One Manufacturer’s Innovative Service Offer

July 23, 2009 by Lug_Nut · 8 Comments

A couple of months ago I wrote about the differences experienced between getting factory service compared to service at a local dealer.  I also made reference to Newmar’s factory service being offered to orphaned makes.  That is makes that were built by manufacturers that have either closed or ceased operations at this time. Does this concept make sense?  Yes, I believe it does.  Many RV components are basically the same part, regardless of the make.  Items such as furnaces, hydronic heating systems, refrigerators, stoves, back up cameras, power seats, etc. are identical, as is their installation procedures.  Additionally, in principle, the entire units are built similar and designed to serve the same purpose. Well, are there any takers?  Are Monaco’s, Holiday Ramblers, Travel Supreme’s and the likes, turning up for service there?  In an effort to find that out, I travelled to the Newmar factory last month.  Upon arrival, on a Sunday afternoon, I observed a 2008 Holiday Rambler Navigator hooked up right in front of the service welcome center.  In the overflow camping area was a fairly new Travel Supreme, also all hooked up for the night. Now, I realize that many owners of these other makes are probably not aware of Newmar’s innovative offer.  Apparently, that is also true for many Newmar owners, causing some curious looks at these, foreign to them, makes.  I could read their faces.  “What’s that Monaco doing here?  This is Camp... Read more

RV Doctor – How Do I Fix the Shakiness of My 5th-Wheel?

July 23, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 6 Comments

Dear RV Doctor, My wife and I have been RVing for about 5 years but we used a tent for 25 years before that. We started with a bumper pull and loved it. We had no problems with getting it very stable. Last year we decided to upgrade to a fifth wheel, which is when our problems started. We cannot seem to get it stable. No matter what I do, we still have a shaky RV. I do have a tripod for the front and I have put an extra jack in the area of the steps, but nothing seems to help. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks for any help you might have. - Ron Hooten, (Kempner, TX) Read more  Read More →

Cruise the Cherry Blossom Drive through Northern Michigan

July 22, 2009 by Christina Bullock · 2 Comments

Michigan is one of those states that’s truly capable of taking your breath away. With over 10,000 miles of crystal clear streams, thousands of rivers and lakes, and more freshwater shoreline than any other state in the country, Michigan has virtually cornered the market on water-based recreation. Up in the northern part of the state, you’ll find some of the best fishing to be had in the entire Great Lakes region. Every stop on this One Tank RV Trip route from Woodall’s has somewhere for you to park the rig, take a deep breath, and let the stresses of day-to-day life melt away. Grayling Starting at Grayling, one place you won’t want to miss is the Hartwick Pines State Park. Spanning nearly 10,000 acres, the park provides more than 100 campsites, several trails for strolling or hiking, and great fishing on four small lakes. It’s also been designated a watchable wildlife area, so be on the lookout for birds and small mammals in their habitat. The Hartwick Pines Logging Museum is on the park’s grounds, and is a popular visitor’s destination that showcases the 19th century logging trade with buildings, a logging camp, and several restored rooms from the period. A visitor’s center features artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of the loggers who pioneered Michigan’s logging history.digg_url = 'http://digg.com/travel_places/Cruise_the_Cherry_Blossom_Drive_through_Northern_Michigan'; Traverse City The next stop, Traverse City, lies 50 miles eastward on MI-72.... Read more

July 22, 2009 by Mark Corgan · 11 Comments

In today’s economy, RV owners are either trying to sell their RV to reduce their month cash outlay, or are hanging on to them instead of trading them in on something “bigger and better.” Those who are keeping their RV are instead modifying them with doodads and gizmos to suit their personal needs. There are many ways to go about this and this article focuses on 10 low cost ways you can modify your RV so you can have what the RV manufacturers usually leave out. Read more  Read More →

Goodnight, Sleep Well

July 22, 2009 by Lynn Difley · 1 Comment

Goodnight, sleep well. It’s a common parting phrase. When we leave the campsite potluck, or the card game at our neighbor’s rig, we say, “goodnight, sleep well.” If you are one of the many who suffer from insomnia, this is not a welcome phrase. Insomnia is a common problem, and often increases with the years. You’d think a motorhoming life would be free of worries and problems that cause sleep difficulties, but it may not be true for you. Do you have trouble falling asleep, lying there listening to the vague hum of your neighbor’s TV, or the crickets in the fields? Or do you get to sleep easily, only to wake up in the dark dead of night, and not be able to find restful sleep again until the early morning hours. If you have bought a new mattress, or at least tried higher thread count sheets and still not found relief, I have a prescription that is one of the best, most effective ways to encourage sleep without harmful side effects. Best of all, it’s free. This technique is based on pranyama, an ancient Indian practice of breathing. You may think breathing is totally unconscious, but the fact is it can be controlled, and used to influence heart rate, blood pressure, circulation, hormone production, stress levels and other bodily functions. So how does the breathing pattern go? Glad you asked. Lying comfortably, after you have been to the bathroom, smoothed out the sheets and turned out all the lights, close your eyes and relax your body. Inhale through your nose... Read more

Keep Cool This Hot Summer – Your RV Air Conditioner May Need Help

July 21, 2009 by Fred Brandeberry · 5 Comments

AIR CONDITIONING: Your Air Conditioner is designed for a 20 degree temperature drop. If it is 100 degrees outside, the best your air conditioner can do is 80 F degree in the best of circumstances. Clean your air filters weekly, or sooner if needed. Annually perform the needed preventive maintenance, clean the coils under the outside cover and other items listed in your owner’s manual. Pull down your shades, and add insulation to your windows when necessary. Park in the shade – but examine the trees and structures for possible wind damage before doing so. A water mister may be attached to your awning, or awning rail in low humidity climates to help keep your RV cool. A timer could be added, maybe 9am to 7pm to save water. Use a water filter if the water is hard. Go on a day trip, to the mall, the movies or to the swimming pool on a HOT day. Monitor your AC voltage, the minimum is 107 volts, the maximum is 130 volts. Close or block off living areas not needed. Retract slides to minimize the space needed to air condition. Pay close attention to your pets. Do they have water at all times, and can they retreat to the cooler floor areas? Avoid the steam and warmth of cooking inside on a hot day. Cook outdoors or in the earliest and latest part of the day. Dress in light colored clothing; sit under the shade and enjoy your new location. Happy Camping, Fred b. rv101byfred.com  Read More →
