RV.Net Blog AdminRarely a week goes without a media story about some community somewhere in the United States or Canada imposing restrictive rules, regulations, ordinances, and general hassles on owners of recreational vehicles. Parking restrictions on RVs Rusty Powers stands with his son-in-law, Anthony Lyles, by his RV, that is in violation of a city bylaw because it is too big and will have to be moved elsewhere. Image courtesy Maple Ridge News Here’s a typical article that appeared in The Palm Beach (Florida) Post News: For years Wellington has enforced its laws so that a recreational vehicle or boat must be parked on the side or rear of a lot and behind a 6-foot wall, fence, or landscaping—the maximum height village rules allow. But, perplexingly, village rules also say that the vehicle must not be “clearly visible” to drivers or neighbors. “If it’s 15 feet high but behind a six-foot fence, then I’m sorry, but my sight says it’s clearly visible,” resident Donna Weaver said. The Zen of Boondocking Part XIV – Camping along scenic byways
May 7, 2011 by Bob Difley · 8 Comments
By Bob Difley National Scenic Byways, a program administered in part by the National Forest Service (FS), describes routes through some of the most scenic lands in the country, many through national forests where you can find FS campgrounds and scattered boondocking campsites along your route. You can find the nation’s byways on the America’s Byways website and order a free brochure listing all the byways. Some states also have scenic roads or byways that are not yet listed as “national” scenic byways. You can find these, and often more complete information on the state’s national scenic byways, at the individual state’s byways web page. Type the state name followed by scenic byways in the search box for your state. What fun it is to dawdle along these scenic roadways with no need to travel the entire route between RV resortss on either end, or even further away. When you’ve perfected your boondocking skills, you can find multiple dry-camping/boondocking camping possibilities along the byway enabling you to slow down to fully appreciate the area and to spend a few extra days enjoying the beauty of the byway and the nesty campsites or campgrounds you find along the way. Watch for marked FS roads or obtain a list of dispersed camping possibilities and primitive campgrounds from the byway, FS office, or online at sites like Forest Service Camping. National forests also surround many of our National Parks, where you can find FS campgrounds... Read more
MIS AMIGOS and SAN DIEGO

By Monique & Barry Zander, the Never-Bored RVers [Don’t worry. You don’t have to press #1 to read this in English.] First, I want to express my thanks to all who wrote comments and emailed us to tell us their experiences of helping or being helped by other RVers. Some great stories, but maybe more interesting were two lessons we learned. 1) As RVers we are among friends, a very special group of people who want to help their fellow road-travelers, especially RVers new to the lifestyle, and 2) This is an example of Americans and Canadians at their best – giving of themselves, their time, their resources, to help others. We’ll keep the phone lines open [well, actually, the internet lines open] for those of you who haven’t gotten around yet to writing your story of helping or being helped. Please send them to neverboredrvers@gmail.com and I’ll try to put a few together for a future rv.net blog. A TRAVEL BLOG We see lots of interesting, often incredible sights while RVing. I try to convey the real experience of places we visit. When we meet other writers and photographers, they like to ask what I write about. “I’m an ‘experiential writer’,” I tell them (which is difficult to say). What that means to me is I like to tell readers about the feeling of the place we visit rather than the statistics, history or what to do. You can get that from guidebooks, the local chamber of commerce or the Internet. So, there we were on Coronado Island across... Read more
VIDEO: Alabama Tornado Disaster
May 5, 2011 by Sean Michael · 6 Comments
Long Long Honeymoon is usually a lighthearted website. We tout ourselves as celebrating “the fun stuff” as it relates to Airstream RV camping. Usually that is our focus. But when a historic disaster happens in our backyard, it can’t be ignored. And this topic DOES relate to camping. There’s nothing lighthearted about severe weather and tornadoes. Those of us who camp are especially vulnerable to twisters. The last time I checked, no RV is equipped with a basement. If you plan to do any serious RV camping, sooner or later you will confront this issue. For more information on tornado safety, check out our website: LongLongHoneymoon.com. BUY A BOOK, GIVE A BUCK! Got a KINDLE, NOOK, or IPAD? Buy a copy of Sean’s novel THE LOST SPYDER and we’ll donate $1 to Alabama Tornado Relief! CLICK HERE TO BUY ON KINDLE or CLICK HERE TO BUY ON NOOK Read More →
Tornadoes: Southern Storm Damage Extensive
May 4, 2011 by Rex Vogel · 5 Comments
Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. Tornado damage at Courtney's RV Park in Tushka, Oklahoma, Friday, April 15, 2011. Photo courtesy AP/Sue Ogrocki A violent tornado outbreak last week (April 25–28, 2011) affected the southern Midwestern, and eastern United States, leaving catastrophic destruction in its wake. The outbreak produced destructive tornadoes in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, and affected several other areas throughout the Southern and Eastern United States with tornadoes confirmed from Texas to New York. The state of Alabama suffered the worst hit with widespread and destructive tornadoes occurring each day. As early morning Saturday (April 30), at least 339 people were killed as a result of the outbreak. However, the exact number is unknown as recovery efforts continue, and consequently, various sources differ on the exact count. Additionally, hundreds of people still remain missing. All except five of the deaths occurred on April 27, although it is unclear whether fatalities from other days are included in the total number of fatalities. Two hundred forty nine deaths in Alabama alone had been confirmed by the state’s Emergency Management Agency by the morning of April 30. April 27 was the deadliest tornado day in the United States since the 1925 “Tri-State” outbreak, which produced the infamous Tri-State Tornado. Last week’s series of violent storms has been classified by some... Read more

