Earlier I wrote about the adaption of using an Apple iPad in an RV for its application of a glass dash. If you missed it here’s a link In addition to using this for instrumentation and of course navigation, there are other great features that RVer’s might find of interest. There are times when we are exposed to harsh or adverse weather conditions from heavy rain, snow threats or even tornado activity. In many cases our only window to the weather is what we can see while speeding along the highway. Well, there is a way that we can really know what’s ahead, 5 miles, 50 or hundreds. We are talking about weather radar. A clear and easy way to view precipitation throughout the country, all in real time less, 10 minutes. This is a great iPad app (Application) that lends itself well to the RV traveller, and it is just one of what may be many. The one-time cost of this application is $1.99. This application requires WiFi to retrieve. Travelling with large class A coaches or RV tow combinations can present... Read more

Gr8LakesCamper: Crazy people have crazy dreams
September 27, 2010 by Gr8LakesCamper · 17 Comments
This post is just for fun. I had a weird dream about our camper the other night. At the risk of subjecting myself to wacko theories from all kinds of amateur psychoanalysts, I’m going to tell you about it. In my dream, I was a passenger in the truck owned by a friend of my Uncle Ed. His name is Joe, and his F150 is one of those vehicles that was built to tow things. Big things. Heavy things. Like his big and heavy travel trailer. But in my dream he’s pulling my small, lightweight camper. Uncle Ed is in the truck, too. So we’re in Joe’s truck, he’s pulling my camper and we’re going fast. He goes fast over a set of three railroad tracks. These tracks are surrounded by woods. A few hundreds yards or so we go down a very steep hill and I hear the camper bottom out behind us. From the back seat of Joe’s quad cab truck, I turn around and see that the camper became separated from the truck. So, I yell for him to stop. Which he does. We drive back to the camper, and as we’re getting closer I notice the only thing left of it is the floor. Nothing but the floor, the frame and the wheels. The floorboards were wood planks that looked like the floor of an old boat, and it was stripped clean of everything on top of it. Not being stupid — remember, I’m dreaming — we decide to back track and find the rest of my camper. Of course, we find it back at the railroad tracks. Well, we find the pile of it anyways. But what was weird — weirder... Read more

Membership camping: Be an informed consumer
September 26, 2010 by Rex Vogel · 24 Comments
Jack and Mildred Kidwell, a Reynoldsburg, Ohio, couple told Columbus NBC-4i.com they’ve paid more than $20,000 over the past 25 years for a campground membership. When they stopped paying their yearly membership dues two years ago, creditors started calling. In 1985, Jack and Mildred Kidwell were in their late 40s when they bought a Thousand Trails camping membership. Since then, they have paid thousands of dollars in finance charges and membership dues. Kidwell indicated that the couple tried to sell or cancel the membership, but the company refused. In 2001, Kidwell said, his annual dues rose from $272 to $500 and in the last two years, he and Mildred decided to stop paying and the creditors are calling. “It is just a thing, there is no end to it,” said Kidwell. “I just want them off my back and to quit trying to bill me for more money.” “In this particular contract there is no right of rescission, that’s an important element to look for in any contract,” said Joan Coughlin, Spokesperson for the Central Ohio Better Business Bureau. Right of Rescission is language that allows the buyer with notice, to terminate a contract. “This particular company has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau, so it’s got a bad track record already,” said Coughlin. The next step for the Kidwells is to contact the Ohio Attorney General’s Office to file a complaint. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides consumers with the... Read more
Recycle gray water? You can’t be serious
September 24, 2010 by Bob Difley · 7 Comments
By Bob Difley Most of us boondockers are able to stock enough peanut butter, fruit of the vine, double-A batteries, and the other essentials allowing us to spend great blocks of time in the hinterlands well beyond shouting distance from the nearest hookups. But we are still limited, unfortunately, by depleted fresh water stores and full waste tanks. But I recently talked with Greg Corwin (USI-RV), who has developed a couple of systems that will greatly extend the number of days we can boondock or dry camp before having to stow our stuff and head to the dump and water fill station. Following is my interview with him on how these systems work: BOB: Your system of recycling gray water to flush the toilet is fascinating, since filling the gray water tank is often the time limiting factor in dry-camping and boondocking. GREG: The approach takes your gray water (typically shower and sink water), filters it, pressurizes it, then uses it to flush your toilet thereby saving fresh water and removing water from your gray tank. The end result is each toilet flush empties your gray tank a little leaving more space for showers. Our system has special valves that provide fresh water to the toilet when no grey water exists, like right after you dump at a dump station. BOB: I can see how that would be a big advantage to dry-campers trying to extend their stay as long as possible. But what about the filter, how often does it have to be changed or cleaned? GREG: After extensive field trials we... Read more

Tips on choosing an RV dealer
September 23, 2010 by Rex Vogel · 21 Comments
Would you purchase a recreational vehicle from any RV dealer? Does the dealer make a difference? You bet it does! Not all dealers are reputable or have good customer service records. Ardell Brown RV Camping World, Draper, Utah. Photo courtesy KSL Choosing the right RV dealer is important both at the time of sale and later down the road when you have your RV serviced or repaired. Following are seven things to look for when choosing an RV dealer: 1. Customer service Unfortunately, a common complaint in the industry is that RV dealers are more interested in selling you a product than keeping it serviced after the sale. Finding an RV dealer with a proven track-record of customer service is of utmost importance. When you spend thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars on an RV you want to ensure before the sale that the dealer will provide outstanding customer service. After your RV breaks down is not the time to learn that the dealer is more interested in your money and getting you off the lot than providing quality service. One way of determining an RV dealers value is by finding out if they’ve received any manufacturers’ customer service awards. Do your homework before the sale and choose an RV dealer with a proven track record for quality service. 2. Dealer’s history Secondly, taking time to research the background and history of the RV dealer could save you money and heart-aches in the long run. The longer the RV dealer has been around, better! If a dealer has... Read more
