RV Winterizing 101 (Part 2)
September 21, 2009 by Mark Polk · 24 Comments
We enjoy using our RV as much as possible throughout the year. But when you can’t use your RV, for whatever reasons and temperatures are approaching freezing, it’s important that you protect it. Last week I talked about preparing your RV’s interior, exterior and chassis for storage during the colder winter months. I mentioned at the beginning of the article that the RV plumbing system is the most vulnerable to damage caused by plummeting temperatures. The good news is it is really quite easy to protect the RV water system from this potential threat. I am including a checklist from my “Checklists for RVers” eBook to help walk you through the winterizing process. Read more Read More →

Streets and Trips 2010
September 20, 2009 by Chris Guld · 7 Comments
by Chris Guld, Geeks on Tour We’ve been wanting this new feature!! And now, with Streets and Trips 2010 – we have it. We can now plan our trip on the laptop with Streets and Trips, then transfer the locations to our Garmin Nuvi 255W. As I wrote in a previous post, we like to use both the laptop and the Garmin Nuvi to navigate while we travel. We recently attended the Hershey RV Show and were thrilled to meet Larry Petersen at the Microsoft booth. We attended his seminar to learn about the new features in the 2010 version. He demonstrated several methods of sharing data. You can import and export .gpx files, you can use a USB cable and ‘Send to GPS’, or you can use the MSN Direct service. I researched our device – the Garmin Nuvi 255W and decided the USB method was the best. For more information directly from Larry – check out the Streets and Trips Blog. Here is a short video on the process to send Locations from a Streets and Trips 2010 route to a Garmin Nuvi 255W. All you need is a USB cable (with a mini ‘B’ connector that fits the Nuvi) and an Internet connection: (You can view the video full screen by clicking on the icon in the lower right corner that looks like an X.) Fabulous Fall Birding at New Jersey’s Great Egg
September 19, 2009 by Christina Bullock · 1 Comment
General Info: Great Egg Harbor National Scenic and Recreational River, near Atlantic City in southeastern New Jersey, sits within the Pinelands National Reserve. The 129-mi. river system starts as a trickle in Berlin, NJ then gains 17 tributaries before meeting the Atlantic Ocean at Great Egg Harbor. Hours and Fees: Entrance to the park is free. The corridor is open daily, but hours vary depending on which part of the river you want to visit. For visitor information call (215) 597-5823. Activities: This is one of the best places on the East Coast for birding! You’ll see warblers and other migratory species in spring and fall. Hawks come through the Cape May area each fall, so take a look at the fall birding guide for tips on what to see when and where. You can also enjoy biking, hiking, boating, canoeing and fishing. The best stretch for canoeing is the 22 miles between Penny Pot County Park and Atlantic County Park at Lake Lenape. Stop by the Warren E. Fox Nature Center, the park’s headquarters, for nature displays, brochures, and maps. The staff on hand can answer your questions, and there are restrooms in the building as well. Don’t miss the live animal displays of native critters you may encounter on a nature walk through the woods. Located at Estell Manor Park, 3.5 miles south of Mays Landing on Route 50. Weather: Expect typical northeast temperatures and conditions with four distinct seasons. Camping Info: You can stay at an RV park in the nearby town of Hammonton,... Read more

Coyote Camping in the Southwestern Deserts II
September 19, 2009 by Bob Difley · 5 Comments
By Bob Difley In last week’s blog I described how to find dispersed boondocking campsites (coyote camping) in the American deserts. Now that you know how to find coyote camping spots, the following tips will help to enhance and expand your desert boondocking experience: The best way to find dispersed campsites in the desert is to explore first in your tow or toad, checking the road surface for soft spots, lethal potholes, and muffler-killing rocks. Try to find roads that follow the less-eroded high ground rather than up a wash, where the surface could be sandy and soft. You can often find “desert pavement” on the higher surfaces, a naturally occurring tile or cobblestone-like surface that is very hard and supportive of even heavy rigs. And you are likely to have better views from the higher ground. Choose a spot, if available, that has been camped in before, rather than destroying desert plants in creating a new site. Haul as much water in Jerry Jugs or inflatable blatters (available at Camping World or RV and boating supplystores) with you as you can carry. Dump these into your fresh water tank as it goes down to give you extended staying time. Buy the type of sewer cap that has a fitting for a garden hose, which you can then lead off away from your site for your gray water to drain into (dig a deep hole and cover outflow with a layer of sand after each use). Never dump your black water except into an approved dump station). Solar panels work great in the desert, even... Read more

Dear RV Doc, How would I install a new toilet in my RV? I’d like to go to a bigger one. Is the RV toilet the same as a toilet in a home with the two bolts and the wax ring? Or is it an entirely different hook up? - Armin Meyer, (Tacoma, WA) Read more Read More →
