One Tank Trip for Washington Camping

July 16, 2010 by Woodall's · Leave a Comment

This One Tank Trip as seen in the 2010 Woodall’s North American Campground Directory. Before you head out on this journey through Washington’s picturesque landscape, make sure you’ve got everything you need for several days’ worth of camping. When you see the almost primordial tapestry that nature has woven, you’ll understand why Washington’s nickname is the Evergreen State. Your route will take you through miles and miles of unspoiled wilderness, and within a stone’s throw of volcano country. Washington State is truly a paradise for the outdoors person. Starting off this one tank trip in the big city of Tacoma, you can enjoy a taste of metropolitan life before you head out for the back territories. The Freighthouse Square Public Market was once a railway station before being converted into a collection of shops and eating establishments. It’s also the home of an eclectic array of arts and crafts that have been handmade by local artisans. Go searching for that “must-have” item down in Antique Row, or look in on a host of animal species to be found at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. As you leave Tacoma by way of the eastbound Highway 410, your voyage through Washington’s gorgeous countryside officially begins. Eighteen miles away from Tacoma, you’ll come to Greenwater, which is a fine place to pull over and stretch your legs with a hike along the Sourdough Ridge Trail. This trail is a fairly easy climb, and takes you to the top of a ridge where... Read more

Our Alaska Trip Part XXI 2 Days of Snapshots

July 16, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 3 Comments

This is the 21st in a continuing series about our trip through Canada to Alaska  There are all kinds of ways of to enjoy your trip through Canada and into Alaska, much of it governed by finances and time constraints.  By being part of a caravan that includes excursions of all sorts, we have seen things we would have never signed up for if we thought about cost.  Those excursions were paid for as part of the charge to join the group. And, when it’s a free day, like today, we see other sights of wonder.  Yesterday at Seward, we first visited the Alaska SeaLife Center and then we boarded the Star of the Northwest tour boat for a cruise around Resurrection Bay.  Here are a few photos from those two caravan-scheduled trips. Visiting Sea Lions at the Alaska SeaLife Center Sea LionKing, left, and Eaglet on the Rocks                 According to the skipper of our boat, the sighting of the whale was fortunate, but the performance put on by the humpback whale was a first for him.  At the beginning, the whale showed his back above the bay and then went under for a few minutes.  All of a sudden, he came up out of the water (breaching) and fell back.  One pectoral fin above the waves, then another, back and forth, waving to us.  Then another few breaches, a few shows of his tail (flukes), and he was gone.  But wait … he resurfaced and bid us goodbye with a wave of his fin.  Monique, who has been to Hawaii several times, where seeing whales is a normal daily event,... Read more

What Does Your RV Instrument Cluster Tell You?

July 15, 2010 by Lug_Nut · 33 Comments

As Lug_Nut sees it.   Most automobiles need only three instruments, a speedometer, a voltage meter and a fuel gauge.  The rest can be handled by warning lights, also referred to as “Idiot Lights.”  Even tachometers have little actual application in most family cars, SUV’s and trucks.  Yet the majority of these vehicles have a host of gauges, speedo, tach, oil pressure, engine temperature, voltage, fuel, etc.  But what about motorized RV’s and RV tow vehicles?  Do they also have the market driven instrument overkill?  Probably not. Many RV owners would like a dash that looks like it was taken from a Boeing 747.  Mostly a guy thing I think.  But, the gauge readouts required by most RV’s and tow vehicles are far greater than that of a passenger auto.  Let’s look at what those readouts need to provide. Speedometer – Well, that goes with out saying.  Without one, you may have to pay many speeding fines.  In addition, the speedo in this application may also be used to synchronize shift points for deceleration and compression brake engagement.  For the cost of motorized RV’s today, I don’t know why they do not come with switchable mile/km units like found on some autos.  These are analogue gauges that recalibrate from one to another at the push of a button.  Tachometer – Monitoring engine speed is critical to maintain adequate engine cooling while climbing a grade or operating within a desired torque band.  It is also required to properly... Read more

Gr8LakesCamper: Casting Call for RV Show on HGTV

July 15, 2010 by Gr8LakesCamper · 1 Comment

I’m posting the following release as a “public service announcement” for all RVers who entertain dreams of being a Hollywood celebrity… Nancy Glass Productions, a television production company in Philadelphia, is seeking couples and families to appear in an HGTV Special being shot at the Pennsylvania RV Show in Hershey, September 16th-18th 2010. Those chosen will be followed around the show as they “shop” for RVs. Each family will be filmed over the course of a single day as they look at vehicles, try out new features, and talk to the camera about their experiences. The idea is to give viewers a consumer perspective on the RVs rather than just one of a salesperson We are looking for three families of all shapes and sizes to feature. They need not have children. A fun and outgoing personality is the most important trait, however, having an interest in and a little knowledge of the RV world doesn’t hurt either. Also, we are looking for one more “expert” family or couple who does really have experience in the RV world. An important side note, the folks we feature don’t actually have to be in the market to buy, just act like they are. Interested parties should email photos and a brief description of themselves and their family to bmakatche@nancyglassproductions.com You can check out HGTV’s 2010 RV show from earlier this year by clicking here. One Tank Trip for South British Columbia Camping

July 14, 2010 by Woodall's · 1 Comment

This One Tank Trip as seen in the 2010 Woodall’s North American Campground Directory. Starting off in Vancouver, one of the first things you notice about the city is how clean it is. In fact, it’s rated as one of the cleanest cities in North America. Even though it’s a major metropolitan area, the air is surprisingly clear. The streets are swept and the buses and trolleys are graffiti-free. You’ll find a coffee shop on virtually every corner, and there’s always a poetry reading or live music going on somewhere. Take a walk through Stanley Park, which sprawls over several acres and allows you to lose yourself among the trees as you follow the winding trails. Be on the lookout for the dark brown ground squirrels, which are only too happy to block your way and demand food for allowing you to pass through their turf. The aquarium at Stanley Park features many exhibits of fresh and salt water fish, some of which are rare or endangered. Traverse further through the park and you’ll find yourself transported to the Amazon rain forest and will come face-to-face with several types of wildlife from that region, including the dreaded anaconda. Up in North Vancouver, you can traverse the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which is touted as being the number one tourist attraction in Vancouver. The swaying boards take you across a 200-foot chasm that provides you with a world-class view, and the surrounding park is filled with restaurants, shops, and activities guaranteed to make this... Read more

Thank Goodness for the Little Man, By Professor95

July 14, 2010 by Woodall's · 4 Comments

If you are a fan of Country Music, no doubt you have heard the song Little Man by Alan Jackson.  It tells a story that is painfully true of changes, especially those effecting small towns that have experienced the inclusion of one or more of the big box chain stores.  In many American small town localities the little specialty stores that served the public for decades have shuttered their doors and are gone – unable to compete on a cost-per-item basis with the massive buying power of these huge retailers. In my own home town of Mechanicsville, VA, I was distressed when our local hardware store closed within a year after the opening of our Home Depot.  The little hardware store carried a variety of items that the big box stores don’t, and if the hardware store did not have something you needed – they would find it for you. One of the more exciting things about our RV trips to Emerald Isle is the opportunity to visit Ace Sound Hardware.  Honest – I’m not kidding!  This hardware store to me is like a candy store is to a kid. Sound Hardware was here when we started coming to Emerald Isle in 1985.  It has continued to serve both the seasonal and full-time residents of this southern barrier island for over 4 decades.  Inside you will find hardware items that can make a mechanical junkie or home repair guy’s heart beat increase to near cardio levels from just the excitement of looking at all of the items that you cannot find anywhere else. About... Read more
