Great story Mark, reminds me of the time we were campng in Hickory Run SP in PA. Dad got a bit lazy and broke the cardinal rule. needless to say we had visitors that night also.

scary thing is, this has apparently become a problem in the area. A couple years ago, there were a couple of people hurt and killed in the same park. Respect the bears!

Mark - I read this article and laughed and laughed because I was anticipating each "event" before it happened. Being a Pa. native from the Poconos who has spent time in Bradford, Tioga, and Potter Counties (I'm thinking the trip had to be near there), I just loved the article. Funny thing is - I never noticed the name of the author until I finished the article. Great to know that even the people who give us so much good information started out as novices themselves! I am wondering, however, what the heck you did with the deer after it was dressed?? You didn't have it in the Shasta with you, did you????? And why didn't you just fry some deer steaks???

Thanks again for a fun article!

Great story Mark, really enjoyed it. We had a couple bears visit our campground in Alaska last year, Shook our fellow RV'ers motorhome next door to us, left a pile of scat in front of ours before they commenced to tear apart the enclosed trash receptacle area the campground had built. Sure wouldn't want to be a tent camper even with the electric fence used to close off that area of campers, that was provided. They are powerful creatures. rrrick08

My first "RV' experience was when My Dad & I put a wood fram on the bed of His new 1949 Chevy pickup and covered it with Canvas, heavy Canvas, with a flap even on the back, We put in 10 gallons of water storage, a coleman stove, a lantern and a bunk with storage underneath. We had an absolute ball in that thing.
And now, here I am in My new 37 1/2' Montana 5th wheel, totally spoiled rotten !! But having a ball in Texas. It can't get any better that this.

We started in a tent about 1968. From there we camped out of our truck that had a cap on the bed. Next came a truck camper and I thought I was in heaven. The truck camper turned into a 20 foot trailer with a bathroom and I knew I was in heaven then. Next came a 1972 Winnabago that needed a complete new roof and most everything else. It took a year to get it on the road. We were very proud of our work. It was 10 years of staying very close to Ohio and my husband laying under the engine and or motorhome in about every campground. But we loved every minute. I have kept a diary of every experience. We then puchased a newer class A and had about 10 more great years. This time we didn't have many problems. Now we have a new class A and I am newly retired. It's been fun and there is more fun to come. connie

Mark, I guess you're glad you weren't trying that hunting trip in a tent. And, I'm glad you got that eight-pointer to make up for the stressful episode. I have had a few adventures in parts of Pennsyvania and loved it's near primative rough terrain and remoteness.

Of all the less-than-fun events I've experienced over 30+ years, they were far outweighed by the joy of being outdoors in the forest. Being from Metropolitan D.C. living in Maryland, it was always such a change to be out in the boonies.

Like you, I've graduated in stages to better and better camping accomodations. I prefer my 32' one-slide fifth wheel because I can still maneuver through most Forest Service roads and many F.S. and State Park campgrounds.

Happy camping!

Mark,

What a hum 'dinger of a trip. Mine was a '67 Bug with the passenger seat removed and a closet door with two 4X4's nailed to the bottom front of it for a bed. I miss the pork and beans- they were a lot of fun.
