Call Me Crazy!

After our Door County adventure last week and after getting our trailer home, I called our dealer, House of Camping in Bridgeview Illinois about two problems I had and needed them fixed. While on the phone with my dealer, I asked him if he still had another model we had looked at. Perhaps I should rewind a bit on this so you all can be on the same page as me.

When we bought our Rockwood 8314SS travel trailer, we really struggled with the decision between that model and the 8315BSS. The 8314SS has the rear lounge with large windows and a front bedroom. The living room/dining area has a large slide giving ample room. The 8415BSS has two slides and has a large front kitchen area. The slides are for the living/dining area and the other slide is for the bedroom. We loved the 8315BSS bedroom and we loved the 8314SS rear lounge.

Ultimately, we chose the 8314SS for the rear living room and really do like it quite a bit, but are not very fond of the bedroom. My son uses the bedroom as his space and we use the couch that makes into a queen bed.

Back to my conversation with my dealer; I asked him if he still had the 8315BSS to which he replied that he did not. Instead, he advised me that Forest River is coming out with a new Rockwood 8314 which has the rear lounge, but it also has the slide for the bedroom! This is where I need you to tell me I’m crazy!

The dealer will have the new model in mid August and we are on the top of the list to view the new model. I am seriously considering trading my 2008 8314SS that I bought in February for the new model 2009 8314 just six months after I bought the first one.

Now, here’s where it really gets crazy. For the heck of it, I took a look at some Class A RVs as someday that is something I would really like to upgrade up to. I called Camping World of Chicago and asked them if they would consider taking both my 2008 8314SS and my 2001 Ford Excursion in trade for a Class A RV. They said they would be willing to do just that. This would solve the problem of my selling my tow vehicle and travel trailer should I go this route.

Okay people…..tell me I’m crazy…..or tell me what I want to hear (so I can show my wife).

Happy camping and see you next Sunday!

It’s only money and you can’t take it with you, but on the other hand one of you just might leave the farm before the other and could leave a huge debt for someone to pay off with limited income. But if that is not a problem either then I say go for it!

There is no “should you go this route” – make the turn and take it. You may still need a tow vehicle if you want to go see places once you are in a RV Park, but if you have been a 5th wheeler, step up to the cab of a class A and see the country side as you drive like you never saw it before.

OK, that is what you do if money is no object. However, keep in mind that whatever you paid for that 8314SS, as soon as the wheels hit the street you lost 35-40% of the value. If you took out a loan, I doubt that Camping World will pay you more than the amount of your loan. If you paid cash, then you can kiss 35-40% of that money good bye. The bottom line is to look long term – very long term. If you intend on RVing for the next 10+ years then the loss you take today will be made up over time with the enjoyment of having a class A. If this is just something to do for the next couple of years keep what you have.

    Good luck,

    Jerry

You wont be happy towing a regular trailer after a 5th wheel.
You will be extatic if you go into a class A motorhome, something like a Dutch Star, which can be picked up very reasonable now due to the fuel costs, also a small tow vehicle is cheaper to operate when rig parked.
    Enjoy the good life

NOW is the time to buy and buy BIG! The money you will save right now will more than pay for additional fuel costs and quite possibly save you enough to get that tow vehicle if you don’t already have a car you can tow. Class -A IS the Way to see it ALL today and the next and the next…………….GO FOR IT!

When my husband died he left me with a 6 mo old Ford dulley and a huge 5th wheel. I knew if I tried to drive them I would knock down every mailbox along the route. Long story short-put the 5th wheel out on consignment and traded the truck in on a 28 foot Class A at Lazy Days in Tampa, FL. Now all the mailboxes are safe as the dog and I hum down the road! Great fun to drive and fun to meet new people and places. Keep on keeping on!

Aren’t we all a little CRAZY. Go with a Class A, no hook ups. no comlicated backing up,

Go for it, the class A coach.. Get one big enough, make sure it is diesel, and make sure it has the”panaramic” windshield. Life is great when you have all of the above.
