I Love travel blogs!  Want to know what it’s really like to RV in Alaska?  Check out Gundyville’s Blog or Dennis and Carol’s Blog.   How about staying in an RV in Mexico for months, even years?  Just take a look at George and Tioga’s Blog.  Do you keep a blog (an online journal) as you travel?  If so, you might be listed in HitchItch.com along with nearly 200 others.  If you want to learn all about life as a non-retired fulltime RVer, and get a laugh in the process, then follow the daily blog of Nick Russell and the Gypsy Journal.

Our Blog is Our Memory

We’ve been fulltime RVers since 2003, and I simply cannot imagine being without our blog!  So many times we have a question like “Where did we spend our anniversary in 2004?” or “I want to see the pictures from our day on Mackinac Island”  or “How many Presidential Libraries have we visited?”   blogarchiveAll these questions can be so easily answered by our blog.

  • Where did we spend our anniversary in 2004? This is the easiest question to answer with a blog because every entry is automatically archived by date, so as long as I know that our anniversary is in July, I can view the Blog Archive (see the image at right), expand 2004 then expand July and I can see the entry I wrote about our anniversary.
  • I want to see the pictures from our day on Mackinac Island. To handle that, I use the Search feature and typed in “Mackinac.” It searches every word of all 1,500 posts and, in a fraction of a second, it comes up with a link to the post I wrote on that day.  Blogger is Google after all – search is their thing!
    search
  • How many Presidential Libraries have we visited?  Presidential Libraries are on our List!  We wanted to visit them all and I believe we have.  How can I prove it?  With the Blog of course.  Each time we visit a Presidential Library I write a post about it and attach a Label for Presidential Library.  So now, I can view the list of all my Labels, click on Presidential Library and instantly see all the blog posts over the years where we’ve visited Presidential Libraries.

Holes in the Blog

We are now in our 10th year of Fulltime RVing and I’m getting a bit lazy with the Blog.  I never have been one to write every day, but we’ve been so busy this summer that whole weeks have gone by without a post!  Facebook is another culprit – because it’s so quick and easy to post a picture, or a few words – I do that, and neglect adding anything to the Blog.  I like Facebook a lot, but the Blog is our foundation.  If it’s not in the Blog, I’m likely to forget it ever happened!

Do you Have a Blog?

We give seminars at RV Rallies entitled “Every RVer Needs a Blog.”  We really believe that!  So many people would love to live the RV Lifestyle, we think it’s downright stingy not to share it.  But,even if you don’t  share it, having a blog is the easiest way to keep your own journal with text and pictures that you can reference anytime.  You can even make it into a coffee table book to enjoy without a computer!  If you want to learn how to make a blog, you will find tutorial videos at GeeksOnTour.tv

What about you?  Do you have a Blog?  Or do you just use Facebook, or photo albums?  If you have a blog you’d like to share, leave the address in a comment here.

This tip brought to you by Geeks on Tour

    You are so right!
I’ve been blogging about camping on Just Camping Out since shortly before we bought our first (and current) travel trailer.
It’s great to be able to look back to earlier trips and see pictures of my kids growing up.
Writing about camping also led to other writing venues. Now I earn enough from my keyboard to pay for each year’s camping excursions. Good deal, huh?
    Thanks for a thoughtful post!

Great……….what a wonderful place to see which house you can safely rob………….
I must admit I enjoy reading some of them but no way will I post I am on a 6 day / 6 week or 6 mo trip. We keep a diary for ourselves for future reference and share with our friends when we return.

  3. Brenda on August 13th, 2012 4:55 pm

Dave, how in the world would someone know which house is yours?? Do you list your physical address somewhere in your blogs???
Back to the original question, yes, I usually blog & post photos when we travel (two trips a year) except for this past spring when for the first time we took two granddaughters, ages 11 & 13, with us to visit relatives in Northern Virginia mountains…we were gone a total of five weeks and will gladly take them again. This trip all the photos ended up on Facebook so their parents could see them right away. Yes, I do have a ’subscribe by email’ link embedded in the blog for those who want to keep track of us.

I cannot believe it.!!.. What has happened to this world?? If it wasn’t for the “good” information that you give us, this would cause me to leave all of you behind. What a waste of time !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wondering when someone starts charging for all the wasted information that is stored in the cloud. It seems that my son in law can’t go anywhere without telling the world what he’s doing ( right now he is giving (selling) plasma. Did you need to know that?) All that hardware storing that information costs money. And someday they are going to start charging for that. And then what seemed so important will no longer be when you have to pay to post. Sorry, I don’t need to know what you are doing.

My wife and I put 20,000 miles on our 1993 Fleetwood Flair in the past 18 months, including a trip to Newfoundland. (The trip over the ocean on the ferry was great!).

Wow, I can’t believe all the negative comments! I’ve been blogging ever since our first long distance trip in a camper van several years ago. I established a permanent blog on wordpress when we upgraded to a larger motor home three years ago. The blog is a way for interested family and friends to follow us, if they want to. They don’t have to “follow” if they don’t want to, but most do. And so far, nobody has figured out our address and robbed us.

I have been doing a travel blog for over 5 years – what a wonderful travel journel for us. I love reading other travel blogs – learned about so many great places to go over the past few years. Plus I have met some great people thru my blog!!

I made the decision to make it about our travels only although sometimes some personal feelings do come thru.

It’s amazing to travel and even more great when you have a camera in hand. if you don’t have the time to write whilst on holiday it would be great to at least post the pictures up and write snippets on what is going on in the pictures. That’s another great way to share the fantastic memories of a holiday. Keep the great posts coming!

Try geocaching! All it takes is a cheap, hnldhead GPS unit (which is a plus to have camping anyway), and you and your friends can try your hand at modern day treasure hunts. There are geocaches everywhere and it can be a lot of fun! See link below.Basically, geocaching is using the GPS to navigate yourself to a spot where someone has hidden a cache, the web site will tell you all you need to know.

I know that when we take a family trip, we make sure the kids take lots of pictures and write their friends and family about their trip. Then when we get home the wife updates the family blog with our pictures and stories.
