Never left a comment before? Here is a reason…
A co-worker of mine recently pointed me to a great blog, The Simple Dollar, and an interesting post on it in which the blogger Trent asks his readers who don’t regularly comment to leave a brief comment answering a few questions for him so that he can get a better picture of his readership. He says it will better enable him to make sure his blog contains the information that will keep his readers coming back.
Never one to disregard a good idea, I’m going to flatter the living daylights out of Trent and copy his idea.
So now, dear lurkers, and you know who you are, here is your chance to leave a comment, answering the below questions. And for the pragmatists out there asking “What’s in it for me?”, know that your comment will help me and the many bloggers who generously contribute to RV.net to better provide you with the information you crave.
Here are the questions I’d like you to answer in your comment:
- What is your location? (State/province or region)
- How did you hear about the RV.net blog?
- Are you male or female?
- How old are you? (You can answer 50’s or 60’s if you prefer not to leave an exact age.)
- Are you married?
- Why do you visit the RV.net blog?
- What, if anything, is missing on the RV.net blog?
Note that when leaving a comment, if you are concerned with privacy, you are free to use a nickname or alias. I understand the need and desire for privacy, and I respect yours. This is not intended in any way to be intrusive, but just an attempt to better understand our general readership so we can improve our offerings.
P.S. Those of you who regularly comment are also more than welcome to comment. I only emphasize “lurkers” above because I figure they are shy and need the extra invitation.

I am looking for somebody smart out there than can get me hooked up with the right dealer for a back up camera for my truck (2001 Ford F150). Or a smarter way than I am doing (getting in and out of the vehicle to see where I am while hooking up). My bride doesn’t seem to know right from left forward or backwards so I hook up alone.

I live in Houston, Texas. (Howdy, Toni and Casey, posting above! What is it about us Houstonians and RVing, eh?!) I fell into RVblog when surfing, as best I remember. I’m female, in my early 50s and married.
I’m a lurker because I have still to actually experience RVing(!) — opps! Something I hope to remedy very soon, of course! So of course I don’t actually have any specific questions yet; but I’m a veritable sponge for information about the lifestyle — which is why I like this blog. Hubbie and I are hoping to retire in our late 50s and have been considering taking up the RV lifestyle — we certainly love our driving holidays exploring the US in our SUV, staying overnight in motels; and everything I read about RVing is giving me a strong appetite for it. I had a holiday trailer home (permanently sited) in a former life when I lived in UK, which I loved. It just seems like a great lifestyle.

Whar might be missing: for the time being, all the info posted fall in so many categories that it is kind of hard to pinpoint a subject in particular. But should the occasion arise, you’ll be the first to know.

Dan Nuckols. Put a double vertical stripe of about a foot in length. Put a single vertical stripe on the pick up rear window. Stripes to be mounted while the rig is hooked up. The concept is to place the single vertical line between the two vertical lines. With the three lines properly aligned no matter what the angle of approach the truck tow ball will mate with the trailer hitch. Hope this idea helps you.

I need to know more about how our RV works and how to fix the problems that arise.
I’d like to see more DIY articles on repair, ie, internet access options, how the solar panels work and how to fix the one’s that don’t, etc. Some of us need pictures to go with the explanations…
Thanks for the wonderful articles.

Not a blogger or chatroom person so will search out the site to see how blogging works and how to maneuver/search the site.

I wish RV.NET would set (and enforce) a universal standard for Authors. Some haven’t posted in months. Some write two lines every time and think they have made a major impact on the RV community (NOT), while the rest of you have gone to great lengths to provide a GREAT service to the RV Community at large!

The RV industry is woefully lacking in quality control. Most of the problems I have had should have been caught as the RV was being built. We need a strong advocate to advance this need for quality.

What, if anything, is missing on the RV.net blog?
I’m a 61 yr old female living in Lancaster, PA. I’ve been reading RV.net blog for awhile so I don’t remember how I found it. We had a motorhome from ‘77-’81 in CA using it almost every weekend from April until October, moved to IL (didn’t use it as much). We sold it in ‘86 when our son was busy with baseball, soccer, football and basketball. My husband and I are putting our house up for sale, when it sells (I’m an optimist, figuring house prices are down as well as motorhomes), we’ll buy a motorhome (with nothing in storage) and live it until my he retires near the end of the year. Then we’ll hit every body of water good for fishing, kayaking and beaches we can. I scan every blog looking for something of interest, but I don’t know what that is until I read the first line. I guess right now I’m looking for the temperature of things as far as basic RV parks staying in business, same with state parks closing (central IL), how RVers are faring with repairs with shops going out of business and the basic tips for organizing an RV for fulltiming with no additional storage. Thanks! Like I said I’ve been reading for awhile and learning alot.

