Visit Toronto, a vibrant and cosmopolitan city, the fifth largest in North America. Rich in cultural diversity, there are more than 100 languages and dialects spoken in Toronto, and a great variety of food choices as well. It sounds hard to believe, but one third of the Canadian population lives within a 100 miles radius of Toronto. While there, you can enjoy the lakefront, visit Ontario Place -96 acres of man made attractions including a great waterpark downtown-, and take a bird’s eye view from the CN tower, the tallest building in the Americas (at the time of this footage, it was still the tallest building in the world but has since been surpassed in height by the Burj Dubai). Toronto West KOA Kampground is a common selection for RVers, with large leveled sites and friendly staff to assist travelers beyond the norm.

In this video you can also catch a glimpse of a rare RV -a Rotel- which seems to have more than 20 bunk beds. These are used on tours around the world, organized by a German company, Rotel Tours. Before you sign up, take into account that travelers probably have more limited space than most of us RVers are used to …

Campground Advice - Part 3 - Tips from Bernice

July 2, 2008 by Bernice Beard · 2 Comments

This is the third and last set of campground related tips I have to offer. Besides the advice listed below, as well as that in Part 1 and Part 2, if you have any other piece of information you’d like to share with beginners (or veterans), please do so by posting a comment. RVers are known to be very helpful to one another and sharing information often makes a huge difference. When we are at the campground, we want to minimize the hassle and leave the most time for enjoyment, so I hope some of these tips can help you do just that and avoid, to the extent possible, those occasions in which a small detail can turn an otherwise perfect stay into a problematic one.

  • Before you level your RV, make sure the cord and hoses can reach the electricity, water and sewer hookups.
  • On a cold night, if the hose to the RV from the campground spigot freezes, detach it and put it into the shower to thaw. Read more

    North to Alaska…Waconia, Minnesota

July 1, 2008 by Ron Dalby · Leave a Comment

We are gradually finding our way west and north as we make stops to renew old friendships and take the time to investigate things we’ve always wanted to see. As for the latter, this red-winged blackbird was a case in point.

For decades I have been intrigued by this particular bird but had never had the opportunity to see one up close. On the recommendation of long-time friends, we pulled into a county park and campground a few miles west of Waconia late one afternoon to spend a few days visiting. To my surprise, red-wings were everywhere, and the park provided a short boardwalk through a swampy area were there were thousands of them. We set up camp, and as the sun began to set, wandered down the boardwalk. The bird shown here was just one of many that struck a pose for my camera.

Spring…and subsequently summer…have been late coming to this part of the country this year, as you can tell from the still-brown reeds in the background of this picture. New growth was just beginning to appear near the surface of the swamp when we visited in mid-June.

Campground Advice - Part 2 - Tips from Bernice

June 25, 2008 by Bernice Beard · Leave a Comment

As a continuation from Part 1, you will find here a few more tips on how to select and take full advantage of the campground, as well as little tricks for special circumstances. If you have any comments, please post them, they are very welcome.

    • Use a directory, such as the Trailer Life Directory for Campgrounds, RV Parks & Services to locate campgrounds. Directories let you know campsite sizes as well as activities and facilities. They also give clear directions to campgrounds.
    • With over 16,000 public and private campgrounds in the United States, RVers have lots of choices. Once you choose a campground, you still have some decisions to make. Some campgrounds allow campers to choose their own campsites. In addition, you’ll probably be asked whether you want full hookups or just water and electricity. Some campgrounds offer cable television hookup. Keep in mind that all these amenities will affect the price you pay.
    • Many campgrounds near highways offer recreation rooms, swimming, hiking, perhaps a lake, and sometimes planned weekend activities. Resorts that cater to long-term residents, on the other hand, offer guests a busy calendar of daily programs-exercise, painting, music, and other activities. Often a full-time leader plans social events.
    • Keep all your campground membership cards together in the glove compartment so they’re handy when you register at a campground. Also, you won’t have to carry them in your billfold or purse.
    • If your travel schedule is such that you arrive early at a campground, let the office staff know that you will not stay longer than 24 hours overall.
    • Most campgrounds have a night registration procedure so that if you arrive after the office is closed, you can choose a site and pay in the morning.
    • If a campground is full and you cannot camp in an overflow area, ask the office staff to refer you to another campground that has space.
    • Expect to find places without full hookups. Know how to boondock, or dry camp (camp without any hookups). Always keep a sufficient supply of fresh water and leave empty space in the gray and black water tanks.

This is what I have for today, Happy Camping, and I’ll be back with more…

    Camping on the Beach!

    June 24, 2008 by Sean Michael · 3 Comments

One of the most delightful aspects of RV ownership has been discovering the variety of environments in which we can camp.

When we first started shopping for our travel trailer, Kristy and I were motivated by the prospect of college football tailgating. In the Deep South, tailgating has been raised to a high art form; the well-equipped RV is its ultimate creative expression. Little did we realize that so many purposes other than tailgating would emerge. Ironically, although we’ve done an outrageous amount of camping, we have yet to take our Airstream to a football game! But after more than a year of ownership, we’ve taken our RV just about everywhere else.

We’ve camped in friends’ driveways and in Wal-Mart parking lots. We’ve camped in national, state, and city parks. We’ve camped in public and private campgrounds. We’ve camped in the mountains, we’ve camped alongside majestic canyons, and yes, as today’s video demonstrates – we’ve camped on the beach.

RV Today Archive - San Francisco - Part 2

June 23, 2008 by RV Today Archive · 1 Comment

As shown in Part 1, San Francisco is full of beautiful and interesting sights. However, driving an RV through San Francisco, with its crooked streets, is not always a good idea. But, do not despair. In this video, popular TV host Stew Oleson shows us the great San Francisco RV Resort next to the ocean to set up camp if you are planning to visit the San Francisco area with your RV. You can sometimes even arrange to be picked up at the RV Park for a tour of San Francisco, the wine country, or the Redwoods. It is conveniently located just 20 minutes south of San Francisco. Watch the video below:

This RV park is pretty popular, you may want to reserve in advance…

    I Love my Satellite Internet

    June 19, 2008 by Chris Guld · 8 Comments

Wooded site with satellite Internet access at Lost Valley Lakes

I write a lot about the 3 different ways to get high-speed Internet as you travel: Wi-Fi, Cellular, and Satellite. We use all three. Satellite is by far the most expensive. In the past year, we have heard from so many people who love their cellular Internet that I’ve considered getting rid of our satellite dish and going all cellular. Read more

Campground Advice - Part 1 - Tips from Bernice

June 18, 2008 by Bernice Beard · Leave a Comment

The best part about camping in an RV is, of course, being able to take along some creature comforts. “Roughing it” is even easier when you follow the advice of veteran campers and campground owners.

It’s always best to make reservations so the campground can plan to accommodate your rig, especially if the area you’ll be visiting has a lot of visitors. Also, unless you’re familiar with an area, you never know what special events might be going on. The campground you want to stay at may be full of people in town for an event. Make sure that the type of campsite you reserve is what you really want. For example, you might call a campground and say you want a site with electric and sewer service. If you realize on arrival that you really wanted full hookups, the staff may not be able to accommodate you. Also, if you don’t stay at a campground where you have made a reservation, don’t be surprised if you are charged as a no show. If you can’t go to the campground, call to let the staff know, and be sure to get a cancellation number. Without a cancellation number, credit card companies will not reverse the charge.
