Many years ago, when I served in the Navy, we’d finish up a cruise and put together something called a “lessons learned” log. Mind you, we enlisted types didn’t really read it, we just showed enough interest to avoid any extra duty back in the home port. Oddly, something from that experience clung to the inner linings of my brain. If you look in my camping journal (what…you don’t have one?!?), you’ll see little notes at the end of each entry. I don’t call them “lessons learned.” I’ve called them many things, most of which cannot be repeated here, but they share a common goal: if I write down my mistakes, I won’t repeat them, or so the theory goes.
Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
- Always check to make sure you electric cord and hose will reach the appropriate outlets before unhooking, lowering the stabilizer jacks, setting up the awning, and cracking open your first beverage.
- The temperature can drop 30 degrees between southern Michigan and northern Michigan during the three hour drive on Labor Day weekend.
- An unprepared family of four will spend about $113 at Wal-mart for warmer clothes.
- While a Dodge Durango 4×4 is a great vehicle in the mud, a Dodge Durango 4×4 with a 32′ Coachmen strapped to its bumper is almost useless in the mud.
- A Hensley Arrow is great for allowing you to tow a 32′ Coachmen with a Dodge Durango, but provides little assistance for getting un-stuck from the mud.
- It costs $75 to have a tow truck pull a Dodge Durango 4×4 and 32′ Coachmen out of the mud.
- Always check to make sure the ground is as solid as it appears before attempting to turn around on it.
- You children will not keep something as fun as getting stuck in the mud a secret from their grandparents.
- A child of 8 would surrender military secrets for the mere promise of an ice-cream cone.
- Plastic tire chocks will float away.
- A 3000 watt generator in a “primitive” campground will drive a 40 year old man to thoughts of homicide right around 2am.
- If you work for Hensley, do not use your personal hitch bar to exchange with a customer needing a different offset.
- I lose one hour of travel time when I need to drive back to the office for a hitch bar so I can hook up.
- Do not wait until March to look for the potential leaks in your trailer roof. They’re not “potential” any more.
I hope this brought a smile to your face as we wait for the last of the snow to melt. That’s what you get for living in Tampa. What are your lessons learned? I can keep a secret…well, unless there’s ice-cream involved.

My most memorable lesson learned involved the crank up antenna. I did not realize that it was still up until I pulled into a do it yourself car wash a mile or so from the campground. Fortunately, it was not completely torn off. The plastic (thankfully) elevating gear was the only casualty and was replaced when we got home. I picked up a replacement gear and an alert tag (hangs from the crank up handle when antenna is down and attaches to steering wheel when antenna is up) at Camping World.
I have found that a “remove before flight” red streamer hocked on the steering wheel helps. It stays there untill my walk around is complete, Then I can “kick the tires, and light the fires”.

These camping blogs come into my e-mail box daily, and most always I enjoy reading and gathering information from this blog. I don’t always agree with what the writer says, however one must take opinions with a grain of salt and research for yourself to find out what’s best for you.
What I really don’t appreciate is an advertiser writing a article under the guise of helping people ie “Camping Journal, Lessons Learned” when in fact it is a blatant and insulting advertisement for an over weight, overpriced Hensley Hitch.
No I don’t work for another manufacture, and yes we have many thousands of towing miles under our belts. Camping with other members from a very larger RV manufacture club, I can state without a doubt that…..
1. Yes the Hensley Hitch does do what it claims to do.
2. For what it does do, you can do it with a lot less weight of this hitch.
3. You don’t have to spend this kind of money to achieve what the Hensey does.
It’s my opinion that this hitch is overrated, and it’s way to expensive at 4 times the going price of others. This hitch is also requires more maintenance than others of this type. If you purchase one you will find that it is more complicated to hitch up, more time consuming to hitch up, and increases the Combined weight of your entire rig. Please, before you spend this kind of money on any hitch, do YOUR homework and ask others who use other products such as Equal-i-zer, Eaz-Lift and Reese equalizing hitches.
I hope that you will take Hensley’s spin with a grain of salt.

I have to disagree with Gary M on the Hensley. I used one for three seasons and compared to the sway control I had previoiusly used it was truly amazing. I don’t work for Hensley and yes it costs a lot but I think it was well worth the money. I towed through conditions that would have had me in a panic had it not been for the Hensley. I would never tow a trailer now without one.
Another way to make sure you don’t drive off with the tv antenna up is to take the keys out of the ignition and hang them on the antenna crank. Pretty hard to forget if you do this.
I travel in a Class A motorhome and rarely tow anything.
Walk arounds are good, but getting down and looking under is a good idea too. NEVER leave the oil drain pan under the coach after changing oil in the generator. Especially if said generator is just forward of those big rear dual wheels. It is amazing how far 2 quarts of oil can spread under that much weight.
My best lesson learned is: While your husband is positioning your rig in an unlevel situatation, don’t, I repeat , don’t hold the levelers with your feet so they don’t slide. Keep your foot there one second too long and the result is not pleasant. God did not make feet and toes to withstand a tire that is supporting a16,000lb load. USE A STICK!

That said, I believe Lessons learned should be a regular blog. Great stuff.
Make sure to take your water heater off bypass mode before turning the hot water heater on.
We opted to not get a hot water heater on our rig, reasoning that if the water was already hot, we wouldn’t need to heat it. Instead, we just went with the regular water heater with a tank to hold both hot and cold water. LOL.
I installed the Banks Transcommand on my 1995 Pace Arrow, and, anxious to enjoy the change in performance, drove off from the house and downtown, about 6 miles one way, and pulled into a parts store. As I came out, the fellow getting out of the truck next to me, handed me the end of my shore power cable. I had towed it all the way down, and the plug blades were worn very sharp. On the way home, bought a new plug and some red velcro strips, one of which now resides on my steering wheel until the cable is unplugged, wiped off, and safely stored. The Transcommand works very well, tightening up the formerly sloppy shifting.
I like a good lessons learned article every so often as well. I have a couple… Don’t forget to remove the shampoo out of the corner shelf in the shower. Thank goodness there was no carpet in there. Make sure that you move everything out of the way when you move the slides in. You can burn out a fuse on the slide and knock if off the track with a hard camera case. Don’t forget to empty the big dog’s water dish before departing. I think the worst one we ever did was not securing the eggs – they flipped over in the door somehow and when the Mrs opened the fridge, she had scrambled eggs all over the inside, down the front and on the floor. Not a pretty sight…
We’ve learned a lot from other folks’ mistakes, so we haven’t made any monumentally stupid ones yet (knock on wood) (well, except for driving down and back up VA 8 on the east side of the Blue Ridge Parkway, but we survived). We put colored clothes pins on the driver’s sun visor to remind us to lower the antenna, pull the temperature sensor out of the outside compartment, etc. Works very well.
The end of June 2010, we got lucky, there was a cancellation at the beach on the Calif. coast. Found the spot, backed in, leveled the trailer, running down the jack to unhook the P/U. Ooops, forgot to put the parking chocks between the tires of the trailer. It only moved about 6 inches, toward the rocks and water, the wife was inside. I missed a step. She let me know about it. That happens when you get in a hurry.
Level, chocks, unhook. Ooops, not again.