Heard about the blog from the internet. I’ve found that there is a lot of information
about RV’ing that I didn’t know. I just bought a trailer and was surprised to find out how complicated some of the elect, plumbing systems etc can be. I bought an older airstream and “no” maint manual.
I am a 59 year old male living with my wife in NY State. We own a class A (Tiffin Allegro), our 2nd RV (1st was a class C). We love RVing and have taken two cross country trips and many other trips, of course. This year we are hoping to take my 86 year old parents to the Grand Canyon. I found RV Net by doing a search for RV websites. I visit this site because of the variety of interesting topics as I am always willing to learn something. I have always been building/renovating something (houses, cars) and now have a new toy to personalize.
I am located in Calgary Alberta Canada. I found you while surfing the web for RV information, am a male in my 60s and visit this blog because it confirms some ideas I have will work, has given me solutions to small and large problems in most editions and I think you are doing an excellent job. What, if anything, is missing on the RV.net blog? I would like to know where to buy rv furniture, particuarly a table and chairs set for a 5th wheel at a really good price. Is there a salvage site or some where to buy good used furniture for an rv?
Hello from Burleson, Texas!! I don’t have a clue how I found this site. I am 50 something (I stopped counting) and very married to the most wonderful guy for 30 something years (He was a cradle robber). We love to use our RV on weekends and for trips when possible. I like reading solutions to problems that have been encountered and I don’t have a clue if something is missing – I’ll leave that answer to a more experienced Rv’r.
Since you asked, 50s married, googled places with RV interests, yours was among those that offered some information peppered with the ads.
Most of these sites are largely advertising venues where the operators get paid for all the views they can create. Most recycle the same ads, and the same blather. You really need to ask why this will probably be my first and only post, I hate to get flamed. I catch myself wanting to respond to articles in the local newspaper blogs. Why when everyone is spewing emotional invectives at each other would I want to join in the fray. If it was dialog on an intellectual level without the partisanship, I might participate and learn something possibly. Nothing is gained by society’s dissent into an emotional tit for tat. That’s why we remain lurkers, harvesting tidbits of knowledge and wisdom without engaging in the lunacy.

Read your forums for any information about RVing. Lots of good info there. You are the first bookmark in my bookmarks.
My primary comment about this site concerns the @##$$%^# pop-up that completely hides the page I want to view every time I click a link in your e-mail newsletter.
Obviously I’m already a subscriber, or else I wouldn’t have a newsletter link to click; yet; EVERY TIME I try to read the rest of an article, the pop-up gets in the way, and not only that, but I have to scroll to the bottom of the thing to find the button to close it. To make things worse, that button is 2/3 obscured.
Hopefully, you can find a way for subscribers to avoid the pop-up.

My wife and I are new to RVing. Bought our first Class C last August. We have a lot to learn and I appreciate the helpful way most of you answer our questions.
I can’t think of anything missing on the site. I spend most of my time in the forums looking for other peoples problems and how they fixed them. Seems like this is good information to know when I’m on the road. I think the people who do not post comments are doing it to avoid being ridiculed. There are some nasty people out there who take every opportunity to make someone feel stupid. It’s not helpful, just give them a straight answer.
I hear and read alot about tire pressure. How high/hot can a tire get and still be safe? My class B calls for 50 psi front and 80 psi rear when cold. I have seen it climb to 59 psi and 96 psi. Waiting to hear.
Thank You, Joe

Seeking knowledge…I placed a frivolous bid, sure to lose, but I won…glad I did but never imagined I’d get a RV so cheap. So I own a RV and had no idea where anything, LP tanks, black & grey holding, furnace etc were located. Even opening the compartments was difficult, was sold a FH751 key, told it is universal and would open every compartment of every RV, probably will BUT NOT MINE. So I’m absorbing the knowledge of others that frequent here.
I’m a ham radio operator so kind of used to CW, RTTY, AM, FM, APRS, etc. know what they mean, heck I grew old and got used to them one at a time over the last 32 years and now I find so many acronyms DH, FF, FP, etc. being used and feel lost due to a lack of a definition page. I hope I will be able to understand them before another 32 years pass by … I should live so long,

What is missing is spellchecker! Many folks lurk because they are poor spellers or typists. Spellchecking would at least allow some folks a little more confidence in chiming in!

I’m always searching for different options in RVing. I would like to see more about innovations and updates about 5th wheels. I have been playing with RVs for about 20 years and found that the 5ver gives me the most bang for the buck. I have already added hydrolic landing, weather proof awnings, slide out covers, and a 5th airborne king pin. I also went to the B&W under-bed hitch with the 5th wheel buddy set up. Concidering the new PVC style of roof covering when it finally becomes available and I can find someone to do the install.

