Harmony in Small Spaces
October 12, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 7 Comments
By the Never-Bored RVers “I could never live with him in an XX-foot RV full-time!” We’ve heard that many times as we chat with others about our life roving across North America, and, for the record, I don’t think it’s ever been the husband saying it. For Monique and me, there is no doubt our compatibility makes being with each other in our confined space easy (most of the time), but here are some suggestions to take into consideration when thinking about life on the road. When the topic is the things you need in your life, the key word is “STUFF.” When you’re talking about living in an RV, the key word is ‘SPACE.” It makes it do-able if you accept the concept that your mate needs his/her own space. We don’t hear wives complaining about hubby going out fishing or playing golf too often. Nor do husbands tell us that their wives spend too much time socializing in the campground. It’s probably the same routine basically as when they were living in bricks-and-mortar, just closer quarters when they re together. In other words, for most couples, living in the confined space of an RV is probably not as grating as it seems to none full-timers. Our everyday-being-with-each-other-full-time relationship works for us because we abide by our “separation of duties.” We find it hard to believe that some other RV-mates don’t have their own unwritten list of responsibilities, but it’s not unusual to hear neighbors screaming at each other when... RV Rallies can be Enhanced by Facebook
October 12, 2010 by Chris Guld · 9 Comments
We presented our computer seminars at 8 different rallies this summer, and at each one, we asked for a show of hands of how many people were using Facebook. We were astonished to see a consistent majority of hands go up. At the last rally, The Escapade, we noticed a lot of Facebook activity amongst our own friends who were there. They arranged happy hours and meetings during the rally, and even some get-togethers after the rally was over. They were able to do this because a large group of them were all friends on Facebook. Sea Center Texas greets its millionth visitor
October 10, 2010 by Rex Vogel · 2 Comments
Sea Center Texas (SCT) recently greeted its millionth visitor, Jacob Thomas, a seven year old of Houston, reported Texas Parks and Wildlife. The surprised youngster received several prizes including a lifetime fishing license donated by The Dow Chemical Company, a lifetime membership to the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA), a customized rod and reel donated by John Regnier, and other gifts donated by the Brazosport Convention & Visitors Council and Sea Center Texas. Sea Center Texas was established through a partnership with The Dow Chemical Company, the Coastal Conservation Association, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. SCT opened its marine aquarium and education center in March 1996 and the fish hatchery produced its first juvenile fish to stock in public waters in June 1997. Aerial view of hatchery The facility is operated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and admission is free. In addition to TPWD staff, more than 100 volunteers conduct tours, interact with guests at the “touch” tank, greet visitors, and serve as cashiers in the gift shop. Guests to SCT are treated to one of the best native marine fish displays in Texas. The center offers a variety of educational programs that promote the wise use and conservation of Texas’ marine resources. The center’s wetland area is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Over 150 species of birds have been identified at the site. The wetland consists of a one-acre salt marsh... Read more
RVers guide to slashing campground expenses
October 8, 2010 by Bob Difley · 14 Comments
By Bob Difley Unless you’ve been out in the boonies for several months, way beyond the reach of a radio signal, you know that the recession is not quite over. Joblessness is still somewhere near the top of Mt. Whitney, services have been cut to the non-existent, and a nervous populace is burying money under the mattress rather than spending it. OK. So (1) How can we RVers work the current economic situation to our advantage, and (2) How can we save more and spend less until this mess is over? A look at how RV park and campground managers think and function and how they act in response to their supervisors putting the handcuffs on all spending might cast some light on how to turn their apparent inability to get things done (can’t buy supplies or parts, staff cuts reduce amount of labor available, can’t work the employees overtime, can’t pay outside contractors, etc.) into our personal opportunity. As you travel around, tune in to the campgrounds and RV parks that you stay in–not to what you like about them, but what isn’t getting done. You will undoubtedly discover litter that needs to be picked up, grass to be mowed, brush to clear, trails to be maintained, weeds to pull, office files needing to be organized, an empty host position not filled, needed repairs to infrastructure (plumbing leaks, door hinge broken, sprinklers not working, painting restrooms and office), and much more. You are likely to find these lapses more at government run... Read more
Excellent Value in St. Louis – Great Casino for Non-Gamblers
October 7, 2010 by Mac McClellan · 6 Comments
Our Midwest casino tour continues! In my last post I told you about stopping overnight at Harrah’s in North Kansas City, MO. For our next stop we wanted an RV park with hookups, and we wanted to visit St. Louis for a few days. We had never been to Casino Queen but knew they had an RV park that was chosen by readers of Midwest Gaming & Travel magazine as one of the best casino RV parks in the Midwest. That plus the convenient location made them an easy choice, so we made a reservation for 3 nights. A Great Casino for Non-Gamblers I’ll have to split this story into two parts because it’s too long! Casino Queen is a great choice for both gamblers, and non-gamblers alike. This week I’ll talk to you non-gamblers, and next week more details for the players. Many are surprised when they hear about non-gamblers being casino campers, but when you consider the whole situation it becomes clear that casinos often give you a great value. Casino Queen is a prime example, and here’s why in a nutshell; location, low cost, convenience, dining options. Location Casino Queen RV Park is located in East St. Louis, IL with a great view of the arch and downtown St. Louis. The only negative (which is a problem in any large city) was getting there in a 40’ motorhome with a toad and being led by a Garmin Nuvi that thought we were driving a Honda Civic! But that’s another story. Do take time to look at your route in advance to avoid areas where large vehicles shouldn’t... Read more
A Lifestyle of Change
October 6, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 27 Comments
By the Never-Bored RVers When the flash of bright light hit us telling us that we were meant to become RVers, we knew next to nothing about recreational vehicles or an on-the-road lifestyle. It was, as the Classical Romans call it, a “tabla rasa,” a blank page ready to be written upon. We did have lots of experience as tent campers, and we knew that we always looked forward to our next weekend get-away. Yet, our new direction was filled with mysteries and unknown expectations. I’ll talk a little bit about the philosophy of being full-timers, but first, I think there may be a nugget or two of wisdom in talking about a few of the changes that we have made since first starting out in a recreational vehicle. 1) Most obvious is our rig. We took off in a 22-foot lightweight travel trailer, which we loved and actually met our needs, but after a year of jostling, it became a repair-project-in-progress, so we researched and bought a 28-foot all-season model with a slide. We feel it was an excellent choice for durability, comfort and we can still get into small campgrounds.. We pulled our first trailer with a Nissan Xtera. – but only twice. After that, we realized we needed something much beefier, so we upgraded to a three-quarter ton diesel. Sadly, we were forced to sell our Prius, because it is not designed to sit around waiting for our traveling days to end. And now for the lifestyle changes: 2) Our pattern of staying one or...
