Bridal veil falls, Yosemite National Park
I recently came across this news item from The Sacramento Bee, by way of the Associated Press:
Yosemite battling pest problem: Ticket-scalpers
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — Yosemite National Park has a pest problem: Ticket scalpers who are selling the limited camping reservations at exorbitant prices.
Spokesman Scott Gediman tells the Sacramento Bee that park officials are becoming more aggressive as they try to curb scalpers.
The nation’s third-most visited park has only 900 reserved campsites available at any given time. They go for $20 a night but scalpers advertising on Craigslist are offering them for $100 or more — sometimes for hundreds of dollars.
They’re also selling permits to climb Half Dome, which the park essentially issues for free.
Gediman says it appears that some scalpers may have devised ways of jumping the reservation queue, possibly through automated computer programs that can instantly snag cancellations.
My only experience with ticket scalpers is at sporting events, where it always seems to be the same guys selling tickets at the same venues, regardless of the game or event taking place. Occasionally I’ll sell or buy an extra ticket, but never more than for face value.
I have no experience with this campsite ticket scalping, and was wondering if anyone else does.
In addition, what are your thoughts on this?
This obviously sounds like its something much bigger than someone selling an unused campsite. And I certainly don’t like that someone can apparently “jump the reservation queue.” That needs to be corrected – fast.
Would you ever buy a campsite from a scalper? Would you pay more than face value for it?
I don’t think I would. For something as big as camping in Yosemite (or any other popular National Park), it would be such a big vacation that planning for it would start months in advance. That planning would include securing our campsite. If, for whatever reason, we don’t get a campsite, then I think we would pick another destination.
But, like I said, I’m curious what others have to say about this.

Well, Gr8LakesCamper, you piqued my interest. I looked on the SF bay area Craigs List, and couldn’t find any scalpers. What I did see was two folks wanting Half Dome permits and I person offering to exchange Half Dome permits for lodging. Couldn’t tell if he just wanted the reservation, or expected it to be paid for as well.
My opinion: An even exchange with no profit should be ok, if you can’t get a refund for unused accommodations. To expect a profit is not good, and should be discouraged or banned in some way. Given the short staffing in park personnel, though, I think they probably have more pressing matters to attend to.
I also went on on Craig’s list for Merced, and found only people wanting campsites, and offering the standard price of $20 per night. I also searched on “general” rather than “tickets”, and found no reservations for sale. Not sure how much of a problem this actually is – or maybe the NPS has actually found a way to put a stop to scalping NPS reservations -something I would be very unhappy to see become prevalent. I can imagine some smart aleck with good computer skills comandeering a number of reservations when they first become available, then trying to sell them – although with the identification required at check-in, I have have hard time seeing how this would actually work.
I saw a “Fraud Warning” on SF Craigslist about this and apparently there’s been some changes to help…
On June 7th Yosemite National Park announced a change to the reservation system in hopes of “curbing” reservation scalpers. Apparently as of June 8th, 2011 all visitors checking into a campsite are required to present a valid ID proving they are the same person that made the reservations. They’re also no longer allowing reservation holders to change names on reservations online and there is a $10 cancellation fee.

Saw the show at Fairfax VA, our first SYTYCD tour. It was a great time. I have to add my voice to the complaints: paelse deal with the blinding lightning and the deafening sound! I thought that was an issue particular to this venue but obviously it’s an ongoing problem. The dancing was amazing, as expected. They did a good job mixing and transitioning the known dance scenes, and throwing in a few news ones (alas, none of them particularly impressive, but with this level of talent, still good). Ricky was the male replacement in several of the favorite numbers and he did great (will that skinny boy catch Melanie’s powerful leap of faith?! he did!). I was very pleasantly surprised when the solos by some of dancers I had paid less attention to turned out to be a blast (Jess, Mitchell, Nick). Tadd was a bit toned down compared to what we had seen during the competition I suspect he had issues (worn out? or minor injury?). Against our better judgement we decided to stay for the autograph session, and hour plus wait late at night with our 5-year old son oh but it was worth it! Seeing them up close, talking to some, taking pictures with my son, unforgettable.I’m glad we caught one of the earlier shows on the tour, because their schedule seems relentless. As someone else wrote here, I think they are going to be worn down as it progresses. Producers, dont be greedy! Give the dancers a bit more rest between shows, let them regain their wonderful energy!
