A radically new approach to the design of batteries, developed by researchers at MIT,” reports Physorg.com, “could provide a lightweight and inexpensive alternative to existing batteries for electric vehicles and the power grid. The technology could even make ’refueling’ such batteries as quick and easy as pumping gas into a conventional car.”

The new battery uses a method called a semi-solid flow cell, where solid particles are “suspended in a carrier liquid and pumped through the system. In this design, the battery’s active components — the positive and negative electrodes, or cathodes and anodes — are composed of particles suspended in a liquid electrolyte. These two different suspensions are pumped through systems separated by a filter, such as a thin porous membrane.”

The report states that “one important characteristic of the new design is that it separates the two functions of the battery — storing energy until it is needed, and discharging that energy when it needs to be used — into separate physical structures. (In conventional batteries, the storage and discharge both take place in the same structure.) Separating these functions means that batteries can be designed more efficiently . . . ”

If this design works out as tests have indicated, it will have the effect of reducing the size of EV batteries to half their size. It will also reduce the cost making EVs more competitive with gas or diesel vehicles. It also would permit refueling by pumping out the liquid slurry and pumping in a fully charged replacement. Another option would be to swap out the depleted battery for a charged one, similar to what we do now with barbecue propane tanks.

These new semi-solid flow batteries could provide ten times the improvement in energy density over present liquid flow-batteries that have a very low density, and lower the cost below lithium-ion batteries.

Can’t wait till they make RV’s with this technology more accessibly.

It’s about time. “They” have been working on batteries for so long, getting nowhere except for cost, and finally the hard work may now be paying off. Is there a time frame for the release to the general public, or do we endure three years of testing. Great for EV, but what about the “common man” and his battery needs, specifically , the car. And will these work on houses that produce their own electricity? It seems that not all the answers are yet ready. Thanks for the insight,,
Oh a unrelated problem. How come if you screw-up on the CAPTCHA code, or anything else, you have to start all over again? I really don’t understand the propriety of this reasoning. Can’t always remember what I have written, like now. Should I have to do this all over again?

What will the “slurry” from these batteries do to the enviroment ?

    Howdy Bob,

You sure do come up with the latest technology for someoe who lies out in the woods…

When will these be available; did they say? Sounds good, IF IT WERKS!!!!

Smooth roads, clear skies & balmy breezes !!!!!!!!!!

Hi Bob, I suppose, like all new things that come to the market. These batteries will be priced so high that the common people can’t afford them! Well, we shall wait to see!I think that will be the best thing that has happened to the battery as we know
it.The way all batteries are built now, is, that are built to sell, not last very long.
By the way. I have invented a better product to keep a car or truck on a tow-dolly.
It will keep it from moving backward as the dolly moves forward or the binders get loose on rough roads. I have tried it on my travels, pulling a tow dolly. If any one is interested in helping me get this patented and on the market. I will give them 1/3
of the profits. contact me at cell-8504319598 Curt

There are 3 things needed to produce a usable electiic vehicle, a working charger/controller (these are well developed and already available from discount sources), a way to put the power on the ground, also available in a variety of styles and sources, and an effective storage system (battery) that will produce on demand in all temperatures. The stinker is still the storage system and in spite of the research dollars spent in this area the improvements are coming at glacial speed. There is an class A out with current power storage that is rated for 175 miles at real world road speeds. The price is at the high end of its size range so one is not likely to be parked next to you soon. Swapping power packs sounds good until looked at, ask yourself how many brands and sizes are parked in your neighborhood, That is the variety of power packs that would need to be on the shelf for swap. Until “Big Brother” really exists swap out packs will be used by UPS @ FedX and little else. They already swap drive trains in one shift so the system is already there.

Gary, I have a solution for the problem you mentioned about screwing up the CAPTCHA code: When you’rte ready to “Submit Comment” reach up there to the little picture of two arrows chasing each others tails and click on it. It puts a fresh code on the page and then your comment will go where it’s supposed to. I too have had something written with just the way I wanted it to sound, punctuated, edited to look and read so there were no misunderstandings and looked and read like a professional writer had written it and poof! It’s gone because I screwed up the CAPTCHA code thingie. I was so disgusted. There was no way I could possibly remember all that and rewrite it. I was not about to go to all the trouble of doing it twice.
