Our Alaska Trip Part XX Even Farther Northward

July 13, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 5 Comments

This is the 20th in a continuing series about our trip to Alaska  In case I didn’t mention it lately, the rumors are true,. Alaska is a beautiful state.  Tuesday morning we left Anchorage in a light rain … destination:  Seward on the Kenai Peninsula (pronounced “Keen-Eye, equal stress on the syllables).  After leaving Alaska’s largest city, we found ourselves driving on another postcard-quality road, the Seward Highway South.  On our left were steep forested mountains featuring numerous glaciers at various elevations.  At one point, a glacier sat just above a lagoon, actually at sea-level.   How do we know it was sea level?  Because on our right was a fjord, apparently in the Turnagain Arm of Prince William Sound.  Absolutely stunning, even in the dismal weather that followed us for our entire route today.  When we drove along the shore, the water was high, but the fjord is known for having the third largest “bore tide” in the world, a change of 28 feet. And now to today’s theme (one of the three I mentioned in Part XIX:  Even Farther Northward).  A feature of our caravan provides opportunities to enjoy unscripted side trips, like the one that Ivan and Shirley Yurtin took to Port Barrow on the Arctic Ocean.  Since only a small percentage of Alaskan travelers have or will endure that journey, I’m excerpting parts of their journal for you.   Ivan and Shirley’s Story  As we approached Point Barrow from the air, we first noticed that the lakes were... Read more

Brian Brawdy Show to Launch at The Rally

July 13, 2010 by Brian Brawdy · 4 Comments

Little more than a week away, The Rally is fast approaching. I’m heading towards Louisville next Monday to set the SRMR in position for one of the biggest shows in my RV’ing year. The Self Reliant Mobile Residence is my “Just In Case Place.” When “IT” hits, tornado or terrorist attack, man-made or those disasters wrought by Mother Nature the rig is ready to go and stay gone. I designed the SRMR to be fully functional while “Off The Grid” be it boondocking or bugging out, sojourning or surviving. In addition, the Self-Reliant Mobile Residence is a full radio/tv production studio. I have chosen one of my favorite events, The Rally, to launch the Brian Brawdy Show. RVers are the quintessential “off the grid gang” and epitomize the nomadic, self-reliant mindset that will be the focus of my show. With thought provoking attitude about the news of the day, special guests interviews and discussions, the show will focus on surviving and thriving in a century where political, economic, environmental and meteorological challenges face us all. We will be streaming live from the main entrance of the Expo Center daily so stop by and give me your feedback. Please join me at The Rally or in the meantime @brianbrawdy.com Join Brian on Facebook Follow Brian on Twitter  Read More →

One Tank Trip for North British Columbia Camping

July 13, 2010 by Woodall's · 2 Comments

This One Tank Trip seen in the Woodall’s 2010 North American Campground Directory. Feeling adventurous? Do you want to visit the days of the Gold Rush and the wild frontier? Come to the northern range of BC and you’ll be able to do exactly that, and then some. This northern British Columbia camping area looks much as it did in the days of the earliest settlers; rugged and untamed. Don’t worry about the absence of modern conveniences, though. You’ll still be able to maintain a foothold on the present while immersing yourself in the adventures of the past. In fact, the one tank trips route we’re showing you runs along the northern half of the gold rush route of the 1860s, along the Fraser River. So prepare yourself and set out for your north B.C. experience. Williams Lake serves as a perfect lead-in for our one tank trip, as it’s a frontier town with an emphasis on cowboys and the rodeo. It’s a town with great pride in its heritage, as evidence by the rough and rugged events it hosts throughout the year. Chief among them is the Williams Lake Stampede, an annual four day rodeo held the first week in July, with a multitude of events such as bull riding, roping, bareback riding, barrel racing, and steer wrestling. Thousands of spectators make this their annual destination, and also enjoy chili cook-offs, musical entertainment, and dancing. In this area, the camping and fishing enthusiast will have plenty of places to pick from when it comes to private spots to set... Read more

Our Alaska Trip Part XIX Stalling for Time

July 12, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 13 Comments

This is the 19th in a continuing series about our trip to Alaska “I’m wiping reindeer hair off my shoes,” Marvin Curb told me yesterday when I asked what he was doing at the door to his motorhome.  Now there’s something you don’t hear everyday, but in Alaska, well, a lot of unusual things happen.  On the serious side, one of the caravan members went to an Anchorage urgent care provider when a she was stung by an insect.  She was refused treatment there and at a second clinic, because they don’t take Medicare or accept secondary health insurance.  I hope we hear more about this from others who have asked for medical care in the 49th state.  To be honest, this edition of Our Alaska Trip journal is stalling for time.  I have three items that I want to put together, but the photos that go with one story were fried in a laptop, so we’re trying to resurrect them, and a member of the group that I want to talk with hasn’t been available to tell his story.   So now for some random notes and just a tad of travel log:  RVers who travel to Alaska with their dogs and who plan to embark on a 12-hour tour, as we have, need to plan ahead for pet care while they are gone.  We’ve had a dog-walking service available at one private campground and I’m sure others offer it, also.   I mentioned before there are something like 2.5 gift shops per tourist in Alaska.  Still true.  A more interesting statistic is that one of every 59 Alaskans has a pilot’s license. ... Read more

Good Sam Club RV Owners’ Council To Survey Membership Concerning RV Tire Safety Issues

July 12, 2010 by Sue Bray · 10 Comments

2010 survey to provide insight into RV tire safety, care, maintenance VENTURA, CALIF. (July 12, 2010) – The Good Sam Club, the world’s largest RV owners’ organization with nearly one million member families, announced today that the Good Sam Club RV Owners’ Advisory Council (RVOAC) has just deployed its annual survey. This year, the Council hopes to gather empirical data concerning RV tire safety. The survey was sent to approximately 250,000 randomly selected Good Sam Club members and will seek to determine the frequency of RV tire failure and RV owners’ knowledge about RV tire selection, care and maintenance. “We’ve had quite a number of members write to us to express their concern about RV tires. The failure rate of RV tires is simply not known at this point, because there is no data available to confirm or refute those concerns,” said Tom Gonser, RVOAC Chair. “Our survey will involve an extremely large sample size, and should begin to provide answers as to whether a problem with RV tires exists; and, if so, what types, sizes, and brands of RV types might be most involved. Separately, we’ll be collecting significant information pertaining to RV owners’ understanding of issues pertaining to tire safety, and to the need for owner diligence in tire care and maintenance.” Read more  Read More →

Our journey to find the perfect DP continues

July 11, 2010 by Larry Cad · 16 Comments

Now that we have pretty much explored a great number of options and features you can look at on a diesel pusher motorhome, it is time to look at a few coaches that are available on the market and see how they fill the bill as far as suitability is concerned.  When I first started this phase of this project, I was surprised at how difficult it would be.  Surprisingly, even in this bad economy, there is a good selection of new diesel motorhomes available on the market.  Depending on what you want, and how much you have to spend, the selection grows to a point where it can get overwhelming and a lot of work can go into selecting your new rolling mansion.  With prices ranging from the low $100,000 range, and up to several million, with lengths up to 45 ft., the various combinations grow exponentially.
