State Parks: Prairie Dog, Kansas
March 23, 2009 by Christina Bullock · 4 Comments
Now that you’ve seen the tallgrass prairies of Iowa and Kansas, I find it only fitting that you take a gander at the shortgrass prairies of western Kansas. (I know, I got bit carried away with the prairie theme, but what do you expect from a girl from the West Coast who grew up reading the “Little House” series and Willa Cather’s “My Antonia”?) At any rate, it’s a great stop on your way up to Yellowstone, the Pacific Northwest and beyond! As the moniker suggests, the 1,150-acre Prairie Dog State Park in Norton County is home to a thriving prairie dog colony. It is also the site of the last remaining adobe house in Kansas, built in the 1890s but since renovated. Take a peek at the 19th-century one-room schoolhouse as well and imagine what life was like on the windswept plains in the days of horse drawn carriages. digg_url = 'http://digg.com/travel_places/State_Parks_Review_Prairie_Dog_Kansas'; Things to Do and See: As one of the less-visited parks, Prairie Dog will be a nice break from the summer crowds. Sportsmen will delight at the wealth of game at the Norton Wildlife Area, from pheasants, water fowl and rabbit to mule deer and white tailed deer. The park also features an archery range. Hunting and fishing licenses can be obtained at the park office. Bring your rod and reel for fishing in the Keith Sebelius Reservoir. Here you will find a launch ramp, dock and marina for your boating convenience. Fishing has been good in recent years for black bass,... Read more
Porpoising: What it is, and how to stop it
March 23, 2009 by Robert Henderson · 11 Comments
A guy called me up the other day and told me his Dolphin motorhome was porpoising. I told him it sounded like it was having an identity crisis! (insert rim shot here). Seriously though, porpoising is something we get quite a few calls on, and it is one of those terms that you hear about mostly with regard to RV’s. Porpoising is front to rear bounce; the front hits a bump, then the rear hits the bump, and they both bounce independently of each other, creating an oscillating motion. If the problem is severe enough, it can feel like you’re going to pull the wheels off the ground. The problem is more typical in shorter coaches (low 20-foot to low 30 foot) than long ones. You don’t have as much trouble when you head up to 37 foot and beyond, and we definitely have more problems controlling it on a short wheelbase coach. The reason is that there is more time for the bump to settle out between the front and rear wheels on a longer wheelbase coach. Read more Read More →
Your Body, Time for Scheduled Maintenance.
March 23, 2009 by Gary Smith, Jr. · Leave a Comment
This time of year most of us are planning on getting our campers and Tow vehicles or toads in shape for camping. We are changing oil and putting in new batteries and cleaning awnings and all the other stuff to get ready for the spring, summer camping season. One of the biggest things that we forget to do is take the time and get ourselves checked out. Think of it this way, you wouldn’t expect your camper to tow well (or safely) with the wheels damaged or tires bald would you? Well, how to you think you can safely camp if your own wheels (legs) are having problems? So I would like to encourage all of you to go see your doctor and have a check up. Think of it as your ten-thousand mile maintenance for your body. But what most of us don’t know is how to approach a check up. To be honest, most of us are afraid of our doctors. Folks, they are just people too…. Heck, some of them even like to camp; ask them you maybe surprised. But how do you get the most out of your doctors visit? Read more Read More →

Internet with Tethered Cellphone
March 22, 2009 by Chris Guld · 18 Comments
I’ve written about this a couple of times before because I think it is just such a perfect solution for RVers who just need a part-time connection to the Internet. If you have the right cell phone, and the right cellular service plan, you can turn the data feature on and off. No extra equipment, no extra contract, a pro-rated charge. Last week we told a lot of people about this at our ‘Internet on the Road” seminar at the FMCA convention. One person came up to us a couple days later saying they checked with their Verizon service rep and were told it couldn’t be done. Yes it can. We’re using that method right now. I can’t speak for other cellular providers, but Verizon definitely offers it on their phone plans. I do see that they are using new terminology. Where they used to refer to ‘Broadband Access Connect’, they are now using the terms, “Mobile Broadband Connect.” See the Verizon Wireless information at: Mobile Broadband Connect and Mobile Broadband Connect FAQs Here is a 4 minute video on exactly how we use Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband connect to get online with our laptop – while we’re driving down the road!