Visit RV to get some ideas on RV. We have an Airstream trailer and most of the comments are related to Motor Homes. But we may move up to one of these. In any event the comments are useful. I like the comments about the freezer. We have a small freezer in our built in refrigertor/freezer and we only use it to keep the Vodka for martinis, But I do cook almost every meal in the trailer. It is a welcome diversion to shop at local stores when we are on the road. Besides it takes too long to defrost the items in the freezer.
Somewhere up there in the comments I noted a question about Internet access. Last couple of years I had a Sprint Boroadband card but when it expired I did renew it and then realized I would ghaave to sign two year contract AGAIN! We travel in Canada and Mexico where most of the time th Sprint card does not work. Last week I bought a Virgin Mobile card that has no contract- $100 plus charge for minutes used. For email and general web browsing it is more than enough. The only downside is that you have to figure out how many MB you are going to use because there is a limit on the card. But then, assuming that you go home once in a while, you don’t have to keep paying for the contract. when you are not on the road (although of course you can use it is your primary internet connect system) Hopefully it is going to work in Canada this summer- they told me it would, but it has been quite good here in the US. Most of the time the campground WiFi’s are either really slow or not available except in the clubhouse area. So the Broadband card is a good solution. They are available in a good many locations. It takes some patience to integrate it into your computer system but, once you get them on the phone, the technicians are really quite helpful and very patient with floundering installers. Hope this is helpful.

To further convince ourselves that we wish to travel to the US and travel the RV trails, we currently have a 21′6 caravan which we don’t use often enough as we still have business commitments. I would like to thank everyone for making this site an interesting experience and whetting our appetites for further exploration of the RV’ers life style.

Sorry – keep up the good work…
I live with my wife in the woos in central MA
We are both in our late 50s
I am a member of Good Sam
Information – I purchased an RV a few years ago when everyone was freaking out about $4 a gallon for gas, I’ve long wanted a better way to travel cross country and an RV seemed like the best way. I hunted for about 3 months behind every Trailer/RV place within 50 Miles of my home. I found a 1995 Winnebago Itasca Sunrise 32RQ with a head liner hanging loose all over the RV but nothing else wrong and low mileage (50k). I purchased this rig plus a box of clear push pins and forced the headliner back up to the ceiling where it belongs.
Before my first trip I replaced all the brake pads, the front wheel bearings, examined all brake lines (very good – no rust). Changed to full synthetic motor oil, replaced all the spark plugs and wires (including new heat reflectors on all the wires), Install new fan belts on the front of the engine, power flushed the tranny, had the front end checked at a Chevy truck shop (Bell cranks were sloppy but serviceable for a few more trips), the rig passed MA inspection on the first try – and then I drove it to Florida and back to check it out. The steering was a little sloppy but manageable – I now have a pair of SuperSteer bell cranks that will be installed before my next trip.
This rig has also served us well as a second home – we live out in the woods and two winters ago we had a bad ice storm and most of the state lost power for over a week – we moved into this RV and lived there very nicely the entire time (seven days and nights), power supplied by the generator and a few trips to one gas station that had gas and was on its own power.
My wife and I are hopeful that this RV can at least be a transition home when we move south in a few years, and who knows maybe we will just travel for a time (we both suffer from ‘Happy Feet’).
Between trips I do everything I can to find out what other RVers are doing, what problems they have and how they solve them. There are a lot of smart folks out there doing this and I would be negligent if I did not learn from them.
Keep posing your blogs – I read then most weekends along with lots of other links to RV travel and live aboard.
After though – I am not new to this, as a teenager I built a boat and spent four week on the Mississippi River, I have built other Cats and Tris for sailing in mid west rivers and lakes, I lived on a 34′ motor cruiser on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay out side of Washington DC for seven years, I also motored my 32′ Morgan sailboat from DC to Warwick RI when we moved to MA 13 years ago. I guess I have a hard time following the pack…

I’m originally from Hawaii, currently living in FL, I’m retired, considering full-time RVing with my wife. I’m looking to learn about RVing, how to do it “full time”, and a lot of other “how to’s”. This happened to be in my email, and curiosity made me open it.

7. Love the site, hate the comment system. I once wrote a long detailed comment that I thought might be informative to some and the Capcha failed.
Everything I wrote disappeared! I had to start all over again! This time I copied my comment text – just in case – and the capcha failed again even tho I triple-checked to be sure I had it right! When it failed a third time, I sent the site a verbal comment that may not be printable and gave up.
Why do we need capcha security for a comment? If it is necessary, why not do as other sites do and simply give the commenter another chance to get one right without erasing his work? If he exits the site without getting it right, then erase his stuff.
Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Looking for anything I can do to my rig.
What’s missing? An in-depth article on switching over to LED’s. Not so much how they last longer and use less power. What type fits into what fixture, and not just for the new rigs but older ones. I want to switch most of mine out but when you look at the web sites for LED’s it gets overwhelming. Surely some manufacturer would be willing to supply direction as to what is the best bulb for the application.
