RV.Net Blog AdminWhen Kristy and I travel in our Airstream, we become “part-time full-timers.” In other words, we are full-time Airstream travelers for an extended period of time. But (so far, anyway) we always return to the comfort of a house sans wheels. Our longest stretch full-timing in our 25-foot long tin can is five months. It’s always a bizarre sensation when we return to our brick-and-mortar home after a few months in the Airstream. In the vast world of cavernous recreational vehicles, our Airstream is pretty small. But there’s a strange transition that happens when you adjust to the full-time experience. You get used to it. After a couple weeks of full-timing, you quickly adjust to the new normal. While this may seem extreme to some, for others a five-month Airstreaming journey is just a warmup. Yes, there are those who travel for even longer periods of time in even smaller rigs. Enter Lani and Chris, a young couple who have traveled for a couple of years in a 23-footer. This is another couple who decided to push the “work from home” concept to the extreme.... Read more
Grizzly Bear Kills Man in Yellowstone
July 7, 2011 by Sean Michael · 13 Comments
For more from the “Best RV/Caravan Blog 2011,” please visit our award-winning website: LongLongHoneymoon.com Yesterday a couple of hikers experienced a “worst case scenario” bear encounter. After embarking on a hike near Yellowstone’s Canyon Village (where as a college student I chopped veggies in the employee kitchen) they surprised a mama grizzly bear and her cubs. The bear defended her cubs, attacking the husband and wife. The park service issued this description of the attack: “At approximately 11:00 a.m., at a point about a mile and a half from the trailhead, the couple walked out of a forested area into an open meadow. It appears that the couple spotted a bear approximately 100 yards away and then began walking away from the bear. When they turned around to look, they reportedly saw the female grizzly running down the trail at them. The couple began running, but the bear caught up with them, attacking the husband. The bear then went over to the wife, who had fallen to the ground nearby. The bear bit her daypack, lifting her from the ground and then dropping her. She remained still and the bear left the area.” Other hikers heard the woman’s screams and called rangers to the scene. But it was too late. Tragically, the husband was mauled to death. The park has closed hiking trails near the mauling, but the bear will not be hunted or captured. This is because she was acting naturally in defense of her cubs. It was a textbook... Read more
VIDEO: Tornadoes? Floods? You need a WEATHER RADIO!

Severe weather and camping go together like ice cream and motor oil. Okay, that’s a pretty horrible analogy, but I’m trying to emphasize that RVs and emergency weather are not a good combination. It’s obvious but it bears repeating. After a while, we tend to treat our “homes on wheels” as homes, and technically they are homes – but that doesn’t make them safe. I have yet to encounter an RV with a basement. We’ve experienced a few harrowing storms while camping in our Airstream. Sure, a little rain is nice. Even a powerful rainstorm with heavy rain can be pleasant. But a windstorm? That’s a different ball of wax. Suppose a tree gets blown into your RV? (Check out our video for the likely result.) What about floods? It may sound bizarre, but many campers have encountered flash flooding. As you might imagine, RVs don’t fare too well when pitted against torrential waves of water. I have somewhat fond memories of the lightning storm we experienced on the Gulf coast of Florida, when a gust of wind snapped our ceiling fan cover COMPLETELY OFF the camper in a torrential downpour. We taped a plastic bowl to the ceiling to keep our interior dry. I have much LESS fond memories of the storm we survived in Michigan. The two words no camper ever wants to hear: tornado warning. For the remainder of this article, and ANOTHER VIDEO that shows this radio in action, check out our website: LongLongHoneymoon.com. Also, now you can BUY SEAN’S BOOK ABOUT RV CAMPING ON KINDLE... VIDEO: Alabama Tornado Disaster
May 5, 2011 by Sean Michael · 6 Comments
Long Long Honeymoon is usually a lighthearted website. We tout ourselves as celebrating “the fun stuff” as it relates to Airstream RV camping. Usually that is our focus. But when a historic disaster happens in our backyard, it can’t be ignored. And this topic DOES relate to camping. There’s nothing lighthearted about severe weather and tornadoes. Those of us who camp are especially vulnerable to twisters. The last time I checked, no RV is equipped with a basement. If you plan to do any serious RV camping, sooner or later you will confront this issue. For more information on tornado safety, check out our website: LongLongHoneymoon.com. BUY A BOOK, GIVE A BUCK! Got a KINDLE, NOOK, or IPAD? Buy a copy of Sean’s novel THE LOST SPYDER and we’ll donate $1 to Alabama Tornado Relief! CLICK HERE TO BUY ON KINDLE or CLICK HERE TO BUY ON NOOK Read More →
A Fond Look Back at SUPERMOON
March 21, 2011 by Sean Michael · 2 Comments
One of the reasons we camp is to get closer to nature. But in this instance, “nature” just happened to be getting closer to us — and even though it was a couple hundred thousand miles away, it was still quite spectacular. Every once in a while, the wonders of the universe remind us that we inhabit a pretty special corner of the Milky Way. Recently we experienced a so-called “SUPERMOON,” which is not a pants-dropping superhero, but rather a condition that exists when the moon is unusually close to the earth. Here’s the way SUPERMOON looked from our neck of the woods. It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's SUPERMOON! When this photo was taken, the moon was a mere 221,565 miles away from earth. In other words, if you were to stack enough unsold Taylor Hicks CDs on top of one another to extend from the earth to the moon…well, you’d need a lot fewer CDs. (But this would be a rather silly exercise, and I predict you would encounter serious logistical problems once you exit the earth’s atmosphere.) Scientists also claim that SUPERMOON was 15% larger and 20% brighter than the norm. Although I have no way to confirm these statistics, I nevertheless believe them to be correct — mainly because we were able to snag a number of photos in which the moon does not resemble a frosted incandescent lightbulb. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed SUPERMOON, wherever on planet earth you may reside. It was proof that sometimes “the best... Read more
Got a Kindle, Nook, or iPad? Check out Sean’s novel!

