A GPS Designed For RVers
May 11, 2011 by Rex Vogel · 25 Comments
After extensive research and beta testing in the RVing community, Rand McNally has released the TripMaker® RVND™ 5510 sporting a name that’s almost as long as my motorhome. It’s the first navigation device designed specifically for RVers. Rand McNally's GPS for RVers (Credit: Rand McNally) It comes stocked with information that would make a car driver’s head spin. Routing isn’t just routing on the 5510. The GPS also includes height and weight restrictions and turning preferences that are tuned to the type of RV you’re driving. For example, you might not enjoy maneuvering your 43-foot-long motor home around a tight right corner into the Cracker Barrel parking lot. The 5510 will show you a left turn into your destination. There’s also the question of where to park your house-on-wheels. The points of interest on this GPS are expanded to include RV campgrounds, dealers, repair providers, and travel centers with dump stations. “We’ve listened carefully to members of the RVing community, who told us overwhelmingly that they would be interested in purchasing a GPS if it provided RV-specific routing, stops, and amenities that RVers need while on the road, and things to see and do along the way. Our new TripMaker® RVND™ line will solidly deliver on these expectations,” said Dave Muscatel, CEO of Rand McNally in a new release. RV-critical Information Fully operational in English, French, and Spanish, the TripMaker® RVND™ features more... Read more

Finally, a Pay-as-you-go satellite TV offer made for RVers!
March 22, 2011 by RV.net Blog Admin · 27 Comments
By Marcel Guajardo, DISH Network RV Products Manager During the last year, I traveled to several rallies and trade shows across the country. I started at the Winnebago Rally in Forest City, Iowa, speaking to RVers about their satellite TV experiences. It was obvious that RVers love their TVs, but many travel only a few months a year and don’t want a year-long commitment. So we launched our new “Pay-as-you-go” program that lets you simply pay for TV service for only the months you travel. RVers can sign up for a no-contract plan in which you only pay a monthly bill for the months that you travel. This presents huge savings for RVers since you don’t have to pay a monthly bill all year long. You can start and stop monthly service as many times as you want at no charge. The program offers HD programming and the convenience of having a dedicated receiver in your RV. There’s no better offer for those who want to enjoy television while they travel! Key features of our Pay-as-you-go program: No contract required No additional monthly service fees No charges to start or stop monthly service HD programming Compact HD receiver View your off-air channels through your HD receiver Have a Ku-band mobile satellite antenna? Want HD in-motion? Only DISH Network offers HD programming with any Ku-band mobile satellite antenna! To learn more, visit www.dish.com/rv. We are also in all Camping World stores! Read More →

What’s a Wallup?
March 15, 2011 by Rex Vogel · 19 Comments
The Wallup! ™ or “Wall-in-a-bag” is a collapsible 6-foot high x 12-foot wide framed flexible wall that fits in a small bag making storage and transportation a snap. Manufactured by Walluping Industries Inc. based in Spokane, Washington, The Wallup can be assembled in a matter of minutes. The Wallup takes minutes to install. Easily erected without the use of strings or other attachments, the Wall-in-a-bag has applications as a privacy barrier, wind protection, sun shelter, shower stall, lean-to, changing room, tent, shelter from the weather, temporary bathroom, as well as an unlimited number of other uses. In addition to being used by RVers and campers, this free-standing portable wall will appeal to hunters, golfers, sports teams, advertisers, vendors, and even equestrians as horse stalls and outdoor tack rooms. Invention of the Wallup The Inventor of the Wallup spent his younger days scrounging the Cascade forests for neat things, elusive trout, forgotten forest ponds, and secluded valleys. On one of his many outings with friends found them caught by the wind playing a game of cards. He swore revenge and on the next camping trip the Wallup! began life as a tarp braced with conduit poles. Many years of trial and error led to the present design. After many prototypes, material tests, and failures, the current Wallup! was created. In just a few minutes the Wallup assembles into a 6-foot-high by 12-foot-wide freestanding wall. The first of the prototypes were sewn out of the... Read more

Homemade Teardrop Trailers Make Comeback
March 2, 2011 by Rex Vogel · 7 Comments
Gary Daniel and Don Wheeler are two -it-yourselfers who built their own teardrops—compact, efficient travel trailers measuring just 4 feet by 8 feet. Central Illinois Recreational Show David Clemente of Janesville, Wisconsin, built a teardrop trailer from the information in a 1939/1947 Mechanix Illustrated magazine. It is nicely finished and used regularly for camping. Photo courtesy Allen Penticoff and Rock River Times Daniel and Wheeler will be among teardrop owners who will display their rigs at the Central Illinois Recreational Show at the Peoria Civic Center from Friday (March 4) through Sunday, the Bloomington Pantagraph reported. The show used to be just for motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth-wheels, but it has expanded in recent years with the growth of the Civic Center. Now, besides recreational vehicles, vendors will represent campgrounds, tow-vehicle dealers, boats, three-wheeled motorcycles, trail bikes, all-terrain vehicles, and even golf carts sales. This year’s highlight will be the small pull-behind trailers known as “tear-drop trailers.” Teardrops have been around since the 1930s—many were home-built—and were popular because of their sleek, aerodynamic design and lightweight materials. Several tear-drop trailers designed by local campers will be on display at the show. What is a teardrop? (The following information on teardrop trailers courtesy teardrops.net) Anyone who has ever owned (or used) a teardrop trailer can tell you that the most... Read more
