Affinity Events To Host 17 RV Events During Spring 2010 Show Season
December 15, 2009 by RV.net Emagazine Editor · 2 Comments
Coming off a successful fall show season, Affinity Events will host 17 consumer RV shows during the 2010 spring show season. Affinity Events and show exhibitors are combining efforts to bring the latest RV models and camping supplies to outdoor recreation enthusiasts across the country. The upcoming shows will also feature various campgrounds from across the United States, offering RVers a chance to shop and plan an exciting summer vacation.
“Our fall shows helped bring RV dealers and enthusiasts together at a critical time in the RV industry,” said Tom Gaither, senior V.P. of Affinity Events. “It was a win-win show season. Our exhibiting dealers moved inventory and buyers capitalized on ‘Screamin’ Deals’ offered at the shows.” The Affinity Events fall RV shows drew strong crowds and helped participating dealers sell to first-time buyers as well as long-time RV enthusiasts. Gaither points to Affinity’s strong connections to RV enthusiasts through its many clubs, services, media outlets and events as a key differentiator for Affinity shows. “The relationships we maintain with RVers offer us an intimate understanding of the RV industry,” said Gaither. “We are proud to match RV buyers with dealers and we look forward to continued success for our show exhibitors in 2010.” Read more
“Alaska: RV Adventure of a Lifetime” – FAQ
June 6, 2008 by John Holod · 2 Comments
Hi John:
A couple of years ago, my wife Penny and I visited your booth and film exhibit at the Seattle RV show. We purchased two Alaska videos and subsequently a third. We really enjoy having them and have shared them with friends who will be traveling with us.
Two rigs (both Class A 34 and 35 feet) headed from Seattle to Alaska June, 2009 is the plan. Probably six to eight weeks. First timers to Alaska for all four of us. The question is: would you recommend taking at least one “toad” with us?
Mark,
Glad you enjoyed the DVD’s It sounds as if you are going to have a great trip! Take the whole eight weeks if you can, you will never run out of things to see!
A “toad” is a luxury in Alaska, not a necessity. When I made my first video about Alaska I drove a 34ft Class A with no toad. I spent 3 months in the state filming. There were times I wished I would have had one but most of the time I was happy not to drag it along. It cuts down on your MPG and takes a beating behind the Class A because of all the gravel. If you do decide to take a toad make sure it is well covered and protected.

Thinking about Alaska? By Adrienne Kristine
I was mildly interested in going to Alaska, especially after hearing from a fellow workamper who worked there one summer. She arrived in May and helped the local businesses open for the season before beginning her workamping job. Then she wrote about “termination dust”: the first sign of snow signaling the end of the season and notice to leave.
Recently, I taught at the Life on Wheels in Tucson where I was fortunate to watch an abridged version of John Holod’s trips to Alaska filmed by his company, RV Adventure Videos. After the presentation, I drove home still thinking about what I saw. I was hooked.

You are not allowed to live in your RV while on board the ferry. While staying in your RV home would seem like a good idea we all know that old Uncle Joe would get up in the middle of the night, turn on his propane to cook some eggs, and blow everybody up! Once you drive your RV on board you lock it up and head upstairs to the deck.
You can rent a state room but that will cost extra. You can also sleep out on the deck in a tent or deck chair, but most of us are too old for that. Again I get back to the idea of taking the trip in short hops. Most runs between ports are only four to eight hours. Get off the ferry and spend the night on dry land, sleep in your own bed, eat your own food and then head out again when you are ready.
The ferry system does make allowances for pets. If you travel with a dog there will be announcements every few hours letting you know you can go downstairs to walk Fido. I suggest they also rent you a small piece of Astroturf.

continued from April 4th …….
On their website, the Alaska Marine Highway System suggests that you make reservations on the ferry six months in advance. We found that wasn’t necessary, unless you were leaving from Bellingham WA. We rode the ferries for over four months while shooting our “Alaska Inside Passage” video and we were never on a ferry that was more than half-full. If you did start your trip in Bellingham (which we don’t suggest for cost reasons) you might need one, but starting in Prince Rupert BC we never did.
Making reservations makes your trip too structured. You never know how long you want to spend in a town until you get there and check it out.

