If there is one phrase I advocate it would be “you get what you pay for”. This phrase always holds true, regardless of what you are purchasing. If you are going to buy a product intended to perform a specific job it only makes sense to pay a little extra and get one that does the job flawlessly. Read more Read More →

August 8, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 13 Comments
This is the 29th article in a continuing series about our trip through Canada to Alaska We have said our fond farewells to 58-day caravan buddies and returned to our lives as full-time solo RVers. While members of our group continued eastward or southward from Smithers, British Columbia, Monique and I drove directly west to the nearest ocean, where we found a perfect dry camp site in Prudhomme Lake Provincial Park near the port city of Prince Rupert. After a hectic trip, we squeezed into a rustic campsite in Prudhomme Lake Provincial Park in British Columbia We have had an incredible adventure over the past two months. Wish you could have been with us … but, many of you have said you felt like you were. Now it’s time to get down to business. In the next edition, we’ll talk about our expenses, but today let’s talk about whether signing up for a caravan is the right choice for you. Read more Read More →

One Tank Trip for Nebraska Camping
August 8, 2010 by Woodall's · 3 Comments
This One Tank Trip seen in the Woodall’s 2010 North American Campground Directory. If you’re looking to spend some quality time enjoying the great outdoors, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better place for that than Nebraska. The Cornhusker State is chock full of broad expanses of plains and rolling hills, which remain largely unspoiled since the times of Lewis and Clark. In fact, if you’re feeling like a trailblazer, you can retrace the steps of these master explorers along the Lewis and Clark route. But this isn’t meant to suggest that Nebraska is mired in the old days and the old ways; far from it. This is a state firmly secured in the present, as well as the past, which you’ll soon discover when you explore Nebraska’s busy metropolitan regions. Before we head out into nature, let’s start this one tank trip off in Nebraska’s largest city, Omaha. This is where you’ll find the Strategic Air and Space Museum, with exhibits that give us a firsthand look at some of the military aircraft from WWII to the present that served us so well. You’ll see the Fortress series of bombers, various fighter craft, and the recently retired SR-71 Blackbird spy plane, which was capable of achieving such high altitudes that the pilots had to wear space suits. Among the permanent exhibits, you’ll see the Vietnam Memorial Wall and an inspiring memorial dedicated to Jimmy Doolittle’s Tokyo Raiders of World War II. This museum is a definite must-see for any aficionado of... Read more
Our Alaska Trip Part XXVIII-B Useful Definitions Part B
August 7, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 12 Comments
This is the second installment in the 28th article in a continuing series about our trip through Canada to Alaska In yesterday’s edition, you learned that “Arctic Haze” is not a soul singer and “Chickaloon” is an insignificant village. Here are some more definitions to guide you through your trip to the Canadian Northwest and Alaska: Interior: All of the center part of Alaska above and east of Fairbanks. When you think of the remote, icy tundra and wilderness of Alaska, you are mostly thinking of the Interior. In coastal and populated areas of the state (that is, not the Interior), you can buy bread and milk at affordable prices. Lateral Moraine: Rocks and debris pushed aside by glaciers during the many Ice Ages, which ran from about 11,000 to 3,000 years ago, and probably earlier. There are also terminal moraines and others you’ll learn about as you travel the glacial regions. Bear Glacier on the Glacier Highway. Moraines are the rocks & debris in front of and on the sides of glaciers. Loony: A $1 coin, and a tooney is a $2 coin. Folding money begins at $5. Most other Canadian coins are easily confused with U.S. coins. Lower 48: The rest of the United States. Mukluks: High boots designed and insulated for arctic wear, mostly made by natives from animal skins and fir. Muskeg: Mushy land through which the U.S. Army slogged to build the Alaskan (Alcan) Highway. Muskox: Very weird-looking creatures in the sheep family that... Read more

Will you be a traffic ticket victim?
August 6, 2010 by Bob Difley · 32 Comments
By Bob Difley I’ve received a couple emails from Rvers who have pulled into Utah rest stops and stayed overnight finding a ticket in excess of $400 on their windshield. Is this just in Utah, or is it happening in other states as well? I have no real evidence, but if any of you have any first hand experience with receiving tickets while sleeping in rest stops, please add your comments below. With funds drying up and states desperate for money, is it possible that they are reaching for income wherever they can find it? If so, it would be good to alert RVers out there on the road. One source said that truckers were not being ticketed nor are people sleeping in cars. So do authorities feel that rich RVers with those big motorhomes and fifth wheels won’t complain, or put up a stink about getting a ticket–and probably aren’t even voters in that state anyway. And if it is true, and we don’t react or try to do something about being singled out for ransom, than we deserve to be the hapless victims of extortion. Another RVer emailed me that he has run into several people that supposedly have lost their jobs and homes and are squatting out on public lands. I can understand their dilemma, and don’t begrudge them trying to survive. However, this RVer also said that one of them had thrown trash all over the campsite and was dumping his tanks right out on the ground. He took a video–which included their license plate and turned it over to a Ranger.... Read more
One Tank Trip for Minnesota Camping
This One Tank Trip seen in the Woodall’s 2010 North American Campground Directory. For this route, we’re taking a bit of a departure from our usual one tank trip format. Normally, we feature a journey with multiple stops in various towns. This time out, we’re showcasing the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway in Minneapolis, which is a 50-mile looping stretch of road that takes you on a fascinating trip through seven distinct regions around the Minneapolis area. You’ll find that this Minnesota camping route takes you through both urban and rural areas, with lots of things to see and do and plenty of places to pull over and enjoy the great outdoors. So, let’s get out on the road and see what’s out there waiting for us! Every trip has to start somewhere, so let’s make Boom Island the point of origin. It’s located in the Downtown Riverfront section of the Byway, at roughly the two o’clock position on the map. You’ll find this 20-plus acres area to be filled with opportunities to relax and grab some sunshine, including a walkway around the river’s edge, boat docks, and several picnic areas to enjoy a spot of lunch. The Downtown Riverfront area rests adjacent to the Mississippi River, so you’ll get a great view of the lock and dam, as well as the surrounding area, from the Stone Arch Bridge. Getting out on the Byway, take a clockwise course a few miles south to your next stop, which offers you a chance to enjoy the Mississippi River up close and personal. From the... Read more
