Extended Warranties. Are They Worth It?

January 14, 2010 by Lug_Nut · 12 Comments

So, what exactly is an extended warranty? It is a warranty on a portion or all of a product that starts when the original manufacturer’s warranty expires.  It, as in the original, has a term, usually stated in months.  Additionally there may be other qualifying components such as a maximum mileage or operating hours.  Like the original warranty, it covers repairs or replacements of items that fail, but excludes normal wear, abuse or failure due to lack of maintenance. Extended warranties are offered now on many consumer purchases on vehicles worth hundreds of thousands of dollars to a seven dollar electronic accessory.  There are manufacturer, dealer and independent extended warranties available.   These additional warranties, however, come with a price.  Is this extra cost worth it? Well, of course there is no simple answer to this.  While there are many variables, even the same item may support such a need for one person’s application, but not for another’s.  However, making the right choice requires more than just knowing the cost.  You have to know what the service contract includes in full detail. First, who is the company that is offering this?  Generally they would fall into one of the three categories below. Manufacturer: While this is probably the best warranty package, it is generally the most expensive.  Service is usually throughout the country using their dealer network. Dealer: Normally more price competitive, but may be limited to a single point... Read more

Cruising vs RVing, and Wi-Fi

January 12, 2010 by Chris Guld · 11 Comments

by Chris Guld, www.geeksontour.com I think there are a lot of RVers who also take cruising vacations.  Cruising is very much like RVing in that you don’t have to check in and out of a room for every destination.  You keep your stuff all in one room, yet you travel to multiple locations.  Then there’s the food.  Sure wish I could have that available when we’re RVing!  The primary reason I love RVing is the complete freedom and independence of going wherever we want to go, whenever we want to go there.  Although that does not describe cruising, I find cruising to be a nice change of pace where I don’t have any decisions to make.  We took a short, weekend cruise to the Bahamas this past weekend with the whole family.  Six of us.  It’s a great way to spend time together and be sure that everyone is comfortable. The only decision I had to make is what to eat! I was also looking forward to staying connected while we were on the cruise ship.  I could have sworn I saw, “Free Wi-Fi on board” in the promotional literature.  As it turns out, I was only half right.  There was Wi-Fi in the public areas, but it was not free.  $24/hour for Wi-Fi! An I thought $10/day was high the last time I was in a hotel!  It is amazing that they have an Internet connection at all way out at sea, but for that price I decided to leave my computer in my laptop bag!  I can survive 4 days being disconnected, but not much more.  We did find a free Wi-Fi hotspot at the Ferry terminal... Read more

RV Weekly Round-Up (Jan. 2-8, 2010)

January 11, 2010 by Christina Bullock · 1 Comment

The RV industry has hit the ground running at the start of this new decade. Here are some highlights of RV-related news, events and video from this past week. 1. FOX Business video about the Increasing Popularity of Camping: This 5 minute video features Airstream CEO Bob Wheeler and Kampgrounds of America CEO Jim Rogers discussing the outlook for camping and recreational vehicles. 2. Computer Backups are Worthless: Chris Guld of Geeks On Tour reminds us to save backup files in case of computer failure, and to periodically test the process of restoring those backup files to make sure everything works properly. There’s no point in saving a backup file if you can’t restore the backup file to your computer. 3. Motorized campers started out 100 years ago: The RV industry celebrates its centennial in 2010, but you can take in the sweep of RV history any time you choose with a visit to the RV/MH Hall of Fame Museum & Library at Exit 96 on the Indiana Toll Road. Larry Edsall with The Detroit News reports that the Recreation Vehicle/Motor Home Heritage Foundation moved into this new, 56,000-square-foot facility east of Elkhart, Indiana in 2007. RV Shows, your Wintertime RV Fix

January 11, 2010 by Mark Polk · 6 Comments

In late November we took our last RV camping trip for 2009. We had a great time and when we returned I cleaned the RV, winterized it, and prepared it for storage. When I closed the garage door behind me the reality sank in that there would be no more RV adventures until sometime this coming spring.  It’s always a bit depressing to park the RV with no plans to use it for two or three months. It’s sort of like when football season ends, or your favorite television program ends, and you need to wait several months for the next season to begin. What I discovered can help you through these rough times is to attend some RV shows. You might need to park the RV for awhile but that doesn’t mean you can’t think about RV’s, look at RV’s, or plan the next trip in your RV. RV shows offer the avid RVer a fix to get through the wintertime RV blues. You don’t need to be in the market for a new RV to attend an RV show. It’s a lot of fun to just look at all the new RV models coming out and to dream a little bit. If you’re not shopping for an RV just be careful and keep reminding yourself that you’re only there to look. With all of the excitement, not to mention a good salesperson, it’s easy to make a hasty buying decision. There is a lot of ground to cover at an RV show and a wealth of information available. RV shows aren’t just for RV dealers to showcase their new products. RV shows are a great source of information from knowledgeable representatives on every aspect of... Read more

For snowbirds, Spring is just around the corner

January 9, 2010 by Bob Difley · 6 Comments

By Bob Difley This is one of the best times to be in the Southwestern Deserts. When the New England states are trying to cope with single digit temps and the south and mid-west are experiencing record cold, the mid 60-degree readings in the desert bring us out in T-shirts and shorts. But it still is only mid January, and though the nights are dipping into the mid forties, the day time sun not only triggers our Spring genes, it also begins tickling the genes of Spring wildflowers.
