RV Doctor – My Dinghy Tow Wiring Is Causing Me Confusion
September 24, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 5 Comments
Dear RV Doctor, My motorhome is towing a Ford Escort and I am having a problem with my tow wiring. When I have my lights on and then turn on a turn signal, I notice a really faint blinking from the turn signal that is not supposed to be blinking. I’m really confused by this. Any ideas? - Craig Burkholder, (Lititz, PA) Read more Read More →
RV Doctor – I’m Having Issues With Main Fuse In My RV
September 22, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 5 Comments
Dear Gary, While closing my slides I found the main (30A) fuse blown. I returned home and replaced the fuse and set up the coach and plugged into my AC electrical source and opened up both of them. We had some bad weather coming through our area so I went out to close the slides and the main fuse was blown again! I replaced the fuse after opening the slides and it was okay. My book doesn’t show an electrical diagram for the circuits and I am lost. Neither time could I smell any type of smell indicating bad wiring. - Randy Serice, (Lake Charles, LA) Read more Read More →
RV Doctor – How Do I Install a New Toilet in My RV?
September 18, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 3 Comments
Dear RV Doc, How would I install a new toilet in my RV? I’d like to go to a bigger one. Is the RV toilet the same as a toilet in a home with the two bolts and the wax ring? Or is it an entirely different hook up? - Armin Meyer, (Tacoma, WA) Read more Read More →

September 16, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 7 Comments
Dear RV Doctor, We saw the RV Roadtrips show on DIY and wondered if you’d share some buying tips. I am interested in buying an older motorhome; a 1985 model. I am a novice working on mechanical projects, but want to learn. What are the most important things I need to be looking for before buying?- Gordon Griffin, (Blooming Grove, TX) Read more Read More →
RV Doctor – Question About RV Propane Tank Leakage
August 27, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 6 Comments
Dear Gary, I had my propane tank filled last a couple of months ago while leaving a campground. Two weeks later I went on another campout and noticed my propane level at a quarter tank on the inside gauge. I checked the tank gauge and had the same reading. I don’t smell a leak nor did the alarm go off so I was wondering if I got ripped off for a fill up or what else could have happened. All other propane appliances work fine. - Jerome Townsend, (Rockford, IL) Read more Read More →
RV Doctor – RV Heating Flame Keeps Going Out
August 25, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 2 Comments
Dear RV Doc, We own a 1999 Safari with the Hydro Hot heating system. The system will run for a while then the fire will go out causing a flame-out warning light on the panel to light. Sometimes it will go on and off like it’s getting air in the line. I’ve bled the line as per the manual but continue to have this problem. This makes for some cold mornings as the thermostat continues to run the zone fans without any heat coming from the radiators. Any ideas? - Greg Peterson, (Bremerton, WA) Read more Read More →
RV Doctor – Can Water-Pump Bypass Valves Go Bad?
August 21, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 6 Comments
Dear RV Doc, I own a 36-foot motorhome. The day before we left on our last trip, the temperature here dipped to about 16-degrees so I kept the heater on in the coach and placed a small space heater in the bay where all the water lines are. The morning we left all was fine. I didn’t see any sign of freezing so away we went. We stopped about six hours into the trip where I noticed ice forming underneath the bay where the water lines are, (I have no way of heating down there while traveling). Also we had no water pressure inside the coach. When we stopped about three hours later the water pressure had returned and everything looked thawed. Upon our arrival at our destination, I did a more detailed inspection and found that the strainer basket part of the water pump had separated slightly from the water pump which caused a small leak. There was no damage to it so I simply reinstalled the part and there were no more leaks. The rest of the trip was uneventful. When we returned I began to re-winterize the RV using a non-toxic RV antifreeze by disconnecting the supply line from the pump and using a tube in the bottle of anti-freeze. I allow the pump to pull the antifreeze into the water lines of the coach, then I turn on each faucet until the pink stuff comes out. Before any of that, of course, the first thing I do is after draining the water from the system and water heater is put the water heater in the by-pass mode. After putting it in the by-pass mode I noticed that the pump... RV Doctor – Is It Safe To Run the Furnance Off the Generator While Traveling?
August 6, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 11 Comments
Dear RV Doc, I have heard of running the roof air conditioner off the generator while traveling. Is it safe to run the furnace off the generator while traveling? We travel to Florida every March and sometimes the first morning is quite cold, even after preheating the coach for several hours before leaving. The dash heater could not keep up with the heat loss while traveling. Riding in an over-sized icebox isn’t much fun. - Bill Lemke, (South Wales, NY) Read more Read More →
RV Doctor – Should I Install an Inverter in My RV?
August 3, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 9 Comments
Dear Gary, I watched one of your television shows where the family of a hybrid trailer needed a stronger battery. You replaced their 12-volt battery with two 6-volt batteries. I have a 26-foot RV and it has only one 12-volt battery. Would it be better for me to use two 6-volts? Would I get more amps with two12-volt batteries instead? I also have a converter but no inverter in my trailer. If I pull into a campground or parking lot where I need to run off battery, the lights work but the outlets do not. How would I install an inverter into my trailer and how hard would it be? - John Okragleski, (no city/state) Read more Read More →
RV Doctor – How Do I Fix the Shakiness of My 5th-Wheel?
July 23, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 6 Comments
Dear RV Doctor, My wife and I have been RVing for about 5 years but we used a tent for 25 years before that. We started with a bumper pull and loved it. We had no problems with getting it very stable. Last year we decided to upgrade to a fifth wheel, which is when our problems started. We cannot seem to get it stable. No matter what I do, we still have a shaky RV. I do have a tripod for the front and I have put an extra jack in the area of the steps, but nothing seems to help. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for any help you might have. - Ron Hooten, (Kempner, TX) Read more Read More →
