Rest Assured with a Tire Minder TPMS

July 20, 2010 by Mark Polk · 18 Comments

For everyone who contacted me asking why I haven’t posted to the blog for the last month or so thank you for your concern. We just returned from a 7,200 mile coast to coast RV trip. My youngest son said I always work when we travel in the RV so I promised him I wouldn’t work on this trip. We had a wonderful time and saw lots of this beautiful country along the way. I can’t wait to start planning the next trip. Prior to leaving on the trip I was really concerned about tires. I think most people have heard stories about an RV that had a tire blowout at one time or another. If the person experiencing the blowout is lucky it will result in little damage and no one will be hurt. Read more  Read More →

One Tank Trip for Alberta Camping

July 20, 2010 by Woodall's · Leave a Comment

This One Tank Trip as seen in the 2010 Woodall’s North American Campground Directory. Taking a trip through Alberta is like finding yourself in the middle of a classic piece of artwork. Everywhere you look, you see such awe-inspiring beauty that it almost seems too perfect to be real. The province provides the traveler with snowy mountain ranges, glassy lake and rivers, deep blue skies, and adventure around every bend in the road. A choice spot in Canada is Alberta camping. Using Crowsnest Pass as the starting point, let’s have a look around before we set out on this one tank trip. After you’ve set up the rig, head over to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, which is a fascinating facility that showcases various events and contributions from the region. Highlights include an examination of early coal mining, as well as the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the 1903 Frank Slide, an avalanche and rockslide for which this center was named. Another spot of interest in Crowsnest Pass is the Leitch Collieries Provincial Historic Site, which takes you into the nitty-gritty of the Canadian coal mining trade, during the late 19th century. You can tour through the notable buildings, such as the powerhouse and managers residence, while the various displays paint a detailed picture of one of the largest mining operations in all of Canada. Heading east on Highway 3, a cruise through 60 miles of ruggedly beautiful countryside brings you to Fort Macleod, a town that’s... Read more

Our Alaska Trip Part XXIII More Travel Observations

July 19, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 5 Comments

This is the 23rd in a continuing series about our trip through Canada to Alaska  Let’s start with a Top of the World Highway update from the Yukon Highways and Public Works site:  Highway 9, the Top of the World Highway, motorists are advised that the Taylor [Top of the World] Highway in Alaska is now open from the Yukon/Alaska border through to Tok. There will be a pilot car operating from roughly MP 81 to MP 91. Expect delays. There is no camping or stopping on the Taylor Highway between Chicken, MP 67 and the Boundry/Taylor Wye, MP 95, except in designated BLM campgrounds.  Rv.net reader Dave had mentioned that he was expecting to get through Sunday following a pilot car.  Since WiFi in the area is intermittent, we can assume he hasn’t been able to report further.  However, he did email to say, “The Taylor and Top of the World Highways are now open, with a pilot car escort through the bad sections. Come to Chicken and Eagle Alaska. They need the business!”  In normal times, I check facts and spelling fastidiously.  That’s difficult on this trip, so if you see errors that need correcting, please use the comment section to get the correct information out to readers.    From the “Small World Department” of the RV blog come these two coincidences from recent days.  While in Anchorage we visited the Alaskan Heritage Center, which is an excellent way to learn about the cultures of tribes and clans in the state.  In one of the replica habitats, Bob Babbitt... Read more

One Tank Trip for Idaho Camping

July 19, 2010 by Woodall's · Leave a Comment

This One Tank Trip as seen in the 2010 Woodall’s North American Campground Directory. If you’re having a hard time deciding where to go for a getaway, if you’ve got that feeling of “been there, done that, bought all the souvenirs,” then why not give Idaho a shot? Even if you have visited the Gem State before, it’s a safe bet that there’s plenty more waiting for you to explore. After all, this is Lewis and Clark country; it was practically designed with exploration in mind! So fuel up and hit the road, because there’s a wide world of vacation fun awaiting your arrival in Idaho. Starting off this one tank trip in Palisades, you’ll find yourself in a land that’s vast and largely unspoiled. While there’s plenty of metropolitan activity to be found, Idaho’s open landscape is one of the largest in the country, and boasts some of the most beautiful and diverse terrain. The Palisades Reservoir, situated near the upper end of the Snake River, is filled with trout, so why not rent a boat and see if you can catch enough to keep the freezer stocked for the rest of the trip. This area also has several hiking and walking trails, ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging. All of them offer spectacular views, and if you like to bird-watch, this is the place to do it while Idaho camping. Driving south on the US-26 for 10 miles brings you into Swan Valley, a featured destination for vacationers. Swan Valley is surrounded by no fewer than three mountain ranges, so... Read more

Our Alaska Trip Part XXII News from the Homer-front

July 18, 2010 by Barry & Monique Zander · 9 Comments

This is the 22nd in a continuing series about our trip through Canada to Alaska NEWS FLASH!!!  The Top of the World Hwy., Alaska Hwy 9, is closed for an undetermined time due to a washout.  You may know more about this than we do since the news didn’t reach us until Saturday while we were at an overlook in Homer, Alaska, when we got into a conversation with a couple planning to take the notorious route home. The official Alaskan road conditions website [http://www.511yukon.ca/#advisories] Saturday night stated:  Highway 9, the Top of the World Highway, motorists are advised that the Taylor Highway in Alaska is closed from the Yukon/Alaska border through to Chicken due to washouts. Re-opening of the highway has not been determined as water levels have not started to recede. Checking the Whitehorse News site, this quotes the article published July 13: One person is feared missing and more than two dozen travellers are stranded after heavy rain on Sunday washed out huge sections of Alaska’s Taylor Highway – some as long as 15 kilometres – between Tok and the Tetlin Junction. “It was reported a vehicle went off the road and we’ve located it in the water but what’s to come of that right now, it’s an ongoing situation,” Megan Peters, an Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman, told the Star. This morning, upwards of 20 vehicles were stranded between Mile 67 and Mile 160 of the Taylor Highway.  The artery, which links up with the Top of the World Highway, is a favourite... Read more

What do you do if you encounter a moose?

July 17, 2010 by Bob Difley · 14 Comments

The Colorado Division of Wildlife and the U.S. Forest Service describe the moose as one of Colorado’s most-charismatic animals and have designated July 31 as Grand Mesa Moose Day. Fun, games, activities, and moose viewing information, presentations about moose biology and moose history among other activities. This is the fun way to learn about one of the west’s most dangerous mammals. Last week I wrote on what to do if you run into a bear while hiking or in your campground, but even a bear will run from a moose. Read more  Read More →
