The Gem State’s land mass stretches from Canada to the Nevada border and within those boundaries exists virtually every type of terrain. You’ll find rolling green hills, tree-covered mountains, and clear, unspoiled lakes in the north. The central section holds vast ranges of jagged peaks to be conquered by adventurous climbers. The southern part of the state offers unobstructed views of open vistas and developed farmland. If you’re in the market for a down-to-earth vacation escape, Idaho may be just what you’re looking for. Try this One Tank RV Trip from Woodall’s to get a sampling of the state’s diverse scenery and outdoor fun. Back Pain: The Scourge of RVers

August 26, 2009 by Lynn Difley · 5 Comments

By Lynn Difley Bill writes to me” I have spinal stenosis but that really only bothers me when I stand and walk.  The thing that bothers me when I sit and drive a lot is the back end of my butt.  It is like all the pressure is on it and it really hurts.  Getting up and out and walking around for a while makes it better but once it starts it only takes about another half hour of driving to bring it back again.  I have a 5er with a power seat in the truck.  I have tried moving the seat forward or back, changing the height, changing the tilt of the seat with no success. “Any suggestions on what causes this and what I can do about it?” Read more  Read More →

Acadia National Park aka Mount Desert Island

August 26, 2009 by Dan Parlow · 1 Comment

There are many national parks in the United States, but as Dimitri and Madolyn discovered and mentioned in their Trip Journal, 2008 Keys 2 Canada, Acadia National Park is considered to be one of the most beautiful of all the parks.  On the east coast in Maine, conveniently located off Highway 1, Acadia, or Mount Desert Island as it was first known, is complete with mountains, islands, forests and coastlines; a visual feast for the eyes.  Here is their wonderful posting. Acadia National Park itself is actually mostly island. Long ago, explorer Samuel Champlain saw the bald peaks of the mountains on the island, and was struck by the similarity of them to mountain deserts. Using this simile, he named the mountains l’Isle de Monts Deserts, which became over time Mount Desert Island. The lofty mountain Champlain was viewing and named the island after is Cadillac Mountain, which was named by yet another explorer named Cadillac, who also founded Detroit, Michigan. A few interesting facts about the island Park is that it was the first of any eastern national parks to be implemented east of the Mississippi River, and that Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the entire Eastern seaboard north of Rio de Janeiro. While Acadia National Park has no single “pull” factor such as Old Faithful or the Grand Canyon, it does have a great deal charm, beauty and solitude that invites visitors to partake. It is merely an incredibly lovely and serene place to contemplate life’s... Read more

Visit Hells Gate State Park for Breathtaking Scenery

August 25, 2009 by Christina Bullock · Leave a Comment

General Info: Hells Gate State Park is a perfect introduction to both Idaho’s Lewis and Clark country and to Hells Canyon, the deepest river gorge in North America. The park covers 960 acres and sits at an elevation of 733 ft. Here you’ll enjoy great fishing and boating on the Snake River just south of Lewiston, Idaho. Hours and Fees: The park is open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Daily entrance (day use) costs $4 per vehicle. For visitor information call the park office at (208) 799-5015. Activities: Take a jet boat tour from the park docks into Hells Canyon to explore this magnificent gorge that’s deeper than even the Grand Canyon. The park features docks, launch ramps, boat fuel and boat rental at the riverside Hells Gate Marina. The steelhead season usually runs through fall and winter, while spring and summer bring chances to reel in smallmouth bass, catfish, trout and sturgeon. Of course the Snake River is also open to swimming for a chance to cool off from the summer heat. Nature trails meandering through the park invite you to take a hike or go for a bike ride. These trails are a great way to spot some of the park’s “native” residents: quail, geese, cottontail rabbits, and deer, to name a few. The park also hosts a volleyball area and playground to keep the whole family entertained. Don’t miss the park’s Lewis and Clark Discovery Center for indoor and outdoor displays, as well as a film describing the expedition’s journey through Idaho. digg_url... Read more

RV Doctor – RV Heating Flame Keeps Going Out

August 25, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 2 Comments

Dear RV Doc, We own a 1999 Safari with the Hydro Hot heating system. The system will run for a while then the fire will go out causing a flame-out warning light on the panel to light. Sometimes it will go on and off like it’s getting air in the line. I’ve bled the line as per the manual but continue to have this problem. This makes for some cold mornings as the thermostat continues to run the zone fans without any heat coming from the radiators. Any ideas? - Greg Peterson, (Bremerton, WA) Read more  Read More →

On the Southern Edge of the Great Northern Forest

August 24, 2009 by Christina Bullock · 3 Comments

General Info: Prince Albert National Park, in central Saskatchewan, preserves 388,000 hectares of a transition zone between the coniferous boreal forest and aspen parkland. The park also includes about 1,500 lakes and streams. This naturally diverse habitat houses a multitude of wildlife, including a herd of free-range plains bison and Canada’s only fully-protected nesting colony for white pelicans. The park also contains important cultural features such as the lakeside cabin of conservationist Grey Owl and the rich 8000-year history of native peoples. Hours and Fees: The park is open year-round. The Information Centre is open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., mid-May to early September, and on Saturdays during the peak cross-country ski season. Main campgrounds are open from mid-May to early September, and winter camping areas are also available. digg_url = 'http://digg.com/travel_places/On_the_Southern_Edge_of_the_Great_Northern_Forest'; Daily entrance costs (in Canadian dollars) $7.80 for adults ages 17-64, $6.80 for seniors age 65+, $3.90 for youth ages 6-16 (children 5 and under get in free). Annual passes are also available. Activities: Although Prince Albert National Park includes 150 km of hiking trails, you probably won’t need hiking boots to traverse them. Most of the trails feature good walking surfaces along gently rolling, forested hills without much change in elevation. There are several scenic driving routes to see the park’s wonders. Wildlife can often be seen... Read more

Why Weigh your RV?

August 24, 2009 by Mark Polk · 1 Comment

Weighing your RV can be the difference between a safe, enjoyable trip and a costly, disastrous trip. With multiple slide out rooms, amenities like washers and dryers, large holding tank capacities and the ample amount of storage space available on today’s RVs it’s easy to see why so many are overloaded. Overloaded RVs are extremely dangerous. Actually there are a lot more reasons for weighing your RV than I listed here, but my intent was to highlight some of the most important reasons for weighing your RV. Read more  Read More →