March 1st & 2nd found us doing presentations at the Phoenix RV Show. Right after the show ended Jodie headed to the airport for a flight to Kansas City. She then had to rent a car and drive 160 miles south to Miami OK to do a Travelogue dinner show the next night. It was a long way to go for just one show but that’s how the schedule worked out. It’s hard to plan shows a year in advance!

Can I buy a ticket from Ketchikan to Haines and get off at different ports and just get back on to continue my trip?
Stefan,
Yes, this is the way we suggest you travel the inside passage. Let’s say you are traveling North from Prince Ruppert BC (much cheaper than leaving from Bellingham WA). Buy your ticket from Prince Rupert to Katchikan, that’s all. It’s about a 6-hour run.
When you arrive in Ketchikan drive your RV into town and find a camground. Stay in Ketchikan 2 days or 2 weeks, make your own schedule. Make syre you do a flight-seeing trip with Taquan Air http://www.taquanair.com/ over Misty Fjords National Monument. When you have seen everything you want to see in Ketchikan head over to the ferry ticket office and get a ticket to the next ferry stop in Wrangell. You should have no trouble getting on the next ferry out.

Continued from last week:
Traveling by the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry is a wonderful way to see this great state. The ferry will take you to Ketchikan, just like the cruise ships do, but instead of getting off the ship to sight-see for just a few hours with 12.000 of your closest friends you can drive your RV, car, bicycle or even walk off the ferry and stay for two days or two weeks! You make your own schedule. The best part is that at 6:00PM every evening you can go down to the harbor and wave good-by to those 12,000 cruise ship tourist! Now you can have the place, almost, to yourself.

Each year tens of thousands of people take a cruise ship up Alaska’s Inside Passage to enjoy the magnificent scenery and wildlife. Maybe you have taken one yourself. Next time, how about bringing your house with you and making your own schedule. You can do that by using the Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS).
The ferry system serves as the bus linking all the port towns along the coast. It travels about 1000 nautical miles north from Bellingham Washington to Skagway Alaska, covering the entire Inside Passage, then continues west all the way out to the Aleutian Islands. Not only does it stop in the major cruise ship ports like Ketchikan, Juneau, Sitka, and Skagway, it also stops at small port towns like Wrangell, Petersburg, and Haines. These are working towns that do not rely on tourism. Visit them and you get to see the real Alaska.

Joe & Vicki Kieva’s “RV’ing Alaska: What to Expect – How to Prepare”On February 1st Jodie did two shows at Merced Community College in Merced CA for sponsor Mar nee Chula. It was the world premier of our new “Alaska: RV Adventure of a Lifetime”. The crowd is always great here. The audience really enjoyed the new video and laughed at all the bad jokes! What more could I ask for, all the hard work was worth it!Jodie flew back to Tucson the next day and we would be together, for a couple days at least. While we were home and had some time off from our busy show schedule what did we do? We did a show! We set up a presentation of our new Alaska in the ballroom at the Voyager RV Resort, our home base. About 200 people showed up for a fun night. After the show we gave tours of our Born Free coach which was parked outside. We love showing it off!
Our short home stay ended on the 19th when Jodie flew out to do the MPLS RV Showand I flew out to work the Seattle RV Show. I don’t know who got the worse end of the deal weather-wise, it was cold in MPLS but cold and wet in Seattle. Both shows went well and we had great crowds. As a bonus, I got to have dinner with Nelson Christensen and Avis, my friends from the old AC&NW band days in Maui. We are trying to put together a band reunion in Hawaii. After the Seattle show I flew home to work on finishing the Kieva’s DVD while Jodie went on to freeze for another week at the Milwaukee RV Show.Joe & Vicki Kieva’s new “RVing Alaska: What to Expect – How to Prepare” is now ready for purchase. We spent three weeks in Alaska with them this summer shooting the “how to” DVD. Our DVD’s show you what there is to see in Alaska while there’s explains how to get ready for a trip to the last frontier! We now have three great Alaska DVD’s to help you save time and money on your Alaska RV adventure of a lifetime! While Jodie was on the road I got to fill in for her selling her great new jewelry at Market Days in our RV resort. There is nothing I do better than selling jewelry to women. Well, I actually do everything better.
