I have to agree that shutting off the flash for distance shots would make more sense. Part of the problem is the lenses are so small in Point & shoot cameras that the focusing system may end up at infinity at 12' - 15'. The camera can't tell that the subject is 500' away...

As to the position of the flash - cameras are getting so small that it may not make much difference where the flash is as compared to the lens - it can't get far enough away to solve the problem. A few manufacturers used fold out extensions in the past to get the flash further off axis, but if consumers want smaller cameras, red eye solutions are going to be electronic rather than physical.

Red eye and small digital cameras. Do you happen to know why ALL of the manufacturers place the flash so close to the lens? There seems to be plenty of room on the fact to move it elsewhere - but EVERY manfacturer places it right next to the lens. As you pointed out, moving the flash away from the lens eliminates or reduces red-eye. I love my small Casio digital camera, but in low light the red-eye is a real hassle. If they just moved the flash to the corner of the camera, it would probably change the angle enough to fix this.

2oldman,
I noticed theh same thing too. For some reason, point-and-shoots only base the flash firing on light metering, and not distance. I would think camera manufacturers would help consumers by turning off the flash if the subject is, say, more than 15 feet away. It should already have the distance info from the autofocus system, so why not put it to use?

Flash does not work in stadiums or concerts, yet you see this all the time. It's amazing.
