North & South of the Border – Same Question

January 31, 2009 by Brian Brawdy · 3 Comments

In the opening 11 months of “Green RVing” the media interest in my North American adventure has been pretty demanding. The requests for interviews keep coming. I am continually inspired, witnessing the deep interest in energy conservation and independence. People seem generally moved to self-reliance and autonomy. Read more  Read More →

Welcome to New Green Blogger

January 31, 2009 by Bob Difley · 11 Comments

RV.net has added a new blogger, he is known as the Green RVer, and with myself will be another source of green RVing tips and comments. He will also be relating stories and anecdotes from the many radio, newspaper, and TV interviews he has done in support of RVing being green. Check his first blog at: http://blog.rv.net/2009/01/28/mother-nature-is-watching-2/#more-3321. Oh, yes. His name is Brian Brawdy, a former New York police inspector who roams around the country in his Lance camper loaded with solar panels, a wind turbine, rain water collector, and several other green gizmos and gadgets, most of which he has installed himself. Consider him another source of green info. on RVing. Please check in and welcome him. Tell him I sent you, and that you will be watching to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble with the media, most of whom think RVing and Green are an oxymoron. Oh, and also that he doesn’t run over them too roughshod–as his Irish temper has been known to do from time to time. Also, watch my blog for information soon on the Going Green Contest for The Rally in Albuquerque in April. The final touches are being put onto the rules and regulations and small print (very little) for a contest eliciting entries from you intelligent, creative, environmentalist, conservation-minded, and green RVers. It is going to have $$$ prize money too! More next week (I was derailed this week do to family obligations and a computer crash), when I will return to my regular... Read more

Camera Shopping

January 31, 2009 by Jon Vermilye · 2 Comments

When it is time for a new camera there are a couple of points that may be helpful whether you are purchasing a inexpensive point & shoot camera or the latest expensive DSLR. Before you start shopping, it is useful to determine what camera makes the most sense for you. The major choices are between a Point & Shoot camera & a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR). A previous article “Point and Shoot or DSLR” may help make the choice. After deciding which type of camera to purchase, some other considerations: Where to purchase your camera.  There are three basic choices – an on-line purchase, a “big box store” or a local camera store.  My first choice for a number of reasons is my local camera store.  It is far more likely that a real camera store will have long time, knowledgeable employees that can help you with your choice. No big box store that I know of will let you take a camera outside to see how it reacts to daylight lighting conditions, let you use your own memory card to take a bunch of samples to review at home on your PC, etc. It is important to keep them alive & in business because they will often carry accessories that the big box stores don’t.  Although you may be able to find the accessories on-line, you won’t have the ability to actually try them on your camera, see if your stuff fits the camera bag, etc. Although the posted price may be higher than the big box store or on-line suppliers, many local camera... Read more

Introducing the National Parks Blog!

January 31, 2009 by Christina Bullock · 36 Comments

Hello and welcome to the new National Parks blog on RV.net! My plan for this blog is to discuss national parks, state/provincial parks, and any large municipal parks that may be of interest to RVers in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. In each post, I’ll choose one park and go over the park highlights (natural features, recreation opportunities, history, etc.), park hours and fees, as well as campsite information and general driving directions. I’ll post new state/provincial park reviews every Monday and national park reviews every Saturday. Since I haven’t been to every park in North America, I’d like to get comments from those of you who have been to the park, have heard about the park, or who have plans to go to the park. I welcome feedback as a way to inspire everyone with great trip ideas. Now then, I suppose I’ll tell you how I first came to appreciate national/regional/local parks [for the sake of brevity, I'll use the term "nature park(s)” interchangeably]. As far as I can remember, I first learned about these parks from watching Hanna Barbera’s Yogi Bear cartoon show. Jellystone Park seemed like a great place to have fun with Yogi, Boo Boo and Ranger Smith. Another early memory is of watching the Disney cartoon shorts of bumbling Humphrey the Bear and Ranger Woodlore in Brownstone Park. Like many families, mine went on vacations and weekend trips to these nature parks to marvel at the natural beauty of our nation. I would pretend I was... Read more

Email a map with Google Earth

January 31, 2009 by Chris Guld · 11 Comments

Google Earth must be the most fascinating application on the web today. Did you ever have a globe and use it to just dream about far away places? Did you wish you could just point at any place on that globe and dive in – finding out all you ever wanted to know? That’s Google Earth. A magic globe that can tell you anything you want to know about any place. But first, you have to get familiar with the program itself. The video below shows you how to use Google Earth to make your own map of where you are, then send it to a friend in an email so they can find you even in an obscure corner of a campground. You may already do this with other mapping programs, but I think you’ll like how it works with Google Earth. And, once you get started using Google Earth, you may never stop! Traveling with Children – Part 2 – Bernice’s Tips

January 29, 2009 by Bernice Beard · Leave a Comment

Traveling with your children or grandchildren can be incredibly rewarding for you and them, but it has its own challenges as well. Below are more tips to help you keep the little campers safe and happy. Pay attention to the campground rules and explain them to your children. Most of the time they are there for the children’s safety. Don’t be one of those parents (or grandparents) who turn their little ones loose to annoy other campers or get into dangerous situations. – Fran Lathe (FL), Westminster, MD Bring plenty of items that will keep your children active after a long day on the road—sports gear, snorkels, bikes. At a campground, two people throwing a football around can soon become a full-fledged touch football game. – FL Read more  Read More →

RV Cooking Show Goes Green, Eats Healthy

January 29, 2009 by Evanne Schmarder · 2 Comments

This year I’ve committed to a few “goals” that are most likely the same ones you’ve set for yourself. Chances are we both have pledged to become more aware of how we interact with the planet, to give back to our communities – whether we travel and the entire country is our hometown or we’ve lived in the same neighborhood all of our lives, and to live a healthier, more simple life. You, too, huh?!? To that end I wanted to begin the new year of RV Cooking Shows supporting these goals. And so this episode – RV Cooking Show Goes Green, Eats Healthy – will give you a few eco-friendly RV tips – maybe you live them, maybe you’ll learn something. After that I prepare a satisfying, good for you, and easy dish – Steamed Potstickers and Veggies with two sensational dipping sauces. Enjoying this delicious meal feeds my body and my soul!
