It’s a rare RVer that doesn’t use some type of GPS device to assist in navigation. When we sold our house and hit the road in 2003, we used the Streets and Trips software on our laptop with a little USB GPS receiver. A few years later we bought a Garmin dashboard GPS, then a Rand McNally RVND, and now a Magellan. Those are all great devices and we use them all, but I like using my Droid smartphone with Google Navigation the best! Why do I love it? Let me count the ways:
- It’s in my hand. I am in the passenger seat – this is not a good thing for a solo driver – but for a navigator, it is so comfortable to hold the device in your hand to be able to adjust your view, search for locations, or change settings. When I have to manipulate the screen on a device that is mounted to the dash, I have to sit up in my seat and contort my body in order to see the screen and be able to properly use the controls. If we’re using Streets and Trips on the laptop, that’s easier than the dashboard units, but it’s big and awkward.
- It’s fast. My navigation advice is usually needed when Jim is driving according to the dashboard unit and he says something like, “this next turn doesn’t seem right, what should I do?” I need to quickly get a birds-eye view of where we are vs. where we’re going, and evaluate the choices of how to get there. With a simple pinch gesture, the Droid responds with what I need – instantly.
- It’s clear. Even though it is a tiny screen, the resolution is so good that I can read every description and see every feature. I can even turn on satellite view and see the trees, rivers, bridges, and buildings. Any of the other devices seem almost childish in their graphics by comparison.
- It’s Google. I can search … and find … anything. Any campground, park, store, address, restaurant, or service – this is Google, it’s on the Internet and up to date. Traffic information is quite reliable within about 15 minutes.
- It’s my smartphone. My email is on there, so I can look up the email for the campground reservation and touch the address to navigate there, or call the phone number. Or I can use my Passport America App to find a campground, then just touch ‘directions’ and my Google Navigation takes over with turn-by-turn voice directions to the exact address. Or I can browse to the website for the Presidential Museum we want to visit – see an address on the web page, touch it, and choose Navigate to there.

It’s not perfect – nothing is! The main drawback is that the information is coming from the Internet, so if you lose cell signal – you lose your maps. There are ways to download your route in advance, but that requires that you know where you’re going … in advance! We will not be getting rid of our dashboard units any time soon – and we still think Streets and Trips on our laptop is the best way to plan our travels – but Google Navigation on our Android smartphones is the clear favorite GPS navigation device for Geeks on Tour!

I have used my Droid for over a year as my primary navigation tool. Lynn, my wife and navigator, keeps track of our course by map and keeps me on track. I’m traveling alone now for a couple of months, so have mounted the phone on my Garmin base with a self-made adaptor to keep it in place. It’s mounted in a handy place and should work well. Tomorrow will be the test. I have to drive from North Phoenix to Goodyear, AZ, to get some work re-done on the coach. it’s about 25 miles and should be a perfect exercise for the system.

I’m in the minority category once again LOL.
I do not have a GPS. I did have one when I started full-timing about 1 1/2 years ago but it died on me. No loss as far as I was concerned ’cause it took me down many a country road or through residential streets and stressed me to no end.
I now google the directions to where I want to go the following day and that has been working very well for me. Yes, I do miss a turn on occasion, however, not nearly as much as when the GPS would tell me to TURN LEFT NOW !!! and I would be on the Interstate with no LEFT or even an Exit in sight.
Totally agree. Have a dash mounted and it has never been correct from day one. Also have a droid and it works great…now if DW can learn to use it..

On my iPhone we use MotionX GPS and it relies on the GPS locator in the phone without using the internet for our connection. We agree that you can’t always rely on them but we have found that Motion X GPS for smart phones is really a great alternative the the separate GPS device.

I’ve been using my Droid for a little over 2 years now and love it. Although, my ex gave her the name “Helga” because we were entering Richland, WA and the droid pronounced it “Reichland”. A little “smart phone” humor!!!
What has happened? Has everyone lost their MAPS ? You do remember those, don’t you? We traveled all over Europe with maps. Only once did a citizen indicate that we had to go back.
It’s not that I don’t have anything other than a map and a damn good navigator, but Jeez, give us some time off from all the electronics.
I have too much to say regarding excuses from people regarding this. The computer is really quite enough to live life. Please, don’t forget your maps. They work 24/7 all the time.
Since our semi useful Garminphone (T-Mobile) has occasionally steered us incorrectly, we continue to not only use maps while driving, but also pre-plan our basic route with Streets & Trips. Nothing is perfect, but it sure stinks to get caught having to back-up with a Toad.

You may be reading the wrong blog. When the blog is titled “Geeks on Tour,” I sort of expect to hear about electronics, computers, and Internet connectivity as well as electronic navigation. But maybe that’s just me. I could be wrong.

You forgot to mention that the other advantage to using Google maps for navigation on an Android phone is that the program includes voice guided navigation. Unlike other smartphones, this feature is free. Its an expected service that closer matches the capability of regular dash GPS units. One other feature about the Google maps is that they are updated by Google for FREE!. I know other GPS manufacturers are starting to do this but Google has been doing this since the beginning. And lastly, it does a pretty good job of telling you how heavy traffic is so you can find alternate routes if you would prefer.
I have only owned one GPS device in my 7 years of full time rving. It’s a Lowrance and it took me about 5 years to learn what is meant by take the next right or left. It means at the next major intersection. Luckily I’ve never had to back out of a situation with my toad and I use my drivers intuition to stay away from bad neighborhoods, tight turns and dead ends. If it doesn’t feel right don’t do it! 9 times out of 10 you’ll be right and avoid a sticky situation. There have even been times that I’ve pulled over and actually walked down the road a ways to make sure it was the right one. Using these tools and a little common sense can keep you out of trouble whether using maps, GPS, Smartphone or laptop.
I love my Google Maps app, been using it for two years. It does lead me to trouble occasionally, though. I avoid that now by doing as Denice does, Google the directions the day before, I then check that against my road atlas. When I do hit the road, I pretty much know what lies ahead.
I drive a 32 ft motorhome and have been led to tight turns, low overheads, and just wrong addresses by the GPS. I recently found a GPS Pro Trucker app, CoPilot Live 8, but it costs $150! Might as well get a Garmin.
Your right. The GPS on my iPhone is usually more correct than my Garmin. However, I also use some apps including Oh Ranger, AroundMe, iExit and a couple different park finders.
I have to agree that a traditional GPS is not the best solution when traveling with an RV. I typically map my route out ahead of our trip with google maps on the computer and the send the directions to my iPhone. What I really like to do is use the “street view” function of google maps to actually get a street level view of where we are going. I have even used street view to pick gas station stops. It allows me to pick a gas station that is easy to get to. Instead of getting odd directions from the talking GPS my wife is great at navigating the directions I have mapped out on google prior to the trip.
