National Parks: St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, Wisconsin

February 21, 2009 by Christina Bullock · Leave a Comment

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/travel_places/Cruise_around_the_St_Croix_NSR_Wisconsin';St. Croix National Scenic Riverway traverses 252 miles of river and shoreline along a large chunk of the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. The area actually includes two rivers: the St. Croix and the Namekagon, both of which are ideal for wildlife watching and various aquatic recreation activities. Human settlement of the St. Croix Riverway began about 10,000 years ago. More recently, the Dakota, Ojibwe and other native tribes traveled the rivers to trade with European fur trappers. An 1837 treaty allowed the settlement of European immigrants; logging operations set up shop soon after and became the primary industry in the area until 1912. Read more  Read More →

RV Weekly Round-Up (February 14-20, 2009)

February 20, 2009 by Christina Bullock · 1 Comment

This series highlights some of the preceding week’s top RV articles from various online sources. Only articles/videos of interest to the RV industry or RV community will be on this list. This series is a sort of “mini-index” of hot new RV content for the week. 1. RV Consumer Loans Added to TALF Funding: The Federal Reserve Board announced it will buy RV loans along with car loans and other consumer loans. The Recreational Vehicle Industry Association successfully argued to policymakers that the lack of credit was critical, and that RV manufacturers would plunge into further financial distress if consumers and dealers could not borrow money to buy RVs. 2. California Allows Continued Use of R134a Refrigerant: A new rule approved by the California Air Resources Board will allow do-it-yourselfers to continue buying R134a automotive refrigerant to service their RV air conditioning systems. The law requires new product packaging, consumer education and a deposit/return system. 3. There’s a new hitch on the market designed for those RVers who have light-weight trailers under 4,000 lbs. yet still want the performance of an original Equal-i-zer 4-Point Sway Control hitch. Progress Manufacturing debuted its 4K Equal-i-zer® hitch at last year’s RVIA show in Louisville, Kentucky and released it on the market early this month. Learn more. 4. East Coast RV Shows Coming Feb. 27, 2009: Visit the 16th Annual Rhode Island RV & Camping Show at the R.I. Convention Center in... Read more

Firedude’s RV software review #2

February 20, 2009 by Tony Cornett · 13 Comments

An RVer’s self compiling Budget Worksheet In my first review I gave a very extensive review of RV Notebook which I feel is the best out there for RV’ers that I have found and very comprehensive. As mentioned though it does not work on MAC’s and hopefully sometime in the future it will. In this review I’ll offer my own RV Budget Worksheet developed in Excel. I’m not sure, but I believe for the MAC users your Office version will convert it for you. If not let me know please. Obviously you must also have MS Excel installed on your computer. This particular one was done in Office 2003 and should be compatible with later versions as I’ve also used it in Office 2007. Once you download it, save as Worksheet2 or whatever you want to name it so if you make any mistakes or it gets accidentally deleted you’ll have a backup copy. While not a full blown software program the Budget Worksheet was designed to help you track your expenses and was aimed at Full-timers and extended travelers , but can be used in general RV’ing as well to track maintenance costs and other items. I left it unlocked and open so you can adjust it and rework it to suit your own specific needs. It tally’s your figures for you which makes it much easier. It’s expandable and you can really adjust it for any specific needs. Unless you are proficient in Excel don’t change anything but the titles of an item and you should be fine. As it is it is great even for planning a vacation and listing, tracking... Read more

A Class A Mirror Option That Needs To Be Designed And Offered

February 19, 2009 by Lug_Nut · 28 Comments

There is always room for new innovative ideas for motor homes and recreational vehicles. Each year the manufacturers seem to come up with, and deliver, something new to the market.  Items such as side cameras, power tilt and telescopic steering wheels, full wall slides, one piece windshields, hydronic heat, and more, have shown up over the years.  But there is one option that has not been introduced that has been available on some SUV’s for years and could really benefit a class “A” coach. That option is “Power Folding Mirrors”. A control that when activated, folds the outside mirrors back and into near flush with the coach sides, or in some cases forward to rest in front of the windshield.  Then, at the push of a button, the mirrors power back to their normal driving position. This option would save many owners from damaging the mirrors while traversing narrow toll booths, customs gates, or any other large vehicle non-friendly obstruction areas.  In addition, folding at least the driver mirror during times when travelling on narrow roadways, tunnels or bridges could help reduce the chances of striking the mirror on an oncoming vehicle or vehicle’s mirror. It is strange that the mirror makers and the coach builders have stopped further development and enhancements to these large mirrors.  They made them power adjusting, they gave them the ability to heat for adverse weather and they incorporated L.E.D. directional lighting within the mirror... Read more

RV Doctor – Should I Just Clean or Remove Old Caulk before Recaulking?

February 19, 2009 by Gary Bunzer · 3 Comments

Hey Doc, I just purchased your book, The RV Owner’s Handbook; thanks for the wealth of information. I own a 27-foot recreational vehicle and am about to embark on the “spring shakedown” and want to recaulk any external caulk with possible cracks or leaks, etc. I note you indicate remove all old caulking which would be a daunting task in terms of end caps, side molding, roof vents, etc. Can one simply clean the old caulking with denatured alcohol or some other product and then recaulk? How does one tackle such a task? Thanks much, Mike Bengs, (Roseburg, OR) Read more  Read More →
