Pet Travel Challenges

July 14, 2008 by Tom James · 4 Comments

All of us like to travel with our pets when we can. It’s no fun for them (or us) when we have to leave them behind — even for a short time. Although traveling with pets has gotten easier and more fun with all of the pet travel products available on the market, we still encounter various challenges as we trek across town or across country. RVing with pets and their unique needs

July 7, 2008 by Tom James · 8 Comments

HedgehogI would bet that most people who travel with pets have a canine along with them in the RV, car or plane. But there are a lot of folks who travel with their cats, birds and other pets as they head out for business or pleasure. The type of pet you travel with can have unique requirements for feeding, comfort, safety and other considerations. Birds, for example, have much more stringent travel needs than dogs. Some people would argue that cats are more difficult to travel with than dogs. Read more

In Memory of Old Fella

July 3, 2008 by RV.net Blog Admin · 8 Comments

Sadly, Old Fella, the dog that moved many RVers to new levels of compassion, passed away on Saturday June 28, 2008 at 11:42 DST due to complications from bone cancer.

Many RVers came to know Old Fella from the RV.net forum, and will remember how this formerly skinny black stray, missing part of his back paw and most of his teeth, was rescued by Richard and Sue Daniels of Waynesboro, Georgia on September 5th, 2005.

Old Fella’s rescue story inspired animal lovers across the United States and even prompted Burke County’s first animal rescue organization. And many RV.net members joined in supporting the Daniels’ family as the unexpected vet bills began to mount.

Petiquette: Good campers make good neighbors

June 30, 2008 by Tom James · 7 Comments

No poo poo, please. One of the best things about the Internet is the sharing of information. Remember the days when you had to hop in the car and drive to the local library to find out something about anything? Now, in the comfort of one’s home (or in your RV if you’re connected), you can let your fingers search for information on just about any topic you can think of and, presto, it’s served right to your computer screen in a matter of seconds. Talk about technological advancement!

This phenomenon presented itself to me recently when I wanted to find out about pet-friendly campgrounds. I stumbled across the RVing with Dogs website and thought it might be something worth a look to others who may have difficulty finding pet-friendly RV parks. Check out some dog-friendly campsites across the country that you may want to consider visiting in your RV. Search for the state in which you plan to visit and see the listings of the various campsites that are pet-friendly. You can find out more details about the property and even read comments by people who have stayed there. There are not a ton of listings, but it may be helpful to hear what others have to say. By the way, I have no affiliation with this site. As I said earlier, one of the best things about the Internet is the sharing of information.

RVing with pets: Making the most of it

June 16, 2008 by Tom James · 2 Comments

RVing with pets

Although gas prices still appear to be heading north, record numbers of people will take to the road with their pets this year as more and more pet-friendly hotels, resorts and other accommodations roll out the welcome mat. Recreational activities like camping and hiking will involve four-legged members of family like never before, and more campgrounds and RV parks are beginning to design pet areas that offer dog runs and opportunities for off-leash exercise. Some even offer pet-sitting services so families can enjoy day trips and sightseeing excursions that may not allow pets.

Safe and enjoyable RV pet travel means planning ahead

Just as you would pack your own things, don’t overlook what your pet may need to keep him comfortable, too. Being prepared with the right essentials and equipment is the key to ensure a happy time on the road and once you get to your destination. Also keep in mind when and where you plan to travel. The time of year and geographical location of your trek can make a big difference in how and what you prepare to take along. Know what the weather conditions are likely to be and pack accordingly.

5 people and 2 dogs in a 35 ft motorhome

front room

When we began our camping adventures 2 years ago, we thought a 5th wheel was the way to go.  We had a truck already to tow with and the 5th wheel had so much living space when all 4 slides were out and we were all set up.  3 short camping trips later, we came to the realization that we needed more space while traveling if we were going to make this work.

The Rally Featured in USA Today

March 21, 2008 by RV.net Blog Admin · Leave a Comment

The RV world gets national attention as The Rally in Perry, GA and the RV lifestyle are featured on the front page of USA Today’s Travel section.  Check out a great video featuring the dog show, another video comparing a nice class A motorhome to a practical pop up camper and an interesting article of the RV lifestyle for those that haven’t savored the joy of it, yet…

Although it brings up the fuel controversy, it’s worth reading.

Your Story: The Right Way to Write? Part 1

February 5, 2008 by Dan Parlow · 2 Comments

Well you may not be Shakespeare, but you have a writing style all you own. Those who choose to write about their travels can find it very rewarding. Whether it is a personal diary of memories for you to cherish or a vivid account of your adventures to share with others, keeping a journal can be very satisfying.

From my experience, looking over large numbers of Trip Journals, everyone has their own voice and there can be vast differences in writing styles. Some choose to write in more of a narrative style, while others are descriptive, some will write in the first person, while others will choose to write in the point of view of their dog. There really is no right or wrong way to record your memories (although some pesky folks will always try to correct your grammar and/or spelling).

Different Approaches

I would like to share a few different Trip Journals with you that I think have unique or interesting writing styles. This week I thought I would share two journals of a narrative style that are written from the perspective of something other than the author. One is that of The Rogue Roamers (or Bill and Pixie) who write their journal from the point of view of their cat, Pita, pictured below. Check out Pita’s Trip Journal!

Pita -Narrative Cat
Pita, the Narrative Cat

Another is the journal of Kent and Fran who write about the adventures of Chummy, their 1982 Airstream trailer. You can check out Chummy’s trip here. These two examples are just two of the great journals found on MyTripJournal.com; we have many other journals written from fun and unusual points of view.

How to be the “Best”

Many people ask how to be shown in the “Best of MyTripJournal”, seen at MyTripJournal.com/explore and on our partner sites like Good Sam Club and Woodalls. There we hand-select what we consider to be journals that go above and beyond, and will be a valuable read to other travelers. We typically tend to select journals that have more focus on the particular destination a traveler is visiting rather than those that are a more narrative account of their travels without specific details about the location.

This is not to say that journals that cover the daily details of your life are not fabulous and will not be a great memento of your travels. I feel that you should write in which ever style you decide suits you best and forget any critics.

Next week I will discuss more about different writing styles and techniques used in people’s travel accounts…
