Blogging Offline with Windows Live Writer

May 24, 2009 by Chris Guld · 5 Comments

by Geeks on Tour: A while ago, in my personal blog I wrote about discovering Windows Live Writer. It is a program, freely downloadable from Microsoft, which allows you to compose blog entries offline. It works with several blogging systems, including the 2 I use – Blogger and WordPress. After you compose your blog post, it will take care of uploading it to the web, including the pictures. Last week, we had some trouble with our Internet connection and I wanted to write a blog post, so I dusted off Live Writer and gave it another shot. It’s really an amazing little program! I’m using it now, even when my Internet connection is working fine. In a couple of my recent personal blog posts, I have maps as part of the blog post, and the maps don’t come from my normal Google Maps. They’re from Virtual Earth, Microsoft’s competitor to Google Earth. That’s because I used Live Writer to insert the map. Since Live Writer is by Microsoft, it uses Microsoft’s maps. Live Writer makes it just SOO easy to insert a map. It’s also waayy easy to insert a link, and the links automatically open in a new window! If you’ve been using Blogger, you know that making a link open in a new window is a painful process there. If you hate how Blogger adds new photos to the top of your post, you’ll love how Live Writer adds them at your cursor position. AND, you can even set it up to so that your photos get uploaded to your own hosted webspace... Read more

RV Holding Tank Monitors

May 24, 2009 by Mark Corgan · 11 Comments

Sometimes the smallest of things can be the most frustrating. Take for example, RV holding tank monitors. You push a button and the monitor display is supposed to tell you the levels of fluid in your holding tanks using a few simple indicator lights. One light means empty, two lights means 1/3 full, three lights means 2/3 full, and four lights means full. The problem is that these simple indicator lights are notoriously inaccurate and very misleading. Take for example the case where the monitor is showing two lights for your fresh water tank level, meaning you have 1/3 remaining. As soon as you use a small bit of water, the level drops below the 1/3 level and now the indicator lights show you are empty. This is true no matter the size of your holding tanks. The standard sensor arrangement is such that it cannot measure levels any more accurately. How can you get more accurate readings for any and all of your holding tanks? Modify your RV with a See-Level Tank Monitor System. Read more  Read More →

Finally, Sensible and Achievable Mileage Standards

May 23, 2009 by Bob Difley · 63 Comments

By Bob Difley This was a big week for environmentalists, the auto companies, and foes of foreign oil addiction. The Obama administration announced new CAFÉ mileage standards for American built cars and light trucks. Beginning in 2016—four years earlier than the 2007 energy bill–passenger cars will have to attain 39 mpg (a 30% increase) and light trucks 30 mpg for a combined mpg of 35.5. This is a huge increase over current CAFÉ (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards. The bill will also regulate tailpipe emissions of carbon dioxide. Much of credit for pushing these standards goes to the West coast states and the northeastern states for pushing tougher standards than the Federal Government had required. Since about 45% of the population lives in these progressive states, the car makers knew that the more stringent standards were inevitable and jumped on board. In fact, one of the original complaints of the car companies was that it would be impossible to manufacture vehicles that had to comply with different standards in every state. So they were ready to accept the a mileage standard (after fighting higher mileage standards for the last 15 years or so). What this means to the environment and global climate change is that there will be far less CO2 emissions from vehicles (currently about one-quarter of total greenhouse gas emissions in the US) due to the reduced amount of gasoline burned, as well as an improvement in air quality. The new standards will reduce our... Read more

Splendid Summits at Colorado’s Rocky Mountain N.P.

May 23, 2009 by Christina Bullock · 2 Comments

General Info: Rocky Mountain National Park protects 358.3 square miles of subalpine valleys, ragged snow-capped summits, alpine tundra, and spruce and pine forests in north-central Colorado. This breath-taking nature preserve was established in 1915 and made an International Biosphere Reserve in 1976. The Continental Divide runs northwest to southeast through the middle of the park, following the steep mountain peaks and creating two very different climates and ecosystems. digg_url = 'http://digg.com/travel_places/Splendid_Summits_at_Colorado_s_Rocky_Mountain_N_P'; You can get to this park by taking advantage of Colorado’s oldest designated scenic route, the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. Available year-round, it runs for 55 miles from Central City to Estes Park on state routes 119, 72 and 7. Along the way, you’ll see old mining towns and majestic summits towering over pine forests that open into meadows. Keep an eye out for elk, coyotes and deer! You’ll also pass by Golden Gate Canyon State Park and the Indian Peaks Wilderness, which offer more opportunities to experience the quintessential Rocky Mountain landscape. Hours and Fees: The park itself is open 24 hours every day of the year, but the visitor centers have limited seasonal hours. An entrance fee of $20 per vehicle is good for 7 consecutive days. Stop by one of the visitor centers upon your arrival to get up-to-date information on road conditions, hiking trails, and a schedule of ranger-led programs. Activities: Whether... Read more
