Excellent Value in St. Louis – Part II

October 18, 2010 by Mac McClellan · 1 Comment

Last time I talked about our visit to Casino Queen (CQ) in St. Louis and how it’s a great place for non-gamblers because of the RV park (closed until May), low cost rooms, convenient location, shuttle service, and multiple good dining options.  If you’re a gambler you’ll appreciate all that as well, plus you’ll also like the gaming, comps and promotions. The Gaming For most people gambling is entertainment and in the long run the house wins.  What makes the difference is how much value you get from your entertainment budget.  Some places offer tight games that return a lower percentage.  You’ll usually find these conditions in casinos that have no local competition.  They take your money fast because they can — people will still play there because they don’t have any choices other than not playing.  Casino Queen is on the other end of the spectrum.  They have three major competitors in the St. Louis market and have decided to compete based on value.  In my opinion they’re succeeding! RV Poll Results (3rd Installment)

October 18, 2010 by Mark Polk · 4 Comments

It has been a while since I posted some of our weekly RV poll results. It’s always interesting and fun to look back at some of our past RV polls to see how folks responded to the questions. Keep in mind that the outcome of any poll depends on several factors like; what type of poll it is, how the questions are worded, who is asking the questions and of course who does and does not participate in the poll. Our weekly RV poll is not a scientific poll, a political poll or a marketing poll. It is basically used to give me some idea of what our newsletter readers are interested in, how they use their RVs, and of course just for fun. Here are the latest RV poll results: Poll Question: Do you use the shower at the campground bath-house more than the shower in your RV? Poll Response: 41% answered yes and 59% answered no. Poll Question: Do you RV during the fall and winter months? Poll Response: 84% do and 16% do not. Poll Question: Do you winterize your RV, or do you have an RV dealer winterize it for you? Poll Response: 88% winterize their own RV and 12% do not. Poll Question: Do you take bottled water with you when RVing, or do you filter your drinking water? Poll Response: 32% take bottled water, 15% filter their water and 53% do both. Poll Question: Do you store your RV on your property or at a storage facility? Poll Response: 70% store it on their property and 30% store it at a storage facility. Poll Question: Do you RV with pets? Poll Response: 91% do and 9% do not. Poll Question:... Read more

Snowbirds flock south for the winter

October 16, 2010 by Rex Vogel · 3 Comments

As Neil Young once sang, “the summer ends and the winter winds begin to holler all around the bend…” Numerous varieties of fresh citrus is available in Florida, South Texas, Arizona, and Southern California. © Rex Vogel, all rights reserved The cooler temperatures have many of us thinking about the coming winter and the joys of dealing with snow, ice, bone-chilling cold, and heating bills that challenge the national debt. You’re familiar with the drill: dig out the snow shovel, take the snow blower on a test run, and pull out the warm winter sweaters, parkas, mitts, and snow boots. Such are the joys of another Northern winter! Most, if not all, of Canada and a considerable portion of the United States are situated north of the “winter comfort line.” I don’t know the location of that line, and it would vary from person to person, but too many of us endure cold and snowy winters rather than basking in warmer climes. The entire history of the human race is largely a search for comfort. Warm southern winters certainly rate high on my comfort scale. Listen! Can you hear the flapping wings, quacks, honks, and eerie cackles of thousands of our avian friends preparing to “vee” south for the winter season? The solution is to follow the migrating birds. Like Canada Geese, RVing Snowbirds know which way to fly when the mercury takes its annual plunge. Does the idea sound good? As you might expect, the U.S. Sunbelt is the most popular Snowbird destination. A common... Read more

Gr8LakesCamper: Recap of the Fall Detroit RV Show

October 15, 2010 by Gr8LakesCamper · 6 Comments

By all accounts, the recent Fall Detroit Camper & RV Show was a huge success. From day one, when people waited 90 minutes for the show to officially open its doors, to day five, when it was shoulder-to-shoulder people enjoying bumper-to-bumper RVs, the show was a good one — and certainly the best in the last few years. I went to the show for four of its five days and tried to talk to as many people as I could. I also tried to get inside as many RVs as I could. What follows is my recap. (You can also read my individual reports from Day One, Day Two, Day Three, Day Four and Day Five. All but Day Five includes a video.) The RV dealers I talked to said they sold a lot of campers, or at least made some good leads for future sales. Bill Sheffer, Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Recreation Vehicles and Campgrounds (MARVAC), said across the state RV sales are up 16 percent over the previous year. “Show attendance was up 20 percent over the 2009 numbers,” Sheffer said. “Dealers and exhibitors reported positive sales numbers and responses from those in attendance, and several $200,000 units were even sold during the show. Many dealers reported meeting and/or exceeding sales goals for the duration of the show.” Vendors said people were very receptive to what they were offering, including Rick Stafford of River Ridge RV Resort. On the first day he was somewhat lukewarm about the show, but by the fifth day he was extremely pleased. He said three couples... Read more

And taking the Checkered Flag………..

October 14, 2010 by Larry Cad · 13 Comments

Number One   Several years ago, early in our experience with RVs, we were at the Spartan factory for service on our Coachmen motorhome.  During that visit, we were fortunate to become acquainted with a couple there who were in their seventh year of full time living in their motorhome.  We went to breakfast with these folks and spent a long time listening to their adventures as full timers.  When we returned to the service shop, they were kind enough to give us a tour of their motorhome, explaining various features of the coach that fit into the full time life style.  Their motorhome was a Newmar Dutchstar, and from that day, I have always believed that the Dutchstar was a great coach for full timers, perhaps more so than any other make or model of motorhome.  Therefore, it was interesting to me that, when I conducted my recent survey of diesel motorhomes, that the Newmar Dutchstar finished in first place.  This would not have been my initial prediction, but looking at it with 20-20 hindsight, it all makes sense to me.  First of all, Newmar makes a great motorhome, a fact that will be confirmed by many Newmar owners.  Second, the Dutchstar is a great motorhome, with many fine features, quality construction, and solid factory support.  What I found to be unusual, was that the Dutchstar met so many of my specific requirements, at least enough to finish in the top spot in this list.  Actually, the Dutchstar finished only slightly ahead of the Winnebago Tour in points and... Read more
