We’ve been wanting this new feature!! And now, with Streets and Trips 2010 – we have it.
We can now plan our trip on the laptop with Streets and Trips, then transfer the locations to our Garmin Nuvi 255W. As I wrote in a previous post, we like to use both the laptop and the Garmin Nuvi to navigate while we travel. We recently attended the Hershey RV Show and were thrilled to meet Larry Petersen at the Microsoft booth. We attended his seminar to learn about the new features in the 2010 version.
He demonstrated several methods of sharing data. You can import and export .gpx files, you can use a USB cable and ‘Send to GPS’, or you can use the MSN Direct service. I researched our device – the Garmin Nuvi 255W and decided the USB method was the best. For more information directly from Larry – check out the Streets and Trips Blog.
Here is a short video on the process to send Locations from a Streets and Trips 2010 route to a Garmin Nuvi 255W. All you need is a USB cable (with a mini ‘B’ connector that fits the Nuvi) and an Internet connection:

I have a Garmin 350. I just plan my trip in that. I know I can transfer POI’s to it but I don’t know if the Microsoft stuff will work or not. I’ll bet it will.
My real question is why did you spend the money to buy streets and trips for your laptop when you already have the mobile GPS unit?
I guess the second question is why didn’t you get a GPS receiver that hooks directly to your laptop and then just use the laptop for navigation advice?
I know you are Geeks (I could be if my wife would let me spend the money) but besides that is there any other reason you choose to do it this way?
Bill
I bought Streets and Trips because My Garmin Is too unreliable It rarely takes me to were I want to go even when I know how to get there. Even it is the only way to get there.
Bill,
We use both Streets and Trips *and* the Garmin. We have the GPS receiver for Streets and Trips, and we’ve used that for our RV travels for the whole 6 years we’ve been on the road. We just got the Garmin this year – and we *love* it for finding our way around towns in the car.
But, as long as we have it, we let it do it’s thing when we’re traveling in the RV as well. That’s right, we have both the Garmin *and* the laptop navigating while we’re traveling. The Garmin has a much louder speaker. We’ve been known to miss turns when relying on S&T because the laptop speaker can’t be heard over the road noise and radio. And, when they disagree on a route – that’s when we get out the paper map.

Great tip.
I have been using both Garmin map software and tried S&T 2009 last year. S&T has some nice features. The one major downside was I could not directly transfer POI to my Nuvi 255w.
I did however discover a free utility GPS Utility from http://www.gpsu.co.uk that will “translate” the S&T .est file to 40+ different GPS type files so not only can I load my POI into my Nuvi by using GPX type file I could also load a TomTom, Delorme etc if I had one of those units.
I still use a mini USB to connect my GPS to my PC.
For now I will save the few $ and spend the small amount of time to run the translator program.
Thanks again for all your tips.
I’ve been using Strets & Trips 2005 in addition to my Nuvi 360 and really like it. Do you know if I can install the 2010 version on more than one computer without buying multiple copies?
I just purchased 2010 Streets and Trips last week and contacted Microsoft to see if I could put it on my 3 home computers. I was told by Microsoft that it was only good for 1 computer, which I find very disappointing. We travel with 2 laptops and use our home desktop for planning our travels.
So when you transfer the route to the garmin, does it just transfer your destination points or the actual route that is to be traveled?