Gr8LakesCamper: Q&A with ARVC Michigan’s New Director
May 4, 2011 by Gr8LakesCamper · 2 Comments
A recent Associated Press story that made the rounds in Michigan suggested that the high cost of gasoline will have a positive impact for campground owners this summer. People can’t afford to take an expensive vacation that includes air travel, hotels, rental cars and restaurants. Instead, they’ll choose to go camping and, furthermore, they won’t travel very far from home to do it. Makes sense to me. A year ago people might not have even taken a vacation. But the economy is slowly coming around, at least enough for people to enjoy more affordable vacations. And camping fits neatly into this category. Reservations at private and state campgrounds in Michigan are up by as much as 18.5 percent over last year, according to the AP article. I would suspect that this trend is not unique to Michigan and would be evident nationwide. I wonder if this means we might just see another RV boom. These people will discover — or, in some cases, rediscover — what we all love about camping with an RV. And if they aren’t camping in an RV, more than a few will look jealously at those of us who are. One of the people quoted in the article was Tracie Fisher, executive director of the Michigan Association of RV Parks & Campgrounds. She said many campers are looking for seasonal options rather than weekend reservations. Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with “Tate” via email, and she answered a few questions for me. First of all, congratulations on being named... Read more
Is Your Dog Insensitive When You Visit Different RV Parks?
May 2, 2011 by Adam G. Katz · 2 Comments
Is Your Dog Insensitive When You Visit Different RV Parks? I wrote in my first book, “Secrets of a Professional Dog Trainer!” (available exclusively at DogProblems.com) about the Three Keys to Successful Behavior Modification: Timing, Consistency and Motivation. Last week I covered Consistency, the second key. The third key is: Motivation. Motivation as it relates to dog training means that: Whatever you do with your dog (either praising him for desired behavior or correcting him for unwanted behavior) it is done with meaning. Have you ever had somebody attempt to compliment you for a job well done… but their compliment was offered in a lethargic tone, with no enthusiasm and no expression? Did their compliment make you feel good? Of course not. With my approach to dog training, a compliment (praise) that lacks any real meaning is what we refer to as: not motivational. It’s the same with a correction: The example I used in my book is the story of the police officer who gives you a ticket for speeding in the fast lane… but the ticket is only for $1. For most people, this isn’t motivational enough to get them to stop speeding. For the police officer’s ticket to be motivational for you– he needs to write you a ticket that is going to be just motivational enough to get you to adjust your behavior. Does Your Dog Drive An RV? If your dog could drive an RV, would he drive a 2.5 million dollar Prevost? Or would... Read more

Freightliner Expands Its Customer Support with USB Card
May 1, 2011 by Rex Vogel · 2 Comments
Is your motorhome built on a Freightliner chassis? Are you planning to purchase a new motorhome in 2011? Already the only chassis manufacturer to offer 24/7 factory-direct support of its motorcoaches, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) is expanding its service with a powerful resource that customers can fit into their pockets. Launched in early 2011, FCCC’s 24/7 Direct initiative created a constantly available, easily accessible network with the goal of providing customers the best possible assistance and answers to even the most complex chassis issues. A company press release indicates that the new 24/7 Direct service cards are being mailed this month to all purchasers of new motorhomes built on an FCCC chassis dating back to January 1, 2011. They’re printed with key support contact information and the customer Vehicle Identification Number to serve as a valuable quick reference, and an embedded USB flash drive makes the card a virtual library of chassis data. By simply flipping the drive out from one end of the card and plugging it into a computer, a customer gains access to a wealth of information including warranties, maintenance schedules, EPA 2010 emission technology featuring selective catalytic reduction (SCR), vendor categories, website links, and entire user manuals. Plus, with a gigabyte of memory on board, there’s plenty of room for additional downloads and updates, enabling customers to utilize the USB for personal storage. 2011 Dutch Star built...