Reading and camping go hand-in-hand. There are few things in life more satisfying than an engaging story, well told, after dark. One of my wife’s favorite evening pastimes is to settle down with a good book. (That’s usually when I’m working on our website.) This year, one of her marquee Christmas gifts was a Nook e-reader — a gift from my mother, who is herself also a voracious reader. I’ll always remember the first time I read Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. I was a summer kitchen employee at Yellowstone National Park. In those days I was employed by Hamilton Stores, an organization staffed mostly by retirees. The retirees liked to take long afternoon breaks (we’re talking 3-hour siestas from 1 until 4) so I often found myself with a few hours to kill in the middle of the day. My companion was Hemingway. I loved that book, and will always pair it with the experience of being in Yellowstone at that time. CLICK THE BOOK to visit the author's website. For most of my adult career, I have been classified as “writer.” Even when designing websites or short films, the ultimate job description is to write. And so I have finally tackled the Mount Everest of writing tasks, and produced my first novel. It’s called “The Lost Spyder,” and is available now on Amazon KINDLE (CLICK HERE FOR AMAZON KINDLE) and Barnes & Noble NOOK (CLICK HERE FOR NOOK). It’s priced to sell — only $4.99! Electronic readers like Kindle and Nook are a godsend... Read more
VIDEO: Merry Christmas to All from LongLongHoneymoon.com

When we travel in our Airstream (thoroughly documented on LongLongHoneymoon.com), we often reference the philosophy of “less is more.” You know, sometimes bigger is not necessarily better. Indeed, one reason we camp is to purposefully experience a simpler life. Here’s an unlikely “less is more” tale that’s somewhat documented in our Christmas card video. Best $10 we spent this year? Our Christmas tree, a real one that was among the neglected leftovers on the lot. Just a few days ago, we were going through the season as usual, but for whatever reason had not put up a tree. In years past, we’ve gotten some pretty large trees into our house. That history was part of the problem. Large trees are quite lovely, but they are a bear to purchase, move, and decorate. It’s an intimidating task that wipes out much of your day. We’ve still got deep scratches on our back door from the gigantic tree we wrestled into the house a few years ago. So this year we had been negligent on the tree trimming front. We were playing Christmas carols and putting up other decorations in our house. But NO tree! Sure, we were enjoying the season, but it felt like something was missing. One morning it dawned on me: less is more! Our Christmas tree doesn’t need to be a redwood. My favorite Christmas cartoon is the classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas” in which our befuddled hero takes home a neglected little tree and shows it some love. Why couldn’t we do the... Read more
Last-Minute Stocking Stuffers for RV Campers!

Or else we'll punish our staff artist.* What’s that burning smell? Is that propane? No, it’s chestnuts roasting on an open campfire. And what’s going on over there? Jack Frost is nipping at Nipsey Russell’s nose! (Am I the only one who remembers Nipsey Russell? Whatever happened to that guy?) But I digress. It’s the holiday season. If you’re like me, you’ve still got gifts yet to purchase. That’s where we come in. By popular demand, you can now give the gift that keeps on giving: LONG LONG HONEYMOON on DVD! These DVDs contain ALL of our videos from over the years, PLUS brand new original audio commentary soundtracks. We’ve received a lot of nice customer feedback about our DVD series. Here are a few ACTUAL TESTIMONIALS: “The DVD’s are fantastic! Please keep up the wonderful work. I can only imagine all the effort it takes to set up all the shots and edit all the video. If it helps any, they are very much appreciated by those of us who are RV nuts.” – Dave in Maryland “The wife and I have already watched the DVD and loved it. Keep up the good work.” – Bo in Arkansas “Tell your friends to stuff their stockings with these DVDs. It will save me a LOT of work on Christmas Eve.” — St. Nick in North Pole (Okay, I confess to making up that last testimonial. The others are legit though!) Season’s Greetings to all! Read More →

Once again a cool breeze is blowing, leaves are gently falling, and we’re raking said cold leaves out of our frigid backyard. Yes, autumn has returned. Kristy and I hail from the Deep South, where college football is as intrinsic to local culture as fried chicken, fried okra, and fried… well, just about anything. Read more Read More →
VIDEO: Adding LED LIGHTS to Your RV!
November 17, 2010 by Sean Michael · 4 Comments
To upgrade, the philosopher Beyonce teaches us, is to live. I’m not sure if Beyonce has ever gone camping. But that’s the cool thing about owning an Airstream or any other RV — like a brick-and-mortar home, it’s a constantly evolving platform. With the simple flick of a plastic card, you can express your ideas and/or wreck your bank account. Let There Be… LED from Sean Michael on LongLongHoneymoon.com. Some upgrades are cosmetic. For example, our bathroom revamp (See, generally, Old School, New Faucet) was largely a matter of appearance (although the new faucet handles are a vast functional improvement over the originals).
