As they traveled along the northernmost region of Michigan, travelers Mike and Roxanne visited one of the highlights of the area, Mackinac Island; detailing their tour of the area in their journal, Mike and Roxanne Travel East.
The island north of the tip of the mitten which is Michigan is accessible only by ferry. Because of this limited access, very few vehicles are seen on this island. Instead, people get around the quaint town by bicycle or horse and carriage rides. Bicycles are rented by the thousands, charged at an hourly, daily or weekly rate depending on the visitor’s needs. All varieties of bikes are available; standard, 3 or 7 speed, tandems and more. The horse and carriage rides are extremely popular and very fitting for the charming village; some of the carriages are quite large, holding groups up to 50 people.
One of the highlights of visiting the island is touring Fort Mackinac. Standing here on the island since the late 1700’s, tourists can either take a guided or self-guided tour of the buildings. A reenactment is performed of an actual court martial that proves to be quite interesting and entertaining.
Many shops dot the hilly island; candy merchants are very well attended where visitors can view fudge being made, and sample the many varieties that are available for purchase.
Arch Rock is an interesting sight on the island, as well; towering over the water line at 146 feet, and as wide as 50 feet across. The rock arches due to the effects of thousands of years of wind and water erosion, although Indian legend has it that a young maiden who fell in love with an undesirable brave was tied to the rock by her father. She cried, with her many tears falling upon and washing away the rock before her handsome brave rescued her from the rock and taking her to his home in the sky.
Likely the biggest attraction on Mackinac Island, though, is the Grand Hotel. A rather pricey yet elegant hotel that even has a charge to walk through the lobby or sit on the immense porch, the Grand Hotel has 378 rooms ranging between $366 per night to $650 per night. The hotel is such a beautiful and magnificent landmark that a movie was filmed here: Somewhere in Time, starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. It is also quite massive; it can be seen by those arriving on the ferry before they reach the island.
While most of the people seen milling about the island streets are tourists and visitors, there are some on the island who live their year round. It can be quite cold, and on particularly severe winters, they fashion an “ice road” between Mackinac Island and St. Ignace; detailing it with Christmas trees. The residents then use sleighs to travel across the ice.
When visiting the northern region of Michigan, a trip to Mackinac Island is one that cannot be missed. Historic, quaint and entertaining, both the ferry ride to the island as well as the time spent exploring it will be well worth the trip.

Mackinac Island is indeed a beautiful place to include visiting on your trip to Northern Michigan. The reason you don’t see motorized vehicles on the island is that they are not allowed. I believe they have 1 ambulance and 1 emergency vehicle all other transportation is, as you mentioned, by bicycle or horse drawn taxi’s & carriages. Even for the residents who live on the island. In the winter, they do use snowmobiles to get around.
Good article, it’s been awhile since we’ve visited there & good memories were revived.
Mackinac Island is a beautiful and most unusual place. Near by is the spectacular Mackinac Bridge. This five mile long span is, in my mind, as beautiful as the Golden Gate. If you can get a chance, take a cruise under it on one of the tour boats that offer sunset cruises. Quite romantic and a great place for Kodak moments.
This Labor Day thousands of visitors will again cross the bridge on foot celebrating the 52 year heritage of the bridge walk. Following the Governor’s party, also walking, the walkers will start on the St. Ignace side of the bridge and walk to the Macinaw City side. Here’s link to the bridge site:

Mackinac Island is very beautiful!! You can bike around the entire circumference of the island in about 2 hours. I did back several years ago, but I don’t remember the amount of time it took. Plus take the Horse & Buggy rides, they are very enjoyable, and you can get a lot of local stories and interesting facts about the island, history, and inhabitants.
Again Mackinac Island is very beautiful and a reccommended stop.

I agree that Mackinac Island is very beautiful, but I hope that you also took a trip out from there to visit all of the upper penn. of Mich.
I was pleased to read about Mackinaw Island. You see I live about 100 miles from Mackinaw in northern part of the lower peninsula and feel quite lucky to have great places like this to visit with a short drive. Should any of you decide to visit here be sure to take time to visit the locks at Sault Saint Marie just 50 miles north. There are camping facilities right on the Saint Mary’s River and you can watch the large ore carriers navigate the shipping channel right from your RV.
Northern Michigan has much to offer RV folks and we would love to have you come visit. Don’t forget the fall colors. Starting Mid September through Mid October for best colors. Really a great time to RV here in Michigan.
Everyone is right on with their comments. Automobiles were outlawed more than a hundred years ago because they scared the horses. Be sure and take a trip around the backside of the island & the middle. Lots of beautiful Victorian “cottages” to see there too.
Somewhere In Time has a website http://www.somewhereintime.tv.com The movie was filmed almost entirely on the island. Esther Williams also played in a movie set on the island and Grand Hotel in the ’40’s/’50’s. Every fall there is a Somewhere In Time movie weekend at the Grand. Dirty Jobs has been there & was there again recently at the Grand.
It’s a magical place. Try and stay overnight if possible (lots of B&B’s & hotels) or at least stay until the last evening ferry in the summertime. It’s actually a very small island; only 8 miles around the perimeter. Easy to explore; great for hikes & horseback rides. It was the second designated national park in the land after Yellowstone, but was turned over to the state.
