Aircraft Have the Right of Way on Alaska Roads – 1980
May 24, 2010 by Centennial Celebration Favorite RV Memory Submission · Leave a Comment
Back in 1980, we decided we wanted to see Alaska. We had a truck with a slide-in shell. We took a month off from work, and because of time, took the Alaska Ferry to Haines. The roads at that time were either dirt, mud or gravel. We purchased the “Guidepost” and it proved to be indispensable. The most interesting experience was while traveling through a desolate area, we heard an aircraft engine, slowed down, and sure enough, a plane landed in front of us. We soon learned that aircraft have the right-of-way on Alaska roads. Submitted by Donald Pilling of Newhall, CA as a part of the RV Centennial Celebration “Share Your Favorite RV Memory” contest. RVers for Life, from 1961
May 24, 2010 by Centennial Celebration Favorite RV Memory Submission · Leave a Comment
In 1961 the second summer after we were married, we went camping on a farm, on the river, with another couple. It was late August of 1961, and our son was just a couple of months old. We had a camper cover on our pick-up which I had built a bed across the front next to the cab, across the bed rails. We had a bed/crib in the back for our son. The weather was around 100 degrees and we spent the most of the time in the water. The men took their lawn chairs and went out into the riffle of the river, and set them down holding them down, until we could get sat down into them, and we then sat there with the water just below our chins, with nothing sticking out of the water but our heads, the ladies said it was an awesome sight. We have been committed campers ever since… having worn out 2 pickup trucks with campers traveling the entire USA. We have had 3 travel trailers, 2 Class C motorhomes, and now have a class A, we always tow a car behind out motorhomes. 1979 Family Vacation in a Bread Truck Conversion
May 24, 2010 by Centennial Celebration Favorite RV Memory Submission · Leave a Comment
My first RV experience occurred the year I turned 17, my parents, my six year old sister and I were traveling to Georgia to watch my nineteen year old brother graduate from Army National Guard boot-camp then continued to proceed to Florida to Disney World for a family vacation. Being able to afford a family vacation in 1979 was a rare ocurence for my family. My father borrowed from my uncle a bread truck that he had converted to a family RV camper. It slept five, with one of the beds being a combination of the driver and passenger seats with a board laid cross the seats, and a makeshift mattress. When the board was laid between the seats the bed was tilted on an angle, I was exposed to the public through the front windshield because the curtain was behind the seats. The curtain provided privacy to the back of the truck but left me exposed in the front seating area on this titled makeshift bed. In the cabinet drawers we saw these blocks of wood but could not figure out what they were for. Needless to say I spent the whole week on this tilted bed exposed to the public because due to our limited finances we slept in parking lots and on the side of the road. We had a great time in Florida and enjoyed Disney World as a family. After retuning home and speaking to my uncle and sharing our vacation I mentioned to him that we came across these blocks of wood and did not know what they were for. He grinned and we went out to the camper and when he placed the blocks of... Read more
Epic 1973 Road Trip in an “Eclectic Truck Camper”
May 24, 2010 by Centennial Celebration Favorite RV Memory Submission · Leave a Comment
In 1973 I graduated from the University of Illinois and received my commission in the United States Air Force. I had gotten orders to go to training in California, then on to Cheyenne Wyoming for Missile Launch Officer duty. The year before I had bought a used El Camino. As soon as I found out that I was moving to Wyoming – I started planning the camping and hunting I could do in the Rocky Mountains. Being a poor college student, with student loans to pay off, I could not afford many options for camping. I decided that I would build my own camper, to fit my El Camino. With cedar siding and a wood frame, it wasn’t the most luxurious, but it was up off the cold ground, and I had equipped it with a portable sink, a porta-pottie, lights, a propane stove and heater. I was ready! I had convinced my best friend from high school to drive out west with me – it would be an “epic road trip”. We wouldn’t have to pay for hotels, we had my “eclectic” truck camper! We’d see as many sights as we could see on the way, maybe duck down into Mexico, and see the California coast before we made it to Vandenberg AFB for my report date, and he flew home from there. So, we hit the road. Three quarters of the way through our trip, we were in Nevada – traveling the wonderful brand new stretch of I-80. We were enjoying the wonder of the desert night stars, and we passed a sign that stated “Freeway Ends – 1 Mile”. Shortly after... Read more
Journal of 9 Months, 44 States and Provinces Inspires Future Generations, from 1946
May 24, 2010 by Centennial Celebration Favorite RV Memory Submission · Leave a Comment
My grandparents, Lauren and Dorothy Ober, first RV trip, a 9 month journey in 1946-1947. They covered 34 states, 4 Canadian provinces, and 6 states in Mexico. Dorothy typed a daily diary with colorful descriptions of the sights they saw, the miles traveled, the # of trailers they saw on the road. She added in photos, postcards, coasters, matchbook covers, newspaper clippings, receipts, etc. The 9 month diary is 2 volumes (each 3-1/2 inches thick) and every item added to the text is numbered and referred to in the diary. She was a bookkeeper, hense the detailed account and the 33 page ledger at the end itemizing every penny they spent! An eye opener!!! 271 days on the road Total miles: 20,626 Total cost: $2,575.92 It is a wonderful look into the time. The people, farming and industry, the roads, Tourist attractions and RV parks at the time. Historically, it is interesting to me, as a nurse, the references to relatives they visited hospitalized for measles; and to Polo outbreaks in Minnesota and their inability to get ice for the trailer. ALL the ice went to the hospitals for the polio victums (infantile paralysis)! What an era gone bye, thank goodness! Her diary was an inspiration for my husband and me to get our own 5th wheel and tour the country. Like them, our first trip was also cross-country, albeit much shorter at 2 months. And we, like most everyone we met had our ‘Newby RV story’. On the 4th day out we tore a 25ft rip in our roof pullling into our spot. They... Read more
1960: A Rented 16ft. Trailer Kicks off 50 Years of RVing
May 24, 2010 by Centennial Celebration Favorite RV Memory Submission · Leave a Comment
The year is 1960. I had just returned from seminary and was serving a United Methodist Church in Keota, Iowa. My wife and I were leaving Sunday afternoon after morning services. However, the day before our leaving I fell and broke my foot. Needless to say, we were a day late in our leaving (until after a cast was applied) . We left on Monday with a rented 16 ft Aljo (our first camping experience.) My leg in a cast and my wife 3 1/2 months before the delivery of our first son. My parents decided to go with us. They slept in the small bed and the two of us (led in cast and pregnant) slept on the folddown dinnet set. We went to Lake Okoboji and enjoyed fishing. However, as we caught fish my Dad kept busy putting them on the stringer (since I was with a cast and on crutches), but did we have fun. This year marks 50 years camping. We now own a 21 ft. travel trailer. Submitted by L. Duane Churchman of the United States as a part of the RV Centennial Celebration “Share Your Favorite RV Memory” contest. 1961: RVing with 5 Kids at Morro Bay State Park

I built my first RV in 1961. It was on trailer frame. It had 1 double bed and 3 single bunks. our 5 small children slept end to end. Under the double out the back was the cooking area with a Colman stove. On one occasion while camping at Morro Bay state park after we all exited the camper a man asked if he could look inside. He could not believe we all 7 came out. Submitted by Gerald Kelly of Lake Havasu, CA as a part of the RV Centennial Celebration “Share Your Favorite RV Memory” contest.
