Last year, I wrote an article, “Get your Verizon Droid or iPhone before July 7 (2011)” to urge new Verizon customers to act quickly. Now, they’re at it again! Last year, on July 7, Verizon ended the unlimited data plan for new customers. This year (we don’t know exactly when) they will end it for existing customers. Meaning, if you have an unlimited data plan now, when you upgrade your phone and sign a new 2 year contract, you will lose that unlimited data – there will be no ‘grandfather’ rights. They will be implementing tiered and family sharing plans instead. For more details, see this PCWorld Article.
So, if you are eligible for an upgrade, do it NOW. I just upgraded my Droid1 for a new Droid Razr Maxx 4G (a great device!) yesterday, and they continued my unlimited data plan with no questions asked. I now have unlimited Internet access for two more years.
If you’re wondering why an unlimited plan is such a good thing, read my article from last year where I go into much more detail. But, check out the current plan costs. For $30/mo now you only get 2GB of data per month. Although that’s enough for basic email and web-browsing on your phone, it’s not nearly enough if you like watching videos on your phone, or if you like to share your phone’s Internet connection with other devices – like many of us RV travelers do.
Current Verizon Pricing
Although I believe that an unlimited data plan is worth fighting for, it’s not as important as it used to be. It used to be that overages were charged at .25/megabyte. That added up QUICK! If you went over your allotment by just 1GB, your overage charge would have been $250! Now, the overage fee is a flat $10/GB. So, if you have the $30 for 2GB plan and you use 10GB in one month, your bill will be $110. That’s bad, but not heart-stopping like the per megabyte charge.

Uhhh, if we’re talking truly *unlimited* data (and I believe that’s the title of this article) then US Cellular is not a player at all by my reading of their web site. If you add USB tethering to the mix (as I do) then the old Verizon plan is the only extant option as far as I can tell. I’d happily be proven wrong since I do not care for them as a corporation, but traveling as I do with the need to consume mass quantities of ones and zeroes … no choice.
My upgrade was unintended, but I lost my original Droid and thus my recent acquisition of a Droid Incredible 2 (*twice* the incredibility – what a deal!) with the same trusty unlimited data plan that Chris mentions here. This column was where I first learned of the plan on the cusp of my embarking on my first RV Grand Meander two years ago so my thanks again, Ms. Guld, for the tips.

As an avid reader of this blog, an RV’er, and a WISP (Wireless Internet Service Provider), I’d like to add my 2 cents of general education to the subject at hand– “Unlimited Data Plan”. Remember the old saying “there ain’t no free lunch”? It applies here. In the earlier Internet days, unlimited data plans (flat rate Internet plans) was how it worked, because what we did on the Internet, like email and browsing and occasionally updating programs, didn’t use enough of the limited resources to be much of a factor.
Enter video. All that has changed now. Consider an HD streaming movie.. something like 30 high resolution pictures PER SECOND FOR 2 HOURS! Yeah, that adds up really quick, and puts an extremely heavy load on the resources (RF spectrum shared by hundreds of users per cell sector).
So yeah, if you can get in on the unlimited data plan for a while longer, you can possibly feel good about saving money at the expense of Verizon for another year or two, but understand that the days of unlimited necessarily have to end because of the limited resources and the ways we have found to now use those resources. I think Internet will certainly become the main way people access their video entertainment in the future because it is so much more flexible and convenient than being tied to a satellite dish or cable with fixed programming.. but don’t expect it to free— say it with me now– There Ain’t No Free Lunch.
For all you people with unlimited Data there is a new program for FREE Wireless called FoxFi. Check it out it works great on my new Droid Razr Maxx.
For truly unlimited data I use Metro PCS. Their coverage across the USA is greatly improved and they even have 4G service in the metro areas for about $60 per month. Yes, unlimited 4G! By using PDANET on my android I can access the Metro signal on my laptop and PC. It may be a little slow at times but it sure beats $100+ per month with the other guys.
It is my understanding that the Unlimited Plans are ALL going away and that will be by the end of the summer. The afore mentioned subject… “There Ain’t No Free Lunch” and as a Verizon Customer, I have been with them since the day of the bag phone, I recently acquired a new Droid Bionic and the new jetpack internet wifi device. I had to also update my laptop, which I had an old slotted air card…and they don’t even make laptops with the slot anymore. So far, I like the Jetpack, as reception seems good. it doesn’t run long on Battery, especially when more than one device is being used. so far in a month, we are six days from an entire month’s usage and I got a message from Verizon that we have used half of our 5 GB. I pay $50. My old aircard was $60 per month. No watching movies or videos.. so with watching usage for a couple months…you should be able to decide which plan you need.
Thanks for the heads up, I went to a Verizon store and picked up a new Razr Maxx and the sales girl said that it was a good thing I was up grading because she heard that the unlimited plans were going to be phased out. Timely word of cautions from the geeks, Thanks.I also added mobile hotspot to my plan, I know people will say you could use FoxFi or PDA net but I thought I would try this. The hotspot plan is just a monthly and you can add or delete that part whenever, thought I would try it.

Um no. These rumors come aronud every year, and every year, no Verizon . They didnt want it when Apple came to them first back in 2006 and they dont want it now. Why would they, when any crushes the iDont any day of the week, and Android is already selling more phones than Apple anyways?? Plus, ATT knows that without the , they have nothing, so they will pay Apple as much as they want in order to keep it. Why would you ever want such a horrible phone?

It’s already happened. It’s not a rumor. If you upgrade your Verizon phone and take the discounted price with a new 2 year commitment then you have to choose an new share data plan. The unlimited data is dead if you do this. The only way to keep unlimited data is to pay full retail for the new phone and don’t renew your contract.
