yeah, both :> Using ingredients that you most likely already have at home, you, too, can make amazing crepes. It’s not difficult at all…just technique. Serve these to your Valentine’s Day sweetie (or enjoy each other’s company making them together in your RV kitchen) or wow your dinner/dessert guests. So let it snow…we’re warm and well fed inside. “Luv” to you on this long, romantic weekend…please be mine, Evanne Read More →
RV Cooking Show – Grilled Cuban Sandwiches, Cuban Cowboy Caviar & Cortez, FL

If you ask me, there’s nothing better than a warm weather getaway by the beach. Bonus points if it’s a stay in a thriving town with a terrific RV resort, lively dining and entertainment in walking distance, and fresh fish right off the boat. Well, that’s just what I stumbled upon when I pulled into Cortez, Florida. This little town is tucked away on the land side of Anna Maria Island and is often eclipsed by its big neighbor to the south – Sarasota. But don’t be fooled, you could easily while away many memorable days and nights in this West Coast of Florida paradise. In our latest RV Cooking Show –Grilled Cuban Pressed Sandwiches, Cuban Cowboy Caviar & Quirky Cortez Florida – we’ll show you around town and, with a special guest, make a mighty tasty meal. I’m especially excited to bring you Paulette’s Cuban version of an old RV-standby – Cowboy Caviar. Take a look – you’re gonna love it.
