Getting on the Road – Part 1 – Bernice’s Tips

April 30, 2008 by Bernice Beard · 3 Comments

In this series, I will be sharing with you selected tips from my book 301 Ways to Make RV Travel Safer, Easier, and More Fun. These are secrets, tricks and techniques I have learned in my 20 years of RVing as well as great tips I have compiled from other Rvers, often coming from costly mistakes. They are intended to make your experiences more carefree. You might think that a few of these tips sound pretty simple. But sometimes the best ideas are the simple ones—they make you say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” Let’s start with some tips for getting on the road. Keep an RV supply checklist at home. When you’re ready to go camping, just pull out the list. It makes it easy to gather supplies, and you won’t have to worry about forgetting anything. Courtesy of Cinda and Jim Showalter, Mt. Airy, MD When packing the RV, remember to put lighter items in the upper cabinets and heavy items in the bottom ones. Storing cans or bottles in boxes keeps them from shifting while on the road. Tank Sprayers – the Unglamorous Gadgets

April 30, 2008 by Roy Scribner · 3 Comments

Flat screen TV’s might be sexy, but when you are at the dumping station on Sunday morning with a string of like-minded RV’ers cooling their heels behind you, there is nothing quicker and more efficient than an integrated tank sprayer for getting that waste tank squeaky clean. There are a number of products on the market, but the major players are both from Camco®; the Quickie Flush™ and the Tornado Rotary Tank Rinser™. These products allow you to connect a water hose directly to the black (waste) tank, spraying the inside surfaces of the tank and greatly aiding in the evacuation of waste, without having to wait until the tank is empty, then refill the tank and re-dump (and probably repeat!). No more White Knuckle Driving – RSS Sway Bars

April 30, 2008 by Mark Polk · 13 Comments

If you’ve been around RV’s for awhile you have probably heard of the term “sway,” even if you don’t pull a trailer. It’s a common term in the RV industry and it means a side-to-side movement. Sway is normally associated with a travel trailer being pulled by a tow vehicle, but it can take on a whole new meaning for motorhome owners too. Read more  Read More →

RV Chassis Design – Look Maw, It’s A UFO!

April 29, 2008 by Brad Sears · 1 Comment

Chassis design is one of those things that draws a lot of opinions, some educated and others… well you get the idea. Chassis design under a motorhome, for the most part, depends what is available from a vehicle maker like Ford or Chevy, and it shares its engineering for a variety of purposes. The class C is a van that was produced by the factory as a cut off, meaning that the back of the van was left off at the factory. The super C is a cut off heavy-duty pick up truck or light duty box truck. Class A’s were basically school bus chassis. And there was very little done to make a motorhome different from a UPS truck. Outrageous Gas Prices, RVs, and Redwood Trees

April 29, 2008 by Sean Michael · 28 Comments

Recently, while towing our travel trailer back from the Sunshine State, I fueled up our tow truck SEEMORE. A thirsty beast, SEEMORE ingested $99 of diesel into his belly before I finally released the pump trigger. He could’ve swallowed even MORE of the costly stuff, but I wanted to keep the final tab beneath that symbolic Ben Franklin note. Read more  Read More →

Push Ups

April 29, 2008 by Lynn Difley · Leave a Comment

Drop and give me fifty. If this phrase doesn’t make you cringe and trigger an urge to flee you were never in the military or in junior high or high school physical fitness classes. Here is a factoid for those of you who love such things, Paddy Doyle of the UK currently holds the Guinness World Record for the most push-ups done in one year. In 1988-1989 he dropped and pushed up 1,500,230 times! While most of us will be lucky if we can perform 10 full body push ups, these old fashioned moves still remain one of the best ways to strengthen the upper body and increase muscle tone and endurance capability in the chest and shoulders. They are a great upper body exercise, no need to join a gym or buy expensive equipment; you can do these at home or in your rig, any time you want to increase your upper body strength. 5th Wheel Towing – Unsafe Mounting Practices

April 28, 2008 by ib516 · 4 Comments

I came across this video by Pull-Rite about the hazards of mounting a hitch behind the truck axle, and thought it to be valuable information. Here’s the scoop: This video takes a look at the more radical ideas that some people think might be a solution for towing 5th wheel trailers with a short bed truck. Mounting a hitch behind the truck axle, or changing the towing pivot point to behind the axle, creates unstable, unsafe, and dangerous towing characteristics. No knowledgeable RVer, RV Dealer, or Hitch Installer would suggest or consider these options. Moving the towing pivot point behind the truck axle induces dangerous trailer sway, and eliminates the advantages inherent to 5th wheel towing – with the trailer now having a negative effect on the safety, stability, and handling due to cross winds, passing trucks, and unexpected maneuvers. Safe handling speeds will be significantly reduced.  Read More →
